Bali Hai Restaurant San Diego Reviews from The Last Year
Very Disappointed
Food: 2/5 | Service: 3/5 | Atmosphere: 5/5 Very disappointed with our most recent meal. This is a $$$ rated restaurant and so we expected much better at almost $100 for 2 people. First the good - our reservation was ready, and we were seated at a nice table by a window on a Thursday night. Our waiter was attentive, so no issues on that front. Now, the not so good. The meal for the price was very substandard. I had the pork chops and what I got were 2 VERY DRY pork chops. Because of this - the flavor was minimal. The rice was ok. My wife had the salmon and while the portion size was good, the flavor was uninspiring. She's had MUCH better salmon at restaurants that cost 1/3 to 1/2 as much. The risotto that was included was very good. That was really the star of our entire meal (a side dish). The service was not as good at this point as on TWO separate occasions, the staff brought out food we definitely hadn't ordered and we had to inform them it was the wrong table. This happened before our actual meals arrived. At least they got our orders correct. One more HUGE negative, is the imposition of a mandatory 5% (misc) SURCHARGE on all meals. That's just 5% that I take off my tip calculation so it only hurts their employees and alienates their customers. Stupid decision by management in my opinion. Bottom line - would we return. Probably Not. Parking: Plenty of free parking in large parking lot BUT... Parking lot is in very POOR condition with large potholes. Be very careful driving thru to not damage a wheel or tire.
First time visiting
Great meal. Very nice atmosphere with view of San Diego sky line. My sons got the pork chop, the Korean fried chicken and the short ribs. They all loved it. I got the pepper steak and it was very good. My wife got the honey shrimp. Another great dish. Would definitely return next time in San Diego
Best view ever !
Was greeted by two cheerful host, Olivia & Sarah. Being Solo I sat up at bar. Musician 3-6pm was playing for happy hour. Started with coconut shrimp. It only takes one mai tai to get lit. Another Olivia tended Bar sold me on the Ribs they were a meal on their own. You can tell workers enjoy there task by how professionally they move about and how attentive & anticipating patrons needs while smiling.
Back again after almost 10 years! The food & ambiance
Back again after almost 10 years! The food & ambiance haven't changed. Recommended Bali Hai to my friend who was celebrating a birthday, our server Victor (?) I hope, took great care of us in addition to the excellent service at the bar AND food runners! DRINKS: I had the Pele's Relief and our boyfriends tried the strong Mai tais lol. If you're looking to get buzzed, Mai tais are the way to go. If you want to enjoy a coconuty delicious drink with a hint of nutmeg, I'd go for the Pele's. FOOD: They do need to switch up their pupus menu. We shared the poke (do not recommend) the fish was not fresh and the chips didn't pair well. Expensive for the portion. Edamame was not my favorite either, we got it Hurricane style and it was so bland! We literally had to ask for some salt & ponzu to add on top. For our entrees we shared the rib eye. It was cooked perfectly and we had a side of mash to go with it. Mash was very good. My friend ordered the salmon and the risotto was to die for!! The salmon was topped with a strawberry relish that went well with it. A great date night spot, celebration, or happy hour. They do happy hour Monday - Thursdays only. Anddddd the view is pretty great. Definitely request to sit by a window.
To start my restaurant week discovery.
I started to pick this restaurant ~~~ It's a Beautiful restaurant with a great view. The whole restaurant is filled with artifacts of the Pacific islands totems and colorful arts. Giving the visitors a small taste of the island people. The servers came by regularly to see if my needs were met. The appetizers and the drinks were phenomenal. I just loved its views of the harbor~~~!! It's such a wonderful way to enjoy my lunch!
Always have an amazing time when I go there.
Request a window table and watch the sunset reflect off the bay and downtown San Diego. Food is great, service is great. Ambiance is fantastic. It's lively and loud. Check out the cool memorabilia on display. Go at HAPPY hour and sit in the bar and listen to some live music. Get the signature Mai Tai. You only need one. Afterwards, take a stroll through the marina area down the street or along the shelter island point. Or check out a band at Humphreys backstage. It's a fun night.
