It disappeared altogether, I think, even before Covid, so it’s impressive that it has emerged from the pandemic stronger than ever. This, I suspect, is because it has a more informal menu evidenced by quite a large proportion of those dining this Saturday lunchtime tucking into brunch-ey favourites such as omelettes aux fines herbes or smoked salmon and frites. In fact my wife sampled smoked salmon herself. My daughter opted for fish goujons, a sort of French version of fish gingers whilst I sampled the signature dish coq au Riesling. I recall a coq au vin here served with vegetables in a large pot. Coq au Riesling comprised two chicken thighs on a plate with a silky mash and a sophisticated sauce with grapes. But I couldn’t help thinking one pays here for the upkeep of these elegant premises with artistic posters on the walls - think an advertisement for a Maurice Esteve exhibition next to one for the French Alps by rail in the 1930s - than the cuisine as many of the ingredients are altogether more prosaic. There is an extensive wine list but beer has to be specifically requested. A pint of fruity meteor went down a treat.
