Alla Vita, a new restaurant from the BOKA Group, bills itself as "Italian-American" food and a family-style menu. They feel free to take liberties with classic dishes, with good results. It's an attractive large space with a long bar along one wall, a large airy main space with a pergola-type construction and a large ceiling hanging of undulating beige fabric that's meant to evoke ribbons of lasagna. At the back is a smaller room behind a wall of windows looking out on the larger room. The paint is dark and the chandeliers provide subdued lighting in there but it's far quieter than the main dining area.
It took weeks to get a reservation for a mid-week 7 pm slot. We arrived early and had to wait for a table but a few minute before the appointed time, the host said he would seat us early if we would promise to vacate the table by 8:30. We accepted and were shown to a great table in the smaller back room by a big window where we could overlook the action in the main dining room. We decided it was a highly desirable table.
We learned from the waitress that dishes are designed to share, so are generously sized. She recommended a couple appetizers to share, a pasta and a large dish from the "forno" section. Having quizzed the host about the pizzas and hearing him rhapsodize about their wonderful crisp and puffy crust, we wanted to try one. We opted for 2 apps (roasted octopus and wood-fired meatballs in roasted tomato sauce); the chopped salad; a mushroom pizza with black truffle; and squash-filled agnolotti. We skipped the "forno" section of the menu. I also had a delicious cocktail, "Under the Pergola", an aperol-based drink with citrus and served with a big sprig of salted rosemary.
Food started coming promptly after it was ordered but in courses and hot from the kitchen. While we enjoyed it all, the stand-out dish for us was the octopus which was almost crunchy and in a great creamy/garlicky sauce with fried chickpeas and chopped herbs. We couldn't finish the pizza and brought half home for lunch the next day; the crust survived the trip, being refrigerated overnight and reheated very well.
We also had dessert, the apple ricotta cake with maple (?) ice cream. My companion had an espresso made with Sparrow coffee which he enjoyed.
Service was smooth and competent. Our waitress was helpful in deciding what to order and checked up several times to see we were happy with the dishes after we tasted them. There seemed to be no shortage of staff to bring dishes from the kitchen, refill water glasses, remove used plates and utensils.
We left just under 90 minutes after we were seated as promised. We will definitely be back to try more of the menu....if we can get another reservation.
Dinner for 2 with tax but before tip came to $144, including a 3% surcharge for employee benefits.
