House of Prime Rib San Francisco Reviews
Great service, friendly staff, delicious food, wonderful
Great service, friendly staff, delicious food, wonderful ambience, and most importantly good vibes with the people you like. I would recommend this tasty place for anyone visiting San Francisco.
This was underwhelming.
..waited an hour and the prime rib was soft but flavorless. I thought all the sides were equally underwhelming.
For us, no trip to SF is complete without a visit to HOPR.
But, HOPR is now no better than a tourist trap that belongs at Fisherman's Wharf. Last experience was tough...Never felt so unwanted and rushed. Hosts and servers with pained and forced smiles. Food tossed on the table and plates taken away before you have time to finish. Dessert menu shoved in the face a half hour after seating. Food is good but, service, meh. Move 'em in and move 'em out. Just not the dining experience we expect. We were sadly disappointed. They won't miss us.
The food and ambiance were great but service was lukewarm
The food and ambiance were great but service was lukewarm at best. I hope it was simply a server issue and not representative of HOPR as a restaurant. Unfortunately we brought out of town guests and we raved about HOPR, only to have a less than excellent overall experience. They too enjoyed the food, ambiance and experience but felt the level of service and "special feeling" for guests did not match. We went on Saturday, 9/13 and sat at a round table in the dining room to the left of the waiting room.
The place has not changed.
The food is phenomenal. The wine connoisseur Chris was incredible. I highly recommend you asking for him for all of your wine needs.

Came here with a party of 10 for a quadruple birthday celebration !!!! Honestly the food was so amazing! The prime ribs literally almost melt in my mouth. It was so good. Nice and cozy inside definitely a really great ambience. Service wasn't really all there.. we felt like our server attitude was very much "I just need to serve you and get you out" type of thing.. sigh, but the food was amazing though!
No parking lot.
Super crowded. Not enough seats or space for people waiting to be seated. Not enough space between tables. Employees are not that friendly, almost seem annoyed. One employee took our food away instead of boxing it for us to take home. Place/food seems overrated.

I love house of prime rib! I have been coming here for a long time and the prime rib is unbeatable. The ambiance is iconic. The salad and fermented salad dressing is to die for! The Martinis are the best as well. The staff is always so friendly. Highly recommend!
Had a really lovely time here.
It was kinda loud where we sat but we still enjoyed our dinner experience
Came here for my birthday dinner.
I made reservations a year ago because I knew I wanted to eat here for my birthday. Food is always good. I ordered the House of Prime Rib cut medium. I know that it's best medium rare, but I like my prime rib a bit more cooked. The creamed spinach and baked potato was a great accompaniment to the prime rib. The ambience is lively and our server was friendly. I like coming here for special occasions. No complaints!
I have been dining regularly at the restaurant, and visited
I have been dining regularly at the restaurant, and visited again last night, but unfortunately the experience this time was mediocre. First the salad kept its standard, but my wife got a quite smaller portion than the rest of us while the waitress took away the large portion leftover salad. Was hoping they'd refill our salad dish with seconds. Next came the steak. I was sharing a King Henry VIII cut with my wife and was trying to explain to the waitress how we wanted it split. She tried to understand my direction but was unprofessionally pointing her finger at me. My cut was good but my son's cut, which was also the biggest cut, was instead quite dry. And when he asked for second, he was given another dry, end tip. After complaining to the waitress, we were given a better piece of second, but it was amazing how my once favorite restaurant started serving dry and even end tip steaks to his customers. It seems like inflation has taken a toll on HoPR, and they are starting to cut corners instead of maintaining their top notch experience. I may give them another chance, but for that price there are better options.