We stopped by here for brunch while a friend was visiting
We stopped by here for brunch while a friend was visiting from the east coast. I had been here a couple times for dinner socials and a colleague's promotion ceremony, but never for brunch. The drinks were pretty strong. I ordered the Mr. Bali Hai (I had to get some simple syrup to make it a little less strong for ME). Some friends ordered Piña Coladas, daiquiris without alcohol, Navy Grog, and I think that's it. I liked the variety of the buffet. I didn't get the opportunity to try everything because I'm not eating meat right now, but I enjoyed everything except the Nutella French toast. I'm not sure if I didn't like it because didn't have enough Nutella on it for me or if I just expected something different. I REALLY enjoyed the coconut pancakes. Great views. Great service. I definitely recommend.
The service is okay and friendly, the location and view is
The service is okay and friendly, the location and view is great. However, the mixed drinks are completely wrong. We had a Long Island and aloha kiss, the Long Island just tasted like tequila and gin. The aloha kiss gave hits on dirty dish water. The appetizers were actually pretty good, just not very warm. Sampler platter. When the main course came out it was decent but not hot or seasoned right. The desert was a strawberry short cake... get got breakfast biscuits with whip cream and strawberries... very disappointing
Kitsch is how we described it.
The location, location, location, the building, the view, the vibe, the service are too good. It was fun to visit, we checked the box. I think you can read into that. Don’t get their famous Mai Tai, it’s just pure booze and unpleasant to drink. We each got juice to cut it. The food was forgettable, my 3 little coconut shrimp smelled strong and came with a thin dipping sauce the chicken teri was ok, the chocolate desert was not finished, I can’t tell you what it was, the strawberry compote on it was ick. Not worth the exorbitant prices.
When it comes to the view and the service, I would give
When it comes to the view and the service, I would give Bali Hai 10 stars. The restaurant sits on the second floor offering a panoramic view of the San Diego seaside and Downtown harbor. The entire restaurant is enclosed with massive windows so you don't have to suffer the cold ocean breeze without sacrificing the view. They have a massive selection of cocktails and I think this restaurant makes a really cute date spot. Food wise, they serve Hawaii inspired cuisine and I tried their Restaurant Week lunch special. The food was mid and the entree portions were pretty small (borderline appetizer size except for the Kalua Pork bowl, that one was decent sized). I forgot to take pictures of their appetizer but I tried their coconut shrimp and beef skewer. The coconut shrimp was a hit, it was large and crispy, paired with the sweet and sour sauce, it was delicious. Overall, don't expect too much for the food, you are paying a premium for the drop dead gorgeous views and ambiance. There's free parking around and they even have a handicap lift for wheelchair access.
Went today for restaurant week.
The view was magnificent. Our server was polite and friendly. Food was good, wish there was a little more of it.
**MUST READ IF YOU PLANNING A WEDDING HERE** My wedding
**MUST READ IF YOU PLANNING A WEDDING HERE** My wedding was last month and the venue itself is beautiful, having the backdrop of downtown San Diego is gorgeous! I gave 2 stars for location! But let's get down to business. The event coordinators were Ashley & Brittany. We were in main contact with Ashley, we saw her for our initial walk through, rehearsal night & day off. Here are the things that went wrong; 1)Set up time was suppose to be 1:30pm as I discussed. Our vendors and friends were there to set up and there were no tables out for them to set up (welcome tables & cake table) Easel were not out there as well. As you know this was the domino effect of everything falling behind. 2)The isle runner was tape down with packing tape and it look really bad. I was not aware that it was going to be done like that if so I would have opt out of that. Our pictures with the runner look really ghetto and having our photographer edit that is costing us extra money. Also it was being taped down while are guest were already seated. 3)The server Leah, should not be doing banquets. She was rude and unprofessional. When I ask her when the champagne service was coming out because obviously we are on a time schedule she said to me "I told your wedding coordinator in the orange we were behind, I'm sorry she didn't rely that message to you" which is every condescending. As a bride being talk to like that on my wedding day put me in not a positive mood, she needs to learn better customer service. There were other incidents that other guest also shared with me of her unprofessional attitude. I would make sure she doesn't serve your event! 4)In regarding to "my coordinator" I didn't have one. I told Ashley I didn't have one. Leah was referring to my friend who was doing most of the set up. We've discussed before hand that I did not have one. Her assuming or asking if she was my coordinator should have been confirmed and discuss with me, especially regarding timeline and decisions. 5)Our 4th hour bar tab had a $650 credit which we discuss. The bar didn't not let us know that we reached our tab & continue to serve which result in $600+ that was added on. Obviously we paid the bill but was not happy with that considering open bar for an hour is $800 and we paid $1250+ 6)I ask Ashley if the bar can not serve shots until dinner was served, she said that doubt be a problem but that was not relayed to the bartender. Obviously we are all adults and drink responsibility but the 2 Mai tai drink minimum also did not apply at my wedding. I would suggest at rehearsal you should walk through everything with the coordinator at Bali Hai to reiterate everything according to plan, because the day of the wedding the ball was dropped in different parts of the event. The coordinator (Ashley) is only there for the ceremony and not for the reception. My advice would you hire your own coordinator for the wedding. Obviously, this was my first rodeo and I wish someone should've suggested that for me. At the end of the day the wedding was beautiful at a beautiful venue. I wanted to address my concerns and give feedback regarding the event so in the future these concerns will not come up again. Communication with Ashley was great leading up to the wedding but the day of was disappointing. I did reach out to Ashley & Brittany to give my feedback and they said they would reach out to the staff and owners to resolve the issues. The response was all a he said she said no resolution. So if you decide to have your wedding here and spend $00,000.00 be aware. I expected more especially because they do weddings and events here all the time. Book here if you love the venue, have your own coordinator and Leah is not serving your guests.
