Great food with nostalgic feeling.
This is an old deli with traditional Jewish deli menu and excellent selection of smoked fish. Sandwiches are great, especially hot pastrami, even matzo ball soup is flavorful and has proper thin noodles. We had smoked trout, excellent flavor and serving is a full fish. Pickles are wonderful, even full sour have great crunch. Will be coming back for sturgeon and sable. The place is old, crumped with waiters in white uniforms, seems like will fall apart any minute, but yet does not, and there is definitely charm in it. No credit cards, pay to the guy at the counter. There is an equally crumped storefront with all the delicacies in very narrow quarters. Real New York Jewish deli experience, especially if you into smoked fish or good pastrami and pickles.

Their salmon and pastrami are delicious. Bagels in many different flavours. Coffee unlimited. The place to be for an excellent breakfast.

48 usd for a simple breakfast. And did not taste well. The waiter was not nice. I feel cheated. Will not come back ๐คฎ

This deli is slightly off the tourist trail, but not too far from Central Park and worth a detour. The speciality dishes are centred around fish and we had pastrami salmon with scrambled eggs and a salmon and cream cheese bagel. The food was great and the atmosphere and set up of the deli old school. There is seating inside and outside.

I usually shop for lox and sable at Zabar's but thought I'd try Barney Greengrass out. The sable was good. The pickled lox was a real rip-off! Zabar's charges by the pound and weighs the chunk of salmon only. And the creamed onions are a separate package and included in the price. Greengrass however, has the pickled salmon already combined in a jar which means you're paying the high price for onions and not just the salmon. The bagels were very good I bought there. But I will not buy from this place again. Sorry, but facts are facts. At $46/pound, I don't expect to pay that for cream sauce or onions!
Be the first to ReplyA slapdash deli where the meal was not memorable
Barney Greengrass is a true Jewish deli where you can get just about any kind of smoked fish you can imagine. But it is tired and I'm guessing not too clean. The service was a bit of a performance but that doesn't mean it was good or enjoyable. We were frankly a bit disappointed -- the food itself was MEH.

Sturgeon king? Oh yeah, the sturgeon is great. We took a ride to the upper west side, skipping our normal stop Russ and Daughters, to dine here specifically for their smoked sturgeon and nova onion scrambled eggs. The sturgeon was fantastic and a lighter option to lox or Nova. The nova scrambled eggs were surprisingly light with delicate flavors, the onions made the dish, and the nova got a bit lost in my mind. The true highlight was the chopped liver we picked up to go. Life altering, though I'll admit I don't have much experience with the dish. I'm not a fan of liver, but their chopped liver was absolutely sublime. No hint of organ flavor or graininess. New Orleans murals around the dining room are old school and service is beyond friendly. I was a tourist, but they treated us like regulars....and the other guests seemed to all be regulars.

This is a NY institution and everything an appetizing joint was back in the day and should be today. I keep returning to refine the perfect order and still want to order the entire menu. Must try the latkes and every fish available on the side. The eggs and onions are sweet and delicious. The meat eaters swear by the chopped liver. Get in line, meet your fellow neighbor or visitor and have enough time to walk it off!

So Iโve been coming here for nearly 50 years and have always enjoyed the smoked fish sandwiches and platters . Yesterdayโs visit, my first since COVID , felt like visiting an old friend. The bails sandwiches were tasty and the atmosphere was what it always has been. However, the potions have shrunk dramatically. Our sandwiches were minuscule as compared to what they used to be. Each sandwich was finished in four bites as the bagels are now much smaller and the amount of fish was tiny. The latke plate was the same size and delicious. Perhaps BG is resisting raising prices, which is appreciated , but clearly they are making up the difference by shrinking portions

Always a wonderful experience visiting this place for my bagel fix. This is an old-world style establishment.

Really loved this place, very friendly staff, AMAZING smoked salmon bagels and scrambled eggs, shame we came on our last day in NYC, we will come back next time we are over for sure!

Weโve been going to this place in NY visits for years and always loved it. But we made a trek up here on our first post-Covid visit (to introduce our daughter to great NY deli fare) and it was a complete bust. Service was slow and disinterested, food was mediocre at best. (Latkes were room temperature, matzah soup was like dishwater, even the bagels were barely adequate). Felt like we wasted a meal on a short NY visit.

Signage outside partially obstructed by scaffolding. The โSturgeon Kingโ portion blocked. Ordered eggs with sturgeon, lox and onions on a sesame seed bagel and enjoyed the dining area. Bought some Halavah and pastrami lox to go next door at the take out section. Cash Only. Vaccination papers not requested but oral attestation deemed sufficient. Masks worn inside even with vaccination. Great place.