House of prime rib review: HOPR is one of those places you go just to go. Don't wait to celebrate someone or something to go cause you're holding yourself back. If you're from Sf/Bay Area, go, if you're visiting SF, go, if you want a good prime rib, go. Don't hold back and make that reservation ahead of time! But let's begin with this review: First and foremost, getting greeted upon entrance was an easy experience and the host asked us what time our reservation was (we had a late one at 10 pm and got there 10 min early) and she told us our table will be ready in 10 min. The moment 10 pm came, the table was ready and got seated at that exact time. Punctuality was perfect and we didn't mind waiting a little longer considering how busy it was. Now onto the actual review. Starting with the ambiance, you walk in and see happy faces. Secondly, you see wine cellars on the entrance side and in the middle of the restaurant that's serves well for a quick flick. Lastly, walking past the cart for which the chefs serve the steak was also a good sight to spectate in other people's tables (it builds suspense for when you order). We can now move over to dining experience. The server first asked what we wanted to drink and didn't want to have any type of martini's but wanted to go directly to wine for which we ordered caymus. Always a reliable cab you can order. We then had the bread and butter served to us which I can figuratively say is a staple appetizer. I would love to say that their bread and butter is their bread and butter, but it's NOT, it's one of their delicious appetizers that they serve followed by their salad. Lastly comes the entrees, for which i order the King Henry Cut alongside cream spinach and the mashed potatoes. I would rate each item a 10/10 (I am very bias) because the steak was perfectly medium rare with the combination of the dijon mustard made it taste even better, the cream spinach just sits well in the mouth, and the mashed potatoes with the gravy gave me a food coma . I never want people to eat this late at night, but if there's an occasion to, make sure it's at the HOPR.
Who doesn't know this restaurant.
A San Francisco landmark that is a must for locals and travelers. House made salad and dressing, bread and the world famous Prime Rib are the cornerstones of this establishment. Must go!
HOPR is a classic and never disappoints! Love the English
HOPR is a classic and never disappoints! Love the English cut. I usually ask for sautรฉed spinach instead of creamed spinach. You'll need a reservation, usually 9-12 months in advance if you want a dinner reservation. Sometimes you can get a later reservation closer to the date, but it'll usually be around 9pm. Don't worry, it's worth the wait!
Wait staff is great.
Bar is fabulous and classic. The menu is straight forward, setting the standard for prime rib as usual. A birthday gathering favorite.
House of Prime Rib is always amazing.
Last night we went to celebrate my husbands birthday party of 11 and I want to thank JB for going above and beyond to ensure that our dining experience was perfect. His great attention to detail and genuine hospitality and impeccable service made all the difference. JB was an absolute gem. When we go back and we will, we are requesting JB !!
Celebrated my birthday at HoPR and I'm so glad I did.
It was our first time and the experience and food did not disappoint. Our server was Nick, he was amazing. He explained everything to us very well and was attentive. The place itself was a little cramp and a bit loud but the experience was still a 10/10.
Classic sf restaurant perfect for friends
Classic sf restaurant perfect for friends visiting/occasions! It's difficult to make a reservation but you just have to waitlist and wait for spots to pop up (they usually do). It's has a classic steakhouse atmosphere inside, with attentive and classy service. I always get the largest size prime rib since it's the most worth it, and the sides are so good as well (we love baked potato and creamed spinach). Even the salad is delicious! The prime rib is super tender lightly seasoned, so you really get the true meat flavors coming through - the au jus is rich and flavorful too! Parking here isn't too bad but you definitely need to allocate some time to find a spot (and definitely don't leave valuables in the car here!). Love this classic restaurant in the city, and I always look forward to coming back.
House of Prime Rib should only be for special occasions.
Like my birthday. You didn't text me on my birthday. That's messed up. I'm mad at you. It's okay HOPR got me so good I don't even care. This was an epic experience. The ability to get this reservation, epic. The ambience and the class of the whole place... epic. The service... epic... the food yeah you know the word. It was an epic experience shared with epic people. Now let's get to the nitty gritty. There is no restaurant in SF that has this amount of class on a walk through. You walk into another world when you step into HOPR. Different time. Different place. It's like is this the STANDARD of class? It just might be. Service is next level. You are getting pure professionals. I feel like You don't just work at HOPR, you have to become HOPR. This the restaurant and its employees are synonymous. That might be the greatest compliment I've ever given the service. Normally all I care about is the food. So I mean let's skip to that. They start you with the bread, but don't touch it!!! It's a trick. Save it until after the goody goods. You get the drinks too off the bat. I'm not a drinker but it was a right of passage to get a martini here. Not the worst thing I've ever drank. If you like martinis I'm sure this is just tops though. House Salad subtly tasty and a great warmup. They put you in the midst of a salad show. Yeah that's real. I was enamored with it. A salad of all things?! Then you get the prime rib and this loaded plate. I can't call myself a prime rib expert but dang this meat did the thing. Pretty hard to top it. Except they literally top it with its own juices. Respect. They got a prime rib meat cart. Yeah things I don't know exist but now I'm obsessed with. The spinach and the mashed potatoes almost seem useless but alas they are not. Mashed potatoes with gravy but I snuck some chives and bacon bits from baked potato people. A little hack for you. The creamed spinach... legit. Don't miss that. Had the cream corn too but go with that greenery here. I cleared my whole plate (yes astonishing. I had a big boy bday appetite). I got my dessert cut. Hot take coming.... The desert cut was actually better. Wow. I know. Dessert... a single word but a completely loaded term. You better believe we got dessert. We got 5 different ones. Took a bite of each and pass to the right. A tradition that I hope becomes more mainstream. We are talking Key like pie? Pecan pie, crรจme Brรปlรฉe, warm apple crisp and fantasy cake (like one of every cake in one?). All of these desserts were making a statement. Believe it or not the pecan pie was the best. It was consensus. Next time I go in order 4 slices of that. Overall, this was an experience worthy of my birthday (still mad you didn't text me). HOPR thank you for what you do. Don't change a thing. (4.8 Stars)
I've been here on dates and work dinners.
It's a solid place if you want a prime rib dinner without all the work. It is loud AF in there tho, and our server wasn't the best. He wasn't bad, just not interested in service. 5 stars means amazing and something I couldn't get at home. My wife cooks a better prime rib dinner so it gets a 4.

