Poor: Service (waited 20 minutes before even getting the menus), food (an omelette filled with blocks of cream cheese is considered a "specialty"?! seriously??), drinks (a glass of orange juice filled only 1/3 is considered a full glass, give me a break). Good: The beignets. I will not return again.

Love the fried chicken salad but it's only a lunch and brunch offering. Instead I had the salmon salad and the salmon was delicious but there was about a cup of dressing dousing the lettuce, some quartered cold boiled potatoes and a few Lima beans on the plate. Not so much. My friend had a great vegetarian dumpling dish and we had a plate of corn bread which were bothe delicious. Service was excellent. And the place is cute.

My friends wanted to come here and take advantage of the restaurant week menu, and I haven't had crawfish in almost 20 years so I was more than happy to to oblige. The space is fun, with mardi gras themed decor complete with the infamous beads. I will say it's a tight fit, but that's par for the course as far as restaurants in the area go. Service was friendly and fast. We started with drinks so I got the sazerac, which was strong and straightforward. The limited restaurant week menu had a fair amount of options, so I started with the boudain. They do theirs as croquettes filled with sausage, rice, and crawfish. It was perfectly fried, managed to avoid being greasy, and the creole sauce that came with it really tied everything together. The bread service was jalapeño cheddar monkey bread, and we went overboard and got ourselves some cornbread as well. The monkey bread was delicious, piping hot, and perfectly soft, definitely a must have. I could take or leave the cornbread, I found it a bit lacking in texture but the bacon fat butter helped a lot. For my main I HAD to have the crawfish pie, it was amazing! Perfectly portioned personal pies (try saying that 10 times fast) served in a puff pastry, with a light salad on the side for some freshness. I'd like to try more menu items here someday... but I doubt I'll ever be able to resist that crawfish pie. Dessert offered me a butterscotch bread pudding that I couldn't pass up. It came with a spiced apple butter that was truly a next level addition. It was a terrific finish to an epic meal. My friends tried the fried chicken, and while they enjoyed it and found it juicy they were ultimately jealous of my choices. We had a nice night and left with full stomachs at a price that didn't break the bank. I'd say this was a 4.5 star experience, as close to perfect as you can get in a packed space. I'll have to come back and work my way through the menu in the near future, I know some people who need to try this food! Overall, if your looking for a fancy rendition of creole comfort food you should definitely stop in here. You won't be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyI'm from Minnesota down for business and its restaurant
I'm from Minnesota down for business and its restaurant week in Chicago. I decided on Southern food because I grew up in the south and I was staying nearby at a friend's house. I had no reservation (which I was worried about) but the gracious host was able to sit me at the bar. It was a little after 5pm so the place wasn't to packed initially. I had ordered from the set restaurant week menu. Appetizer Gumbo greens with cornbread pieces, Fried Chicken with a taste of jambalaya, hot Monkey bread and cheesecake. The Greens and Bread were great. The chicken tasted pre cooked and was dry unfortunately and the bar service was so bad I had to wait 20 plus minutes to get my check. I just got the cheesecake to go and couldn't wait any longer because i no offered refills of any of my drinks or water. I even laid the credit card down so he could see if he would glance over. I asked him 3 times forthe check. If I had cash I couldn'teven just walk out becauseI didn't know the cost. He was great with the other 3 couples at the bar laughing, smiling and offering suggestionsand small talk. But his service to me wasn't good. I keep looking for others who came behind the bar but they had other jobs looks like.. The ambiance is excellent fmand intimate.

