Azurmendi jatetxea Larrabetzu Reviews from The Last Year
Underwhelming and Souless
After enjoying several culinary experiences at other Basque Michelin-starred restaurants, Azurmendi was at the top of our list. Driving an hour from San Sebastián, we were wowed by its contemporary architecture, sustainable energy program and picturesque landscape. However, once seated, we immediately noticed a lack of attention and professional service from the staff. The food, while presented beautifully, lacked flavor, intensity and continuity. There seemed to be no thru-line for our gastro journey, and the chef’s intentions were not made clear. After nearly six courses, we still could not find our “wow” moment. A major disappointment was the wine pairings with our meal; pours were noticeably small and the selections were rather average. Some “lows” were the bland white asparagus, the bizarre chocolate-covered pigeon balls, and the pork dish (a meatball and pork rind accompanied by a hoof-meat ravioli). Dessert was also a miss and by the time the petit fours were served, we had lost our appetite for the overly-sweet selections. Not worth the time or money. We found far better choices in the region
Great food, gimmicky experience
Of all the restaurants we ate at in Spain, this was the most consistently delicious. Top notch food, and a lot of it. However, it also gimmicky. First we ate snacks/small-bites in the picnic room; then we moved to the kitchen for some delicious truffle dishes; and then finally we were ushered into the "secret garden" for some final small bites. Only then were we seated at the table. What did all this moving around achieve? The picnic room is not particularly attractive, and it was frankly a bit cold on our stormy day. The kitchen experience, however, was the most frustrating. We ate several delicious truffle items in the kitchen. However, this food is extremely rich, and there was no water. In addition, the waiter sits there and watches you eat, which I found quite uncomfortable and a bit rushing. Hence, one of the most expensive parts of the meal was not what it should be. Just serve us at the table! The wait staff was good, but needs a bit more precision. Plates, for instance, were often not put on the table in the proper position, forcing me to move them in order to center it.
An unforgettable gastronomic experience
We were eating taking advantage of a gift voucher from the Eneko Menu. This is a different restaurant. Very friendly and extremely correct staff, who give the client personalized treatment. Explaining the different dishes would be an unaffordable task for a non-professional cook, but what is appreciated in each of them is a laborious, magnificent preparation, and the excellent result. I don't know if it deserves the three stars because for me it has five. You won't leave hungry, that's for sure. It has a large parking lot. In short: an unforgettable gastronomic experience.
The best
Unique experience: a true tasting journey and discovery of the area. It's a shame the chef wasn't there, but his team was prepared and welcoming.
Craftsmanship, not art, of excellence
It is the second time we visited the restaurant and it must be said, it seemed to us that everything was basically the same, except the price. In other words, the menu is very good but not too surprising. A prodigy of execution, of goldsmithing or culinary craftsmanship we could say, but far from the genius or surprises of gastronomic art of before. Everything went like clockwork, as expected in a three-star establishment, the service was impeccable and very pleasant and in the end, it seems that Azurmendi has been infected by the inflated prices that Diverxo and other chefs of the same level began to practice (not all of them). They have started to follow. Two tasting menus with a bottle of champagne (triple the market price) for 860 euros
Unforgettable and very enjoyable experience
The place is simply extraordinary. All details have been considered to create a unique and unforgettable experience for diners. Furthermore, Aitor is excellent in his explanations for Pairing. Zorionak, Eneko Atxa and the entire team!
Had a wonderful experience at Azurmendi.
The space is beautiful, it really is worth the drive for this alone. The experience begins in the lounge area with a living wall, you're served an aperitif and the opening canapes as well. From there, you progress to the kitchen for more canapes. Then to another room for guess what? More canapes. And finally to the main dining room, lined with floor to ceiling glass windows, to finish the canapes and move onto the meal. The canapes are all very good - flavors super concentrated, presentations beautiful and creative, a wonderful start to the menu. The remainder of our meal had both highs and lows, some wonderful dishes and others I felt weren't quite there given the reputation of the restaurant, especially some of the main protein entrees. Still, this is a wonderful experience and if you're into fine dining, and must visit, so I can't deduct any stars for something that may be more of a preference thing. Service is exceptional, the team doesn't miss a beat and is very coordinated. We didn't dive too deep into the wines, but the somm was fantastic. The list of wines by the glass was my main gripe, from what I saw they were almost as expensive as some of the bottles. I'm sure you can request glasses from the pairing but we didn't ask - had a long drive after this and didn't want to drink too heavily at lunch. Bread service was ok here - didn't love any of the breads and we ran out of olive oil a couple times. Desserts were also ok - they were good but not memorable. The grounds are awesome - they have animals living on the hills leading up to the restaurant.
Unforgettable
Unique experience. The food is incredible, both quality and flavor. But the service is unsurpassed, all the hardworking people are very professional, approachable and with a sense of humor. They make the experience unforgettable.
Essential.
Last gastronomic point of our vacation, we had to repeat, years later, the visit to Azurmendi. This is a restaurant where you come to enjoy a gastronomic experience, from the reception in that greenhouse hall where you start with the aperitif picnic, then we move on to the garden, where we taste flowers and leaves (delicious) and in the kitchen, where we witness the coordination and tight and rehearsed movements of the kitchen staff; to finish at our table where the main part of the menu is displayed, a technically impeccable, perfect menu, with absolutely defined flavors and exact cooking. It is a true luxury and, definitely, the best lobster I have tasted to date. Azurmendi is an essential restaurant. Its international pairing is at a high level and its staff is attentive and professional. Congratulations. Without a doubt one of the best restaurants in the country.
