We were looking forward to it based on the reviews and the months of stalking she did to secure a reservation. However, there were a lot of things about this dining experience that did not click for me, especially at this price point. Let's start out with the reservation process. I understand that some places are in demand and you have to wait your turn in line. But they require a $500 prepayment along with the reservation. I would prefer a $100-$200 cancellation fee. How do I know that the surprise menu upon dining will be the same yummy food that I read about in these reviews? I've never had to do that before - not at Saison, French Laundry, La Folie, Coi, or any other restaurant for that matter. And I'm not just talking about French restaurants. The one thing that I really look out for in restaurants in addition to the food is the service. I found the environment to be stuffy, and the atmosphere was not very welcoming. Sure, fine dining involves a bit of formality. Being born and raised in San Francisco, there have been many wonderful restaurants that have come and gone. And despite very formal environments, the people in those restaurants can make you feel like you are right at home. Not that we expect to be treated like royalty, but at the very least like Harry and Meghan after losing their royal titles. Victor and the lady with the short hair and tattoos seemed fine, but there was a stiffness and sizing up vibe from the others. Sometimes, we might not order more wine at dinner if there is a long drive ahead of us. While we were not dressed casually, we were not wearing suits or evening gowns either. But most fancy restaurants will not size you up for that. Of course, we are in the Marina district, so there will be some level of superficial judgment I suppose. On a positive note, there were some dishes that I thoroughly enjoyed. I liked the trout (main course) and the abalone the best. The bone marrow custard was also quite tasty. The presentation of all the dishes was excellent. There was definitely a level of care in their preparation, matching and presentation. For me, the other dishes that I did not mention above did not provide the same level of joy as the trout or the abalone, or the bone marrow. One other pleasant surprise is the apple-themed dessert, which is often botched by other fancy restaurants. In all, while still a very solid dining experience, there are other restaurants that I have liked better (food and service) that did not require extensive stalking + a $500 prepayment. Also, I have felt much more welcome at other restaurants. I often say that nice restaurants get a bad rap for people thinking that they are stuffy. In this case, perhaps they are right.