We had a reservation on a Thursday at 7pm, and we were greeted with the nicest waitress ever. She was super attentive and friendly to every table she helped. Aside from the meat you order, you get a loaf of bread, salad, either a baked potato or mashed potato, either cream of spinach or cream of corn, and Yorkshire pudding. English cut - 5/5, thin slices with a little bit of fat, super juicy. The prime rib sauce was also quite good, better than some places I've tried. I'm not a huge fan of prime rib, but this was good. Tiramisu - 5/5, we got two of these because one wouldn't have been enough. Good rum flavor! Bread - 5/5, crunchy outside with soft inside, paired with butter. Yum! Who doesn't like complementary bread? Salad - 5/5, it had different types of veggies so the salad had a great crunch and good texture. The dressing tasted really good, probably one of the best and refreshing salads I've had. Baked potato - 5/5, LOADED with bacon bits, sour cream and chives. It can be a meal on its own. The mashed potato also seemed really good, super buttery. Cream of spinach - 4/5, a bit salty. I would definitely go for the cream of corn, which has a nice sweetness. Yorkshire pudding - 4/5, sort of like bread, given with your meat. Good when eaten with the meat and cream together.
Probably the best my taste buds had felt in a while!
Probably the best my taste buds had felt in a while! Everyone had a great time - great service, good food and good vibes all around!
Knowing this restaurant is a classic SF staple and highly
Knowing this restaurant is a classic SF staple and highly rated, I had high expectations and was excited to try this place. I was able to grab a reservation of 3 the week before and as soon as I arrived, it was busy and bustling in every direction. The space is tightly packed, but large, with multiple rooms. The pricing was very fair. The service was spot on. Our waiter was quick to explain the dinner, take our orders, fill our waters, and check up on us, thus the three stars. Our meal started off with sourdough as well as a salad that was made to order tableside. The portions were huge! There was a ton of dressing in the salad, which I couldn't stomach anymore after a few bites. We ordered the house of prime rib cut and english cut as well as sides of mashed potato and creamed corn. Now, I will give credit that there is a lot of food on the plate. The mashed potato is overflowing with gravy, the creamed corn added a touch of creaminess and sweetness to the meal, and the Yorkshire bread pudding soaked up all the juice and gravy. The house of prime rib cut came with the bone and both cuts were very soft, tender, and cooked to perfection. The problem was there was just no flavor. The meat itself was not seasoned at all and we had to rely on the accompanying au jus for any kind of flavor. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I've had better prime rib that didn't need to rely on mediocre au jus. It was a nice experience, but the food itself was nothing to go out of my way for.
A City classic! No restaurant in SF meets your high
A City classic! No restaurant in SF meets your high expectations each time. Last time I was there, they gave seconds if you're not completely satisfied.
Been a regular for over 30 years.
Once you get past the hosts, everything else is the best you could ask for. The best cuts, best signature salad, the best cream of spinach. Anything which makes it to your table is made with love and served with lots of care. The servers & carvers treat you as if you own the place. Will go back as long as my doctor allows me.
I typically am so happy with this restaurant even though
I typically am so happy with this restaurant even though since Covid it's been hit or miss. I have been bringing clients and family here for many years. I think Sat night (st pattys day eve) was the final straw. the server was the worst. After serving the salad he ran away and made a stink when we asked him if we could get some fresh black pepper. Then later, it's normally a novelty to get the second cut. my brother (it was his birthday dinner) had to ask for the second cut and then again the server snapped back to him saying "you want a second cut?!" As if he was asking this guy for a personal favor which he certainly didn't want to do. The general feeling was that he wanted us out of there as fast as possible. We can deal with the process going up a little, prices are up everywhere. We can maybe even deal with the prime rib cuts getting noticeably thinner and thinner. (They have been more and more cutting down on an angle from the bone) We can't deal with the waiter's exceptionally poor performance which was so bad we won't be coming back. Sad day to leave this review but yet here we are.