Came here a few months back to expand our Southern cuisine options. Was here for over two hours before our check came in, an hour after we got our food and waited for the waitresses to come back around. We were blatantly ignored by the staff in favor of larger parties that came after us.On another note, the food was okay but the portion sizes were laughable given the prices. Happily won't be coming back, there's better places worth your time and money.
Be the first to ReplyI had absolutely no intentions on eating lunch out today.
After a morning of running errands and going grocery shopping because all that was in the fridge was baking soda, I just wanted to pick up my lunch and go. I had a taste for Big Jones. So, I drove straight from the grocery store to this restaurant located in Andersonville. I had not been to this place since September 2020 for my pre-birthday dinner, and I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a late Sunday afternoon, and I had some of the best food I had ever tasted. Therefore, I was TOTALLY looking forward to today's lunch!"We don't serve takeout during Brunch." WHAT! Really?!"But I can sit you at the high table if you dine in."Well, I am hungry. It is a nice day, and I just paid for parking. Okay. So, I was seated and my order was taken by the same hostess who greeted me, Aisha J. Aisha was very sweet and knowledgeable. She made me feel welcomed, comfortable, and at home. We even had a great conversation beyond food and drinks. Apparently, it's Mardi Gras time and my Mardi Gras Brunch was RIGHT ON TIME! From the Gumbo, to the Cornbread Skillet, and finally to the Beignets; every morsel melted in my mouth. I had to wash this food down with a special Rum Punch. Big Jones did NOT come to play! What a great place to dine on Southern/Creole inspired dishes in a neighborhood that has a suburban feel in a big city setting! Compliments to the Chef & Owner!A special shout out goes to Hostess Aisha J. and Manager Blake for exceptional customer service and conversation! If you are in the area, visit Big Jones, and tell them that I sent you!
Be the first to ReplyFood was reasonably priced.
The cornbread was phenomenal! Omelets we're amazing as well as the pancakes. The best Bobby flay sandwich was meh.
Be the first to ReplyLet's start with.
..the food was ok. This was my first time here but my friend, who made the reservation, has been here many times. I got there a few mins before my reservation and had to wait till the rest of party arrived...which is fine any fair but the table next to us had no such rule applied to them. But ok. Maybe an oversight. We were seated fast enough. It was a busy Sunday morning and it took over 15 mins for anyone to even come by and take drink orders. Another 15 for our food order and a full hour to actually get our food. And the only time anyone ever came by us was if we flagged someone down (never our actual waitress)...including taking our orders, food, and check. It was busy but others around us managed to get orders taken and food before us. The service was horrible. Considering the food was only ok (pretty cold when we actually got it), don't think I'll be coming back. Kind of sad because I had heard such good things and expected as much.
Be the first to ReplyI came in for dinner on a Saturday night.
I would recommend making a reservation for weekend dinner service as it was quite busy. We started with the fried green tomatoes, which were light and crisp. I really enjoyed the vibrant piccalilli sauce that was at the bottom of the plate. We also ordered the deviled crawfish cakes. A perfect bite consisted of crawfish cake, remoulade, and topped with the corn relish. For my entrée I ordered the duck and oyster etouffee. The roux had lots of depth and flavor, which soaked into the steamed dumplings in a good way. My favorite part of this dish were the large oysters that were extremely tender. It's a filling dish and doesn't pack much heat/spicy, which I prefer. Overall, the service and food were outstanding.

Let me preface that we went during restaurant week, which is never an ideal time to gauge a restaurant for its food or service. We were a party of eight and they tucked us into an alcove at the back of the restaurant. While it was nice to have our own space, it was not as lively or inviting. We all ordered off of the restaurant week menu. The Cochon de lait first course was definitely the best of the 3 choices. For the second course options the étouffée and the chicken fell short of the mark: the chicken was lukewarm and the étouffée was very soupy. The andouille sausage and alligator entrée was a good size and quite spicy. One of the dessert choices was a beignet style dessert, which was dry and hard. We ordered two bottles of wine when our entrées came out and unfortunately they never materialized. On a bright note, our server Bara was lovely.
Be the first to ReplyReally really bad.
I mean really. I never give a bad review but this one must be done. In a time when I actually expect service to be bad this service was so bad that it stood out. I almost felt like we were bothering them by coming in. We just wanted to try an entree before having a large part there and thank goodness we tried it before we dragged 6 people there. We had the blackened catfish which was not blackened nor seasoned. It was in a weirdly sweet coconut sauce and some pudding like rice. Not for me thanks. I'm sure somebody likes it but the high price and the annoyed service prompted this negative review. But they do get two stars for the decor.

I now realize why they call the big jones burger the big jones burger , I did not expect the quality and proportionate size of the angus beef patty to fill me up and leave me delighted for hours to come , I honestly cannot fathom the quality of the beef patty , recommended to try at least once especially if you visit Andersonville often , good place to dine , tender lighting and diverse menu , will definitely check out again

She knows I love brunch food with incredible flavors. That's what I got with the #beatbobbyflay sandwich. The entire family loved the meal and we had the back patio to ourselves. Best part staff was super friendly and attentive Make sure someone at the table gets the mushroom and leek omelette!

