Bad...do not go
I don't normally do this but this place was bad...really bad. The portions were small, the priced were exorbitant, and the food did not taste good. Not sure why they are on the Bib Gourmand but this is a must skip.

Oh. Really terrible. Chef forgot the order. Took an hour to come. A pasta dish. That was tiny and just all salt. What a pity.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and environment!
Restaurant located in our hotel - had a great vibe and menu with regular and a few vegan options. Open to the sidewalk with fresh air which was nice. Great food and drink; excellent service.

Comfortable space attached to the hotel with significant outdoor seating and ventilation. Menu is interesting and has lots of veg options with several pizzas as well. Many items can be ordered from the restaurant to take to your room at the neighboring Eaton DC hotel.

Ate here twice during my stay at the Eaton DC. The bartenders were so kind and made my meals very enjoyable. I would eat at the American Son for every meal for my next visit to DC - such a diverse and worldly menu! Thanks for everything!!

We had an excellent dinner at American Son -- a surprise, since the menu doesn't have much to choose from if you don't eat meat or shellfish. Nevertheless we found enough: yellowtail hamachi crudo for the first course, and fried whole fish for the main course. We shared each of these courses and -- to our surprise -- we were too full for dessert.
The yellowtail was excellent. It was fresh and set off well by its passionfruit-jalapeno dressing. The macadamia nuts were a good addition, but the puffed rice was inspired, giving it just the right mixture of silky, crunchy, and crispy. If only there had been bread to sop up the last of the dressing. (The restaurant doesn't serve bread, to accommodate its gluten-intolerant patrons, our server said. That's a bum reason, as far as I am concerned.)
The whole fried fish -- snapper the night we were there -- looked skimpy on its platter, but the sweet meat was so plentiful that it easily satisfied us. The atypical fried rice (did they start with black rice or did it turn black in cooking?) was tasty alongside, but we did not like the kim chee. However, the chef saved the day with an extremely delicious green salad with blue-cheese dressing. I'd go back for that salad alone.
We shared a "Pear" -- a cocktail of gin, pear brandy, pear cordial, and a touch of absinthe. It was delicate, almost floral, and yummy.
Our bill came to under $90, and while we didn't have a lot of food, we were sated when we finished. We didn't even have room for one of the desserts; I would have chosen the butterscotch panna cotta or the deconstructed s'mores. Next time.
Home Run
Just tried for RW and very impressed. Each dish was cooked by real talent. A lot of places call themselves American bistros, but this actually seems to embody that. Serious food, casual atmosphere.

Loved the food and the service. Tried the Pear cocktail and was not disappointed. Three of us split the quail as an appetizer. I had the rabbit rigatoniโ all was delicious!

I was staying at Eaton and had lunch twice here. The food was delicious. The wait staff were pleasant and knowledgeable. It is definitely a good place for those that think about what they are consuming. It is also good for groups and even solo diners.