We've been trying to eat here forever, good luck making a reservation for 2! Everything is usually booked out and if you up the party to 3-4, you might be able to get a reservation at 9:00. We decided to come at 4PM on a Friday. It was packed!!! No way we were going to seated at a table within 2.5 hours, so we decided to brave the bar. *TIP: if you want to eat at the bar, you don't need to put your name on the main list, just go straight to the right side of the bar and put your name on the list! We were seated within an hour, which wasn't so bad, the have a cute waiting area with high tops and seats if you'd like to have a cocktail while you wait. The salad is just amazing (you won't get the salad making presentation at the bar), highly recommend putting that House of Prime seasoning on the salad, *chef's kiss* We got the House of Prime Cut and the King Henry, loaded baked potato was delicious, creamed spinach, creamed corn and mashed potato with the extra slice if you order the King Henry and can eat more! Definitely worth it. The prices are surprisingly reasonable for SF and the amount of food you get! Special thanks to Frank and Charr at the bar for being so great!

The House of Prime Rib serves well-marbled Prime Rib in the English Tradition. Their Prime Rib is carved at your table, to your specifications, all in their unique stainless steel carts that will also transport you back in time. They serve only the best beef available, the top 2% of all beef marketed. The decor at the House of Prime Rib is traditional, in the English Style. Their several dining rooms have a warm and cozy atmosphere that is enhanced by the fireplaces in the restaurant. Reservations are highly recommended. This is a San Francisco Landmark. A must visit while in the bay area.
very good indeed, the service, the salad was outstanding.
the meat and also sauce soooo goodddd.

Our server JB brought up a good topic during our dinner, can anyone recall a restaurant that has been established and open over 30 years. The answer is House of Prime Rib, San Francisco's landmark. We come here for celebrations, enjoy the food and the service.

