A beautiful place with wonderful décor and ambience, great presentation of food but for a Michelin star chef's restaurant in an international city like Madrid, BUT ultimately English comprehension challenges eventually resulted in a rather unhappy visit. I am a native English speaker with a rather plain American accent, I also speak some conversational Spanish.I made a reservation for myself fully expecting to be seated at the bar given how nearly full they were at time of booking, but get a table instead of a bar seat and was delighted. The lighting and décor were exquisite. The food and presentation similarly so, though I should have trusted my instincts and gone with the sea bass instead of the duck. The waitress recommended the duck, so I thought why not, and then asks if I wanted it done medium. I am not familiar with eating incompletely cooked poultry so I said well done and it turned out rather tough to chew on (well done is does not equal stiff... it is VERY possible to cook duck fully and have it still achieve the perfect texture that gives way in weaves of fiber to the bite). Anyway there are different styles of cooking, I made a bad choice, but still having a great experience.I finish my meal being VERY full, ask for the check and go to the bathroom for a few minutes. When I come back I figured there would be a check on my table (this being a very busy and popular place after all), but instead my entire table had been cleared out and there were two new customers seated where I was seated. I thought to myself "oh, I guess I should just find a waiter to tell them I need to pay," so I did, found a waiter I had seen before and told him this in English. He apologized, which felt appropriate as I literally lost my seat and was standing awkwardly in the middle of the restaurant, and he offered to serve me a drink on the house, I told him I appreciate the gesture but I am very full. He then asked again if there was anything else he could offer me, I said no but if he wanted to he could just take the cocktail I already had for dinner off the bill. He nods and seats me at the bar and asks me to wait. He talks to the bartender across the bar, and comes back and says "we will give you another drink, OK?" and I clarified that I did NOT want another drink, repeating that I was too full and I just wanted to pay so I can leave. He nods and said yes, but I wasn't sure he understood me, so I said in Spanish, "estoy completamente lleno, no lo quiero" (I am completely full, I don't want it), and gestured saying no drink. He said "lleno" rubbed his belly understandingly and left me be at the bar. I wait patiently for someone to bring me the check. 5 minutes pass by, then 10, then 15, then 20, then 25. I start to feel like I am being held hostage by this unpaid bill, very much wishing to get on my way already. At that point the bartender gets ready to light a cocktail and said it was for me, and in exasperation, I told him I didn't want it. I asked to speak to the manager, who was appropriately apologetic, and I told him what happened (he was already aware) and that additionally now I had waited 25 minutes just to pay and leave. I had explained that I had offered if they wanted to, to just take the drink off my bill for taking my seat/table away from me while I was in the bathroom, but now additionally I had to wait 25 minutes. He nodded and said he would do that and came back with a bill, minus the drink. I paid for an appetizer and main course including bread service and VAT, and it was 41.50 euro. Forget about any tip. Then I thought, on the bright side, not bad for dining at a Michelin star restaurant. I paid the bill but still felt rather unhappy. Losing my seat first then having the waiter misunderstand me after I tried to communicate in both English and Spanish, then sitting uncomfortably at the bar where I didn't belong for almost half an hour, what a way to treat a customer. On my way out, I spoke with the manager to let him know it was initially quite a happy solo dining experience at the recommendation of a friend from Madrid, but in the end I could feel my patience and understanding wearing down. I told him explicitly, "I just want to let you know not to be surprised to see a negative review online." He apologized, said he would talk to his colleague, and didn't ask to see what he could do to set things straight. I was literally holding a 41.50 euro receipt. Who knows, maybe it was worth 41.50 euro to them to earn the negative review. In the end, I didn't make him the offer to cover the bill and call it even, as it wasn't a matter of money for me and I wanted to pay for the meal that I had and figured this review would be cathartic. Initially hyper excited, initially very impressed, then the house of cards fell apart when this fancy upscale Michelin star restaurant in an international city could not staff with enough English competency leading to misunderstanding and needless unhappiness. Beware.
