A couple weeks back, AL's Place SF suddenly announced they were closing for good. Chef-owner Aaron London expressed to the San Francisco Chronicle that he wanted to focus more on family at this stage in his life. With one Michelin star and seven years of producing arguably one of the best examples of unique and vegetable-focused California cuisine, AL's Place will be missed. As soon as I saw the news, I tried to look up reservations for their final week, grasping onto what minuscule hope I had. Of course, they were already booked out. But the universe does work in funny ways.I've been going through some very difficult times this past month, and I was crying in bed one morning when a friend texted me about an extra spot for AL's place that night. This was during their final week of service. This, along with a few other events that day, felt quite serendipitous and got me out of bed.Dinner that night was incredible - we definitely over ordered for two, but that meant leftover brine-pickled fries the next day. I will miss the freaking delicious food, the wacky ingredient combos, and the quirky names.

Chewy meat in a Michelin starred restaurant is not acceptable. The fact that the prix fixe is selected to minimize the cost of the dinner (while costing more than ordering individual dishes ti replicate it!) Was icing on the cake.

Delicious and pleasantly presented food. Excellent wines! Wonderful evening
Be the first to ReplyFor the last twelve years I've known my partner, we always
For the last twelve years I've known my partner, we always carve out an evening for a special birthday meal in the springtime. Since 2014, we've made a point to enjoy a tasting menu at a Michelin starred restaurant in the Bay Area. It always feels like a bit of a splurge - something we would feel guilty spending on, even if the experience is worth it. This was the one place that didn't make us feel guilty. It was just that good.We sometimes reminisce and make a list of the most memorable places we've ever eaten. Again and again, at the top of our personal list - and perhaps our favorite meal that we've ever eaten together - was dinner at AL's place. Thinking back, this was before 2020... I can't recall the name of each dish or every glass that arrived at our table. I can remember exactly how it felt: it was fun and different, everything was astoundingly fresh and a pleasure to see and taste. I remember how the kitchen and dining room looked: charming and inspired. We and seemingly everyone in the room were simply delighted at what we were all enjoying. We are lucky we had the chance to go back twice in the ensuing years and it only added to the positive memories. We've visited lots of countries, and lots of cities. Here was certainly one of the few times we could say we had an 'above five' star meal. We truly wish the very best to everyone who is a part of the restaurant and the farm behind it. Thank you.
Be the first to ReplyVegetable-forward experience.
Lots of bold dishes to explore fresh vegetable flavors. I got to sit close to the chef's counter and got to watch the chef load literally a handful of vegetables and assemble the salad. It was quite fun to watch. I felt the meat was mostly meant to complement the vegetables instead of the other way around. Sad to see that they're closing. While the dishes weren't the most memorable to me, many dishes had protruding sour flavors (especially the salads), I wish more restaurants would follow their footsteps and make more vegetable-forward dishes.

Just a note to say Al's Place has been my favorite restaurant in SF. I'm sad to see them close! I've loved the plant-forward creativity in their dishes--the pickle-brined fries and cracked cucumbers have become core memories for me. My partner and I celebrated many life moments here, and I'm grateful for all the heart and hard work the team put into AL's Place. Thanks, Aaron and team!

Chef accommodated dietary restrictions for 5 of us. We were served marcona almonds with vadouvan spice, cracked cukes with peanut sauce, corn bone chawanmushi, and brine pickled French fries (not my favorite) as starters. We also got salad of baby lettuces with herb avocado, raw hamachi with spicy pluots for the cold dishes. Followed by grits with goat milk curds and corn (way too spicy for us!). The smoked brisket was melt in your mouth while the duck breast with blackberry mole is a bit on the vinegary taste for me. Service was efficient and attentive. Wine pairing was generous ($54)
Be the first to ReplyDo family style, absolutely worth it.
Very inventive dishes and a great variety of flavors. Hidden gem in the outer mission. Will be returning for another special dinner!

We dined with a group of 5 and had some pretty complicated restrictions. Of the 5, 1 was vegetarian, 1 was gluten free, and 1 was allergic to dairy, eggs and pineapple. We were assured the kitchen could do a family style meal accommodating everyone, so we dove in and ordered family style. It's a rare occasion that a kitchen can accommodate such extensive allergies without anyone feeling like they're missing something but AL's Place did an outstanding job of it. The food was incredible all around and we left feeling like we might need to be pushed home wheelbarrows. I can't believe it's taken me so long to have dinner here, I look forward to coming back. The drinks were also delicious and very well done for not having a full liquor license. All around a very lovely and non pretentious dining experience. I will mention that they were very clear about not taking walk ins because they were completely booked and they do adhere to a very strict time policy where they turn tables efficiently (regardless of whether you order family style with ~8 courses or not) so don't expect to hang out and linger.