Made a reservation here a few months in advance so definitely had high expectations coming in & the food did not disappoint! Meat was very flavorful and tender. Our party of 3 got the City Cut which is their smallest cut & were all very full afterwards. The different courses were all pretty good as well as we tried the corn, salad, mashed potatoes, and yorkshire pudding. Also ordered some cocktails & wine :) I got the Lemon Drop & they bring out the shaker as well! If you like sweet drinks, I highly recommend. Inside was pretty loud and crowded, which is fair for such a popular restaurant, but our waiter was very attentive and knowledgable. He provided good descriptions of each course before we ate
We finally tried this place after months of not remembering
We finally tried this place after months of not remembering to make a reservation. I think overall, I would give it a 5/5!Parking - we made our reservations at 10pm (lol) but there were plenty of street parking available at that time across the street. There's also valet out front for like $16 or parking garages two blocks away.Ambiance was great! Very on theme. The restaurant is huge but very nicely decorated throughout.Food - I actually think all the food was worth the price we paid. I ordered the house cut, which was around $58 - but this includes a tossed salad, bread, two sides, and the Yorkshire pudding. The salad was pretty unimpressive but the meat and the sides were delicious and really redeemed the meal. I ordered the mashed potatoes and the creamed spinach, my partner order the creamed corn. Both really good and complements the meal well. They also gave us a sweet treat for our anniversary!Recommend! Worth the hype and price.
We made a reservation for house of prime rib over a year
We made a reservation for house of prime rib over a year ago, so expectation were quite high!Coming into the restaurant, it was absolutely packed, and you can also see the beef cutting stations at every corner of the place.Starting with the bread, it was served hot, with a pretty good side of butter. The outer layer was nice and crunchy, with a soft interior. The table side salad had a strong sour taste, and some of the lettuce leaves were soggy. Not the strongest point of the night. Finally, the beef came and it really did meet my expectations. I ordered it medium rare, as they recommended and it was very juicy and tender. The side of horseradish paired so well with it. The side of spinach and mash potatoes were also pretty whatever. All in all, the beef really carried the whole night, which is why I rated it as a 4. If it wasn't for the beef, the rest of the meals were pretty average
The servers were friendly and extremely attentive.
Old school charm and ambience with amazing food! No reservation, put your name in and wait at the bar. Will be worth the wait!

I loved the general vibes and history of house of prime rib! I've always been wanting to try this restaurant so I was happy to goOrdered the go-to salad+rib set? Menu which basically came with salad, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. The salad just tasted like a normal salad to me but they give you so much I only ate half to safe space. The prime rib it self was delicious and I got the English cut bc I prefer thinner slices of meet in general. Creamed spinach was delicious. Mashed potato was also there Our waiter was so friendly as well!!! I'm glad to have tried this restaurant given that it's a sf staple but idk if I would return given how hard it is to get a reservation. I would def recommend to give it a try at least once doe
Home run every time.

The prime here was fantastic! I made a reservation to take my family here which was about 2 months ahead. (7:30pm) It was a very late dinner for us. We usually eat by 6. Drove over a hour to have dinner here.. let me tell you service was absolutely amazing! A lot of people there on a Wednesday night. Overall it was a great experience worth the drive and late dinner.

Have been coming to House of Prime Rib for over 25 years, which speaks for itself - they are consistently good. Special occasion - 60th birthday - no brainer, House of Prime Rib - make a reservation months in advance for 8 guests - guest of honor and his best friends. We were sat at 5pm and not once, were able to enjoy each other's company or the food. It was obvious they needed to turn the table by a certain time. We each ordered martinis. Didn't even have time to enjoy the cocktail before our salads were set in front of us (not prepared tableside). The servers were CONSTANTLY circling us eyeing our plates and removing them once given the ok. Same thing happened with dinner - so awkward to remove some guest's plates, while some are still eating. It was absolutely horrible. No recognition of our birthday boy (besides the obligatory scoop of ice cream at the end). We all left saying the same thing - how rushed we were and unable to share any conversation. We would have had a much higher bill if we would have been given the time. Truly a bummer - worst experience we've had in 25 years. This evening would warrant one star, but all our other experiences are in the 4-5 category, hence the 3-star rating. Avoid if you have an early reservation or larger group.
Absolutely amazing cocktails, meat, salad, and bread.
I love that they are willing to give you a doggy bag to take home and prevent food waste (also get your moneys worth)! Every server is obviously experienced and will help guide you through the food selection process. There was ample seating for people waiting & access to cocktails which was great since it was cold outside. Stunning and historic feel of San Francisco