A unique experience
Can you say something new and original about a world-renowned and triple-Michelin-starred place? I don't think so. It is an unbeatable experience, at another gastronomic level, with a professional team that makes the visit exceed any expectations one may have. In this privileged enclave you will enjoy a journey through several rooms until you reach the main dining room, spacious and with perfect distances. Your table space is far enough away from the rest of the tables to have the necessary privacy so you can enjoy the magic that is about to begin. Everything is designed to the millimeter: both in the presentations and in the sequence of the dishes. A culinary play in which you are going to be the protagonist.
This is my type of Michelin 3-star restaurant.
Everything, from the setting to the food to the service, felt balanced. And ethereal. I was transported to a different space with the lush greens surrounding the interior and exterior of the restaurant. I was indoors, yet it felt like I was having a meal outdoors the whole time. The grandeur of the dining space felt classy yet unfussy, even though we were seated at a giant table with white tablecloths. The food also tread a delicate balance between technique, flavor and presentation. I find that often, Michelin-starred restaurants focus a lot on displaying their technical prowess at transforming ingredients and plating the food in an artful way, at the compromise of the flavor and heartiness of the dish. But nothing at Azurmendi felt forced or overly complicated, the majority-seafood ingredients were allowed to shine and presented gorgeously with edible flowers. (I'm a sucker for those flowers.) The technical transformations were mostly in the earlier part of the meal. I was most impressed by the truffle jus infusion into an egg yolk (that the poor guy had to do in front of us), the basil twig, and the asparagus "maki". My favorite dishes were the lemongrass jelly with foie gras served in a lime bowl, the sashimi taco, the shrimp OMG THE SHRIMP (the blue paste is natural coloring from their brain or something?), the milk bread that came with the shrimp, and the poached lobster. 110% would come back. 1. Welcome Picnic ("Lemon Grass", Smoked fish brioche, Joselito "polvorón", Marianito) 2. The Truffle's Table (Truffled egg, Truffled meringue, Apple and truffle) 3. The Garden (Cauliflower, Basil, Rose and Nectar, Leaf) 4. Rose and Nectar 5. From the sea: Crab; Sea "talo"; Roe 6. OYSTER and sea granita and seaweed 7. SHRIMP and herbal essence 8. Milk Bread 9. Teardrop PEAS, Iberian gel and fermented pods juice 10. FOREST essence 11. Roasted and peeled LOBSTER, grilled pepper juice 12. COD and chickpea 13. Iberian PORK, duxelle and truffle 14. "Lost" BREAD and mead 15. COFFEE and caramel TOFFEE 16. Petits fours
Very good but not great
The picnic and garden of flowers were the highlight. All the first part was very nice. The second part was more inconsistent with one dish just terrible and the desert being one the the most incredible we ever ate. The wine pairing was regular, nothing special. The restaurant is more prone to the performance (although we found lipstick mark in one of our glasses, unacceptable for a 3* service) than for the food. I only had the “Hummmmm” effect in 2 dishes. It was nice to have the experience but considering the price, I think they need to improve the menu. I am not being picky, just honest about how we felt.
Possibly the Best Meal I Have Ever Eaten
What a fantastic dining experience. Our lunch started with a 'picnic basket' in the lobby that had four delicious small bites (a pork merengue, a tiny brioche, a 'Lemongrass' foix gras and one other that I'm forgetting) and a glass of Txakoli wine. Then, we moved into the kitchen where they served us three truffle bites each of which were STUNNING before taking us to their 'conservation' room where we had some amazing experimental dishes. All that was before we sat down for our prefix menu! Their use of vegetables and mushrooms throughout the prefix menu was stunning and imaginative. Additionally, the Sommelier was helpful and knowledgeable about pairing beverages with the food. It was a lovely experience where I got to sit and appreciate every bite.
Everything at Azurmendi was presented beautifully however
Everything at Azurmendi was presented beautifully however the taste did not match the beauty. We had the pleasure of also meeting Eneko. For those who don't know(spoiler), the meal is broken down into the intro picnic basket, followed by bites in the kitchen and in the flower garden then at the table. The picnic basket was a pleasant surprise and everything was fine. The foiegra was a bit bitter. The signature truffle egg was pretty terrible. The uni 3 ways was extremely bitter and was clearly out of season. The Final pork dish was beautifully plated but absolutely inedible. Not a fan of. Finally the recycled bread ice cream cone was terrible. Sad to make ice cream bad. That being said some bites were good (lobster taco, lobster main, caviar bite) but for a restaurant of this caliber, they had way too many misses. All in all in Basque country there are so many better options. We went to Asador Extebarri which was AMAZING. For other 3 stars I wish I had gone to Arzak or mugaritz.

This app is a catfish and overrun by people programming “bots” and algorithms. It makes it frustrating for someone not well versed in this to have any movement. I thought this would be a fun side hustle, but unfortunately it’s become like any other “side hustle”. Don’t waste your time with this crap. Not a question, just a suggestion. Also don’t pay these fake “gurus” hundreds of dollars to teach you. Might as well sign up for a software class. 😕

Might depend on what market you're in? Some have not been developed yet and some are still growing. Make some reservations ahead of time and post them for sale and get ahead of the bot bids? IDK.

I totally agree with you. I’ve had the same thought and issues. But there’s no way to stop it as far as I know, unfortunately. I was worried this was going to happen and apparently it has😞
