Good typical restaurant
Ideal for local cuisine. Good and hearty dishes. Served with accompaniments The garlic bread was excellent.....and the desserts looked exquisite and homemade, I recommend it

We ate very well. The black saber with banana is a delight. Excellent value for money. Only small downside: a little noisy.
Be the first to ReplyI really liked it and recommend this restaurant.
Pleasant atmosphere, we eat very well, and it's good. And above all the staff are friendly. Thank you, we had a nice time.
Be the first to ReplyA real recommendation!!! For us one of the best restaurants in Funchal.
A typical Portuguese restaurant. The decor isn't very impressive - but the food was fantastic. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. This is what you would expect from an insider tip.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent and hearty meal
The fish is excellent, the meals are very generous. The value for money is good and the service is very fast. The decor immerses us in the Portuguese atmosphere. This is my favorite restaurant in Funchal ๐

Super typical restaurant offering very good value for money for simple cuisine The dishes are very good and the establishment is frequented by locals Highly recommended
Be the first to ReplyOverall ok but not good
I donโt understand the good reviews. It was okay! We had the seafood Salat which did not taste like seafood more like the cocktail sauce. We had the skewer and the espada with gamabs- both ok but not really good.

We were recommended his place by our hotel staff and we weren't disappointed. We ended up dining here every night. The food was exceptional so was the service. My partner and I especially enjoyed filler mignon espetada skewers. Real authentic food and amazing, very friendly service. Recommend to everyone

Highly recommend this restaurant, food was amazing, having tried their filler mignon and scabbard fish. We ended up coming here 3 times, we're always greeted with the smile. All the staff are very attentive, very reasonable price for exceptional food. This place is always busy, the service and food speaks for itself
Be the first to ReplyI must be good if the locals frequent on a daily basis
We visit Madeira on a regular basis and typically our first nightโs dinner is at A Bica. We had the fish platter for two which consisted of numerous types of grilled fish, including tuna and squid. This came with an array of side dishes โ boiled potatoes, salad, vegetables which we could not do justice to as the fish was so plentiful and represented excellent value for money. Reserving a table for lunch or dinner is recommended or, if you are happy to wait, then you can join the queue which gathers on the stair.
Be the first to ReplyAverage
After reading many great reviews of that restaurant, we decided to give it a go as it was also next door to our hotel and the prices seemed reasonable. Weโve found it, however, simply average. Iโve ordered a tomato and onion soup with a poached egg as I love it and have it every time I come to Madeira. Unfortunately, the soup tasted strongly of vinegar - I think thatโs because of their method of cooking poached eggs. The egg seemed covered in vinegar. Also, it had some type of small branches of spices (rosemary?) that I kept biting on while trying to eat the soup. My daughter had a banana scabbard fish and found it fine, just too sweet because of the sauce. Also, when we ordered, the waiter hadnโt asked her what she would like with her fish and then brought the actual meal and three more plates of potatoes, rice and some weird greens (beans?) to the table - the fish was served with a side salad anyway. I wish heโd asked - as so much food had gone to waste - the fish was large, so sheโd only managed to eat two potatoes (out of eight I think) left the rice plate and the other dish untouched. The place is very small, like a basement, the elderly gentleman who served us food was friendly, however the lady over the counter should try to smile a bit more I think. We wonโt be returning, there are much better restaurants in Madeira.
Be the first to ReplyWelcoming hideaway with lovely local food
Easy to overlook but well worth seeking out, a Bica is a family run basement restaurant opposite the north side of the fish and vegetable market, right in the centre of town. Always busy and the food is excellent, with the best of the local produce and a warm friendly atmosphere. The portion sizes are enormous though so be warned, even though the prices are very reasonable and less than the typical Old Town tourist eateries! For example my wife ordered grilled scabbard fish which was delicious, but it came on the bone and the portion was twice the size of those found elsewhere. Also be aware that they serve it "with everything", and boy do they mean it! It comes with boiled potatoes AND chips AND rice AND broccoli which is surely overkill? Many diners were leaving the majority of the side dishes, a terrible waste. We both had their tomato and onion soup as a starter beforehand. This is a massive plateful and comes with a fried egg on top. It is delicious, but with a generous portion of garlic bread its a meal in itself before the main course appears. So, lovely little restaurant with fantastic food at very reasonable prices, but MUST have a huge appetite to do it justice.

We recommend scabbard fish with banana (the sauce was divine but might be sweet for some!), tuna and scabbard fish on skewers. Tuna was so fresh, it just melted in the mouth!!! Come early to avoid having to queue (by 7:30pm). We came twice in a week.

I read previous reviews of this restaurant & hastened to make a reservation. I'm glad we did as it was packed & others were waiting when we arrived. The food was excellent & very reasonable. We had starter house salad with garlic bread, the pork snitzel (which comes with chips, rice & seasonal vegetables) dessert & a bottle of the house wine for โฌ36.00-a bargain. On another occasion we tried the more traditional limpets & scabbard fish-equally delicious & reasonably priced. Staff were pleasant & eager to please. I would highly recommend this restaurant to all visitors to Funchal.
Be the first to ReplyA Deservedly Popular Restaurant
Chose this restaurant after reading Tripadvisor reviews, and it lived up to its reputation. Situated down a flight of stairs and with no street frontage to speak of, this place is well worth searching out. Food is excellent, staff are efficient and friendly and prices reasonable. What more could you ask for? A word of caution, however. It is very popular, and you will probably have to queue. For any party larger than 2, booking is advisable. Thoroughly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyGreat local restaurant
Found this resturant by chance. The entrance is down a flight of stairs to the basement. The place is light and welcoming. It does get busy and you may have to wait for a table but it's worth it. You can also book a table. Staff speak very good English and the menu is in a number of languages. The food is local and made from quality ingredients. Their prices are very reasonable and the portions are large. We had many return visits during our months holiday. Thank you to all the great staff.
