Moss Restaurant Grindavík Reviews
More form over substance.
Ate a dinner in this one star Michelin restaurant. Frankly, it’s more form rather than substance. What do I mean? The service level was very good and attentive as what you’d expect from an expensive high end restaurant. However, at times, staff did look overwhelmed when it got crowded. Not a good sign. Perhaps there’s a shortage of staff. Food wise, all dishes were presented beautifully and creatively. However, out of the seven courses Omakase style set menu I had, only two dishes stood out - the langoustine and the lamb (smoked). Both were done to perfection. The other dishes were average / so so to plain awful. An example of the latter was this Luke warm cheesy soup with summer vegetables. It was just bad! The chef who did this ought to be fired! Imagine a cheesy almost blue cheese like broth poured on raw vegetables. The dessert was just ok and the petit fours were placed in a beautiful moss tray but tasted way too sweet. Be prepared to spend > USD$750 for 2 persons at this restaurant.
Beautiful, stunning! You won’t regret it!
Truly amazing! It was the best dining experience we had in Iceland and probably for a long time! The service and attention to detail was incredible. We sat at the chefs table as the hotel had messed up our reservation and the staff at Moss made us feel so special. I am vegan and I’ve never had such an amazing vegan experience so I personally thank you for that. We also went with our 7 year old son who I was worried wouldn’t eat anything but they offered his a massive bowl of butter pasta and then steak and chips and he loved it! It’s not cheap but we felt it was worth every penny as the quality of food was exceptional and the service just made the experience unforgettable.
Moss Restaurant is not a good value
The food was good, but not as good as the price would suggest. We had a much better Michelan star dinner at Dill in Reykjavik. And the wine pairing is not a good idea unless you love white wine. There was only one glass of red.
Tasty Iceland Cuisine
The food was very delicious. My favorite dish was the cod skins and root vegetable dip. The lamb and raw fish were also good.
Views, Incredible Food and Wine, Service - Just Perfect
You have a choice of a Classic or Vegan tasing menu with wine pairings. I chose the classic and it was just wonderful from start to finish. Each dish was tasty but the presentation really upped the ante - the food was art in both presentation and flavor. The Sommelier did a wonderful job with the wine pairings and didn't blink an eye when I wanted to go a bit off course to provide the perfect pairings to suit my taste. There is a premium pairing that is available that highlights some of the best wines in the world for added luxury. Each course was perfectly proportioned so that you were full but not overly so and the pacing was perfect to enjoy each course but have the next one come in a timely fashion. A visit to the wine caves capped off a perfect night.
Wonderful food - taste and presentation - incredible location and tip top staff
Wonderful. Super food, location and staff. Even the theatrics, which I tend to dismiss, worked well here given the views and the location. Wine cellar is tremendous - go see it if you can - although a second credit card might be needed to indulge fully. OK it’s not cheap but as a treat - go for it!
Vegan price fix
We went to Moss Restaurant because they offer a five course vegan price fix and it was pretty awesome. A bit of a grey area on the vegan thing - they bring codskin chips to start, so just know going in to be aware. The restaurant itself is lovely with great ambiance and views. The menu was amazing from start to finish. Dessert was beautiful, and we were treated special for our birthdays. One note - one of the courses is a plant based steak. It was done really well if you are into the whole substitute meat thing. Overall, we really enjoyed an exceptional vegetarian meal!
A highlight of Iceland & their culinary experiences — must try!
One of the best degustation & wine matches I’ve ever tried. The staff here friendly, informed & excited about sharing their menu, it was a great atmosphere. The tasting menu was creative, fresh and themed beautifully with the Icelandic landscapes. I highly recommend this place & it was a highlight of the trip. Thank you again.
Fantastic experience!
Beautiful six course meal with wine pairings next to a crackling wood fire. Amazing presentation of food with each course. A great way to relax after a wonderful day in the spa. The dessert was to die for.
Very special experience
The "theatre" of the tasting menu is a lovely experience, made even better by the staff and It's a added bonus that the food is great as well.
Good experience with incredible dishes
We had a good time in the restaurant and both regular and vegetarian menus were good. Presentation of dishes is like a show and you will really love spending one diner at the Moss table. Wine pairing is for me a bit expensive regarding the menu, you double the price if you afford the wine pairing experience.
Worth Every Penny
I cannot say enough wonderful things about this restaurant! My husband and I were staying at the Retreat and had dinner here in our last evening and it was worth every penny! We chose the regular tasting menu with the wine pairing and it was amazing. Our server Sandra was a delight and guided us through the menu every step of the way, The sommelier was amazing and so helpful with the wine choices, Our dinner service lasted 3 1/2 hours and it flew by. If you stay at The Retreat I highly recommend dining at Moss.
