Bouchon Racine London Reviews
Great pub, especially the immense bar food
Seven of us managed to grab the large round table at the back and enjoyed beer, cocktails, wine plus the best pub bar food in London. The bar can get busy but its well resourced and ordering isn't a chore. Always a pleasure to spend a few hours at The Three Compasses
Skip the downstairs bar
Went to the pub downstairs for a pre-dinner drink first. Sat at a sticky ledge counter beside which was a bowl of ice. Took a cube to wet surface of ledge to ease stickiness. World War Three broke out and we were told by the young bar boy to DO NOT DO THAT AGAIN as he whisked the bowl away with a flourish. Of course, we suddenly understood, it's (quite rightly) a hygiene issue as the ice was being used for drinks (we assumed it was for bottles of beer or wine). Before we could say anything, another barman came over, wagged his finger and repeated sternly DO NOT DO THAT AGAIN as if we were four-year-olds. We had asked for the ledge to be wiped but it wasn't happening as the young lad (Sidney he said his name was), who is obviously not enjoying his Summer employment, didn't fancy cleaning it for us. He was incandescent when we asked a second time. A group meeting was held between the staff behind the bar with glances in our direction. We DID NOT order a second drink ( I can only imagine the spittle-infused pints). Dinner upstairs was very pleasant but a bad taste had been left from the experience downstairs. It would be unfair to judge it with such an unfortunate start to the evening. Domage.
How can you pass up a 300-year-old pub?
The Three Compasses pub at 66 Cowcross Street in London is said to be 300 years old and nobody disputes the math. It sticks to its roots as a proper East End boozer. No pretension, just amazing local craft beer, the best burgers, friendly staff, sports on the telly, a lovely beer garden and the best pub quiz in East London. It's a place where strangers talk to each other about sports, family and politics. And when you mention that you're from the United States, well...that's a whole different subject. Open from noon to 11 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and noon to midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the Three Compasses brings fresh ingredients in from all over the city and prepares freshly made British favorites such as fish and chips, bangers and mash, beer battered haddock fillet and beef tartare and mackeral. They bring in fish from Newlyn in Cornwall, meat from Smithfield's in London, ice cream from Lewis of London and brioche buns that are cooked daily by Flourish Craft Bakery. It all comes together around the bar as the clock approaches midnight. We had calamari and prawns, bread and olives, smoked salmon, fish and chips, a Hickory burger and sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch and vanilla ice cream. And the beat goes on.
Excellent food choice
Fabulous food, had the oysters, escargot, veal and Rabbit. Oh and a creme brulee to finish. Service was excellent, staff really friendly. Would recommend.
Light lunch
Visited here after wedding ring shopping, we didnβt book (Saturday) but luckily it wasnβt that busy. The pub itself is modern and clean, it had a great variety for lunch. Me and my partner just had a few nibbles which was ideal. Great place!
Cash Refusal, strange?
This is a lovely pub with nice decor & super staff. 6 of us met up for a meal , unfortunately we had to leave after 1 drink as they refused to accept cash, this is totally unacceptable to all of us , so we canβt report on the food but it looks fine as locals we will not be going back.
Great food and service!
Great lunchtime meal served by lovely staff particularly Sarah and Emilio. The roasts were very nice and the company was excellent. Best place to come on a Sunday
Terrific London Pub
First visit here for a long time, with a former colleague. First thumbs up, Harveyβs. Kept remarkably well for a London pub. Food was also great - two small plates rather than one large one, beef tartare and mackerel. First rate.
NEW Bouchon Racine french restaurant upstairs is excellent.
Forget the Thai restaurant on the first floor and tune in to the excellent French restaurant above. Lovely air dried ham, super Brill and Halibut, very tasty desserts and good wines by the glass. Excellent service. Reasonable value. Try not to sit near the entrance as a cold wind can blow up the stairs from the street entrance. A great addition to the Farringdon scene.
Very helpful bar staff and amazing food
Just when you thought this was an ordinary boozer to watch the football what a surprise.!!! A very helpful young chap behind the bar made you feel v welcome in a manically busy pub, no frowns here, and with an excellent choice of ales, ciders and lagers that was good enough until the food turned up. Wow the mackerel on toast was amazing as was the ham. Really great pub!