As usual this place doesn't disappoint if you looking for a hearty prime rib meal. We arrived half hour before opening since we didn't have a reservation. They let everyone in so we can wait inside and or enjoy a cocktail! We ordered the House cut - one full meal and one a la carte style which was just minus the salad. Since I'm not a fan of their overly dressed and kinda soggy iceberg salads this was definitely the way to order from now on!! I believe it was a $9 saving. Who needs sappy salad??! We were fortunate to get two rib bones with our cut so had way too much to eat. Baked potatoes were huge. We enjoyed our leftovers for another meal so go if you're hungry or want a lot of food. $136 for two dinners and a two drinks.
Food was great as expected but just had to do a shout out
Food was great as expected but just had to do a shout out to our server Blue! A truly delightful human who made our night. 10/10 service, will definitely be back!
This place never fails to deliver.
We try to come here at least once a year. I am NOT a huge fan of red meat, but this place is an exception for me. My husband laughs because I dubbed HPR "the place with the buttery meat", it's that smooth and delicious. You need to book a reservation on open table way in advance, months! They are open late and also have an excellent bar staff. For two people, you won't leave spending less than $175. It's not super expensive and you get a lot of quality food for you dollar. It's a nice place with old school charm to celebrate a special occasion.

This place is worth the hype in my opinion as far as the food! But first you have to get in and that's the first issue. They're booked MONTHS in advance and all the available times are super late like 9pm. I was able to find an 8:30 reservation back in January so I swooped on it as it was the earliest I could find. Went in on a Wednesday night and this place was PACKED! Like there is NO slow evenings here. We arrived at 8:10 and checked in but weren't seated until close to 9pm for our 8:30 reservation so definitely an area to be improved especially when we were told our party was next to be seated and then 4 other parties got seated before we did. After that the experience was great, our server was amazing! It was all of our first time there so she explained the different cuts, and all the accompanying dishes that come with it and she checked in on us frequently and overall was a delight. I got the English cut which is 10-12oz but sliced into 3 pieces so you get a little more sauce with every bite. The prime rib was super tender and delicious! I got the creamed spinach with it which was SO good and the loaded baked potato. Instead of getting my second serving of prime rib I opted to save room for dessert and thank goodness I did. I got the pecan pie a la mode and it was SO delicious! A warm piece of pie with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream and a big helping of whipped cream! Definitely did not leave hungry!
Comparing my good experiences here and then our horrible
Comparing my good experiences here and then our horrible most recent visit is making us never come here again. The food I will say is somewhat consistent over the years but our salad was overdressed and the king Henry cut I was given was a ok sized slice with a bone from another prime rib just set on the side and not attached to the muscle. What we experienced with the service was something we haven't encountered in a long time. Originally we were going to sit in a nice corner booth (we had mad reservations ahead of time) and then i saw the server talk to the host to move us to a much smaller table on the side... we were hoping to get a booth but our server insisted to sit at a small table instead. Our server Jason seemed to not care for us; he may of judged us based on the way we look and provided subpar service than the people dressed in suits that were dining around us. He ignored us for quite some time during courses and also talked to us quite disrespectfully and giving one word responses and running away. The tone in his voice was very condescending and just wasn't the type of service we were expecting here or anywhere rather. We had seconds and i saw him with the chef and pointed at the smallest pieces to give us... the seconds were a sliver of beef, maybe 2oz tops. When asking for a to-go box he passively aggressively made comments to us and left us feeling like we didn't belong here. He said I'm not giving you that unless you eat more than half of your meal and then stormed off. We felt like we were in a bad position and being forced to do something... we ended up eating half and then he gave us the check without the Togo boxes. I asked again for the togo boxes and he sighed deeply but he returned with a box with a remark of "this is a serious big deal we aren't supposed to do this. don't do that next time."We walked out of the restaurant just thinking he had a bad day but realized we should complain. We came back and talked to the manager Evan which listened to our concerns but didn't offer anything to compensate for the horrible interactions with this server. We felt like he took our complaint and went in one ear then out the other... we left the restaurant disappointed because we have never been treated so poorly. Hoping this reaches out to someone who will consider going elsewhere.
I have been dreaming about this meal since I have had it.
House of Prime Rib serves exactly that, prime rib. You pick your cut, and sides. The options are minimal but I promise you its good. Each meal comes with a table side salad that is to die for. Whatever the dressing is set it apart. I decided to do the baked potato and creamed spinach both were delicious. The service was great. Our server was super friendly. He checked on us throughout the night. And even came and put hot au jus on our meat while we were eating. The atmosphere is nice and has an old school feel to it. If you ever find yourself in San Francisco and like meat, hit up House of Prime Rib.