This is a super fun place to visit while in San Diego! My
This is a super fun place to visit while in San Diego! My husband has raved about it for a long time and I relented and tried it on my way to the airport. The staff is so friendly, the drinks are beautiful (and strong), the food is fresh, and the view is spectacular I highly recommend and I will definitely return.
Loved the Polynesian food and the view.
The main tais are indeed quite strong (all alcohol and no juice). It's a little expensive so get here for happy hour to enjoy it for a lot less. Happy hour ends at five.
Uncreative food
. We loved the look of this interesting restaurant on Shelter Island. The view is beautiful and the decor makes you feel like you are in South Pacific. The food was disappointing. We shared the pupu platter for two. The coconut shrimp was very good and the poki was also good. The ribs were way over spiced and very salty. We also had the noodle salad. It looked good but had a hefty dose of rice vinegar which made the salad too acidic. The Mai Tais are strong but I have had much better in Hawaii that were more flavorful. Service was ok but not great. Too touristy even for a tourist!
Iconic San Diego Staple
We came here after a harbor cruise for some drinks/appetizers and it did no disappoint as a staple in San Diego for decades. I had been here once before for dinner with my parents who have since passed as this place was very special to them and where they first professed their love for each other shortly after it opened in the 50's over a cocktail that was in a big bowl with two straws. We sat in the bar area which was bustling, and ordered tons of appetizers - poke tuna, spinach lumpia, beef skewers, fries, coconut shrimp and all were fresh and delicious. The drinks were fantastic and quite strong (who does not love that!) Our server was amazing, despite having too many tables to focus on and took great care of us!
Turned out good
Things started a little rough. We made a reservation about 2 months ago for dinner & to have a table by the window to look out over the water. We were a little early & were told that a window table wasn’t available right then. If we wanted to wait for our reservation time we could, but we still probably wouldn’t get a window table (that we had made the reservation for). So we weren’t going to get it. A little frustrating. We got seated & got our drinks. We had a very good waiter. The drinks were good. Ordered our food & it was delicious. So, from a rough start, it improved to a very good dinner.
BEWARE!!! 5% added to all food and beverages.
We stopped here for drinks having heard about the wonderful location of this restaurant. Yes, the location is superb. The staff is superb. The food is mediocre. The prices and billing were horrific. Instead of re-printing new menus with increased pricing (prices which they do not list on their online menus whatsoever) they opted to add a 5% service charge to the entire tab. This applies to all food and beverages! We will not be returning.
Location Food Wow!
We enjoyed their mai tai drink special first before dinner with their calamari which were both excellent. We both had the wok fried sea bass which was absolutely amazing. One of the best fish dishes I have ever had. The view of the water and boars and excellent service added to our really great dinner. Highly recommend if you like Polynesian style food surf and turf dining.
Great dinner, awesome cocktails and Wonderful Service
If you are looking for a great dinner, awesome cocktails and wonderful service, then I highly recommend the Bali Hai. The view is another plus! You can see the San Diego skyline that is across the harbor. We truly enjoyed our dinner and will return.
Excellent location!
Beautiful location on the water. We enjoyed a delicious dinner and drinks. The MaiTai is strong! Service was good. We would have liked to see more polynesian influence in the entrees. Also, definitely make a reservation. Note that there is a 5% surcharge added to bill "due to increase in costs". Apparently, that will be split among back of house employees (we can only hope).

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