O.M.G. So glad my friend and I stumbled upon Big Jones at our recent trip to Chicago!! We had the best meal! The gumbo is extremely delicious, the collard greens were stupidly good, the fried chicken salad was awesome, and the tangerine beer was delish. I wish I could go back to try more from the menu, including a dessert. The servers and others in the restaurant were friendly, and the atmosphere was nice and comfortable. Sitting by the window while eating this delicious food was a nice treat. This will be a must-go place the next time I'm visiting Andersonville.

Tasty southern comfort food. Fried chicken lived up to hype!
Be the first to ReplyI had the best lunch yesterday at Big Jones.
Charred andouille poor boy and then had the strawberry shortcake. Note to self, share the shortcake next time, plenty for two. Relaxing atmosphere, great service and I'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyWhat an unexpected gem.
I would have passed right by this place as when I think "southern" food the connotation leads me elsewhere but I repeat DO NOT miss Big Jones. Their southern charm is imminent throughout the homey feeling decor and table settings and the menu ranges from southern staples like made-to-order corn bread and pimento cheese to twists on flavors like a Thai inspired blackened catfish with grits. It was one of the best meals I have had in a long time.

Everything here was absolutely delicious! My friend had the fried chicken and I had the special - soft shell crab pasta. Every bite was heaven. The staff were all delightful. Definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyExpected much much better.
Decided to have dinner here with my partner after the Andersonville wine walk. The turnips were bland and not washed properly, crunched on some sand or dirt after a couple of forkfuls. Waited 45 minutes for our entrees. Crawfish etoufee was barely warm and underwhelming flavor. Tagliatelle with mushrooms was also barely warm and lacked flavor. i have eaten here many times before, brought my partner and friends for brunch and dinner. Unfortunately due to the disappointing food experience on the top of the clueless host and servers we won't be coming back anytime soon.
Be the first to ReplyCame for brunch earlier today.
Got a Bloody Mary. Spicy not too spicy, don't know many places will put pickled Okra in the garnish. Got a side of grits. They were decent. Believe they came from some kind of small batch mill or something. Also went with Fried Chicken. Very satisfied in the spices/ seasonings they used as well as the portion size. Couldn't even finish it all during brunch. Yay leftovers. Also went with a Last Word cocktail. The biscuits were unique with what what was either honey in the biscuits or butter. This was a great meal!!

Great spicy gumbo, melt in your mouth biscuits with homemade butter and fresh preserves and amazing beignets with orange sauce. The service was as good as the food. And don't forget to have a cup of coffee. Some of the best coffee in the city. Highly recommend.

Came here for restaurant week and the experience was terrible. :( The food was average at best and undercooked at worst. We got dry, bland cornbread that might have been okay if the gumbo came out timely so it could be dipped but there was an hour-long gap between bread and apps. Gumbo was the best dish of the night and it still lacked flavor. Crawfish risotto was bland and had a fishy taste. Mains came another hour later. At this point we are 2 hours in which is crazy, we sat down at 5 in a mostly empty restaurant. The morel pasta was an atrocity, no other way to say it. The mushrooms were mush, the pasta was literally hard, it was listed on menu as pappardelle but fettuccini was served. The etoufee had similar flavor profile to the gumbo but was served with hard rice?! At this point we were over it and left before dessert. We asked our server when that would be coming and she looked flabbergasted and said uhm, I have no idea. She was terrible and had zero customer service skills. Anyway, drove a half hour to get here after hearing great things and was so disappointed. This meal cost me $140 with mandatory tip. No tip was deserved and I was shocked that they would serve such basic elements (rice, pasta) undercooked.

Dayna was an awesome server with aGreat personality! Food was really tasty, however the portions were tiny.... Desert was delicious! Atmosphere was fun. Will be back to try this placeWhen it's not restaurant week. I'll order regular dinners!

My guess is due to COVID but life has been pretty normal for about a year here in Chicago so I am curious what it's for.Either way, food was 10/10, service was 10/10, got sat immediately at 12pm on a Sunday. Tip: you don't need a reservation for the bar seating!
