Buddakan Philadelphia Reviews from The Last Year
Went there while in Philly on business The ambience, is
Went there while in Philly on business The ambience, is dark and gives a club vibe, place is usually packed even on weekdays we had to make a reservation for dinner. Tables are placed to close, they have two bars spread out into two floors. Bar seating is first come first served but really difficult to find one. The service is very slow, the main course came after 20 minutes after we finished eating appetizers. Place is too loud to have a conversation, as the next table is too close to you there is no privacy. Food is good, but the table has no condiments or they do bring chili sauce or any sauce with the food. Tried the edamame dumplings they would have tasted better if they have a chili oil or chili paste that is usually available when eating dumplings at other places. I tried the Korean beef fried rice, the taste is very good but the kimchi had a weird smell, I know usually kimchi smells weird but this is not that weird. Quantity is good, the fried egg is made perfectly. I had to give it lower stars for the close tables, loud environment, and providing food without condiments on the table, and the price.
I went here for my birthday dinner.
The service was great! The food was great as well. Very nice restaurant with lots of things to look at. We had an issue this night and management took no time to handle the issue and take care of us. I would return off just that because the customer service was A1! The lamb chops were my favorite. I did not get to try the lobster fried rice but someone in my party did and they loved it! The donuts were definitely a hit!
Food was definitely good but I was left a little
Food was definitely good but I was left a little disappointed. I expected more for the price and upscale setting. Flavors were just average, I was hoping to be more impressed. Service was phenomenal though. Staff were super attentive and helpful with the menu.
Phenomenal restaurant
This restaurant is outstanding. The food is wonderful and the service is so great. I was a business Traveler eating alone and sat at the bar. Gabby, one of the bartenders, was just amazing. Even though she was busy she spent time to chat with me. Means a lot as a business Traveler alone. Thank you gabby!
First of all, shout-out to the valet guy up front for
First of all, shout-out to the valet guy up front for making sure we parked behind the pole up front (we were just slightly past the pole), because apparently the PPA lady does come by and check, and she's real generous with the tickets. Helpful tips: 1. Dress up. I'd recommend cocktail attire, smart casual at minimum. If you're wearing heels, I'd definitely recommend bringing a pair of comfy shoes to slip into if and when your feet hurt. Heels for the pic, comfy shoes for the walk. 2. The food here is served family-style. Dishes are placed in the middle and meant to be served amongst your party. 3. The noise level is moderate-loud. The bar might be a better spot if you're trying to have a conversation. Anyways, to the meat of the review... For a party of 6, we ordered: Appetizers 2 orders of shrimp bao buns (4/5 stars) 2 orders of pork belly baos (3/5 stars) 1 order of fire roasted edamame (5/5 stars) 3 orders of sashimi (3/5 stars) 2 orders of dim sum samplers (2/5 stars) 1 order of tea smoked spare ribs (4/5 stars) Entrees: 2 orders of lobster fried rice (2/5 stars) 1 order of pan-seared sea bass (3/5 stars) 1 order of crispy whole fish (4/5 stars) 1 order of grilled lamb chops (5/5 stars) 1 order of curried cauliflower (4/5 stars) + drinks (I got the Rising Sun--non-alcoholic--and it was really good. 5/5) We ordered two or three orders of our appetizers so we could place a dish on either side of our table. I'd say this was the perfect amount of food for us. We did have some extra fried rice left over that we took home. Could definitely have ordered one less lobster fried rice if we wanted. Overall Review: This place is good. The flavor profiles for some of the dishes were quite radical. I've never had edamame dressed the way that they served it. It was zesty, fiery, and salty in all the right ways. I felt similarly about the cauliflower. I also enjoyed the shrimp baos, but it reminded me a lot of the shrimp from the walnut shrimp dishes at your classic Chinese restaurant (you'd get more there for the same price). The one thing I was quite let down by was the lobster fried rice. It was the one dish I was really looking forward to on the menu, but it just didn't hit. I was expecting to be knocked off my feet by flavor, like the appetizers, but it fell flat. Not sure if the crab fried rice is similar, but I'd avoid the fried rice altogether. Most of the other entrees were quite good. Overall, a pleasant dinner experience, and a great choice if you have something to celebrate, or are feeling fancy. :)
Took a quick getaway to this NY fave located in
Took a quick getaway to this NY fave located in Philadelphia. Just like their NY counterpart it was a hot spot for upscale Asian fusion dishes. Customer service was top tier and the food left us too stuffed to walk! A must visit everytime we go to Philly!
Great food, service Nd ambiance.
Our favorite dumpling sampler and Chinese eggplant. Try the foxhole Sake!
Out of this world dining experience.
The dinner was top notch, the atmosphere was gorgeous. Service was great too. I will be back next time in Philly.
The food the service and the ambience were top notch!!
The food the service and the ambience were top notch!! Great experience here!!! Totally worth it !! I'd give them ten stars if it were an option!
Favorite restaurant of all time.
Great food and service! If you go here you definitely need to try the edamame dumplings. They remain on my list of must-gets every time I go here. The atmosphere is great for a nice family dinner or celebration. Nothing bad to say about this place.
I've been here a couple of times and have enjoyed coming
I've been here a couple of times and have enjoyed coming with a group. The place is gorgeous and the drinks are superb. As for the food... The old hits could have been executed better. Edamame dumplings were room temperature and slightly chilled in the middle. Tuna pizza was an interesting idea but I'm not sure it was executed to my liking. Crispy rice pancake was dense and chewy. Lacked the crispness you'd expect but the tuna on top was fine. General Tso's dumpling was sweet and lackluster but did come out piping hot. Pad Thai was fine and forgettable at this level of dining. Miso black cod was overcooked but had the taste I remember.
Great dining & service in Center City
We celebrated our son’s birthday here last weekend. The food was good and the service was impeccable. Loved the calamari salad. We asked for a candle to put on top of my son’s desert. They gave us a sparkling one like fireworks. Very nice touch!
Atmosphere was quite different than I expected! Fun group
Atmosphere was quite different than I expected! Fun group and I was definitely underdressed :) Don't quite remember everything but Prix Fixe was delicious but not the most food. The entrees were the highlight for sure.
Was dying to come to Buddakan for my birthday this year.
We had a reservation and had to wait 20 minutes for our table. Other than that service was great. Our server was very attentive and lovely. The food was very disappointing though. Everything was either super salty or bland. We had the edamame dumplings and it was super over cooked and it fell apart on my chopsticks because it was so over cooked and was mush. It was not good. The shrimp dumpling had a weird texture and the flavor wasn't great. Maybe growing up with Asian cuisine my expectations are a little high but for the price point it's not worth it. The restaurant is gorgeous and upscale for sure just hoped the food would also match the ambiance.
I tripped once and they banned me from drinking alcohol it
I tripped once and they banned me from drinking alcohol it was dark and steak was booty say I was leaving a review
I went here after 7 years and it is still SOOOO
I went here after 7 years and it is still SOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!! And the portion size for the entrees was amazing!!! Loved the rocky shrimp bao buns and the kimchee fried rice (replaced beef with shrimp)... and loved the yuzu lemonade (virgin).... Even the dim sums and the cashew chicken were really good!!!!
Not cheap but worth it!
My second visit to Buddakan. It’s quite noisy/buzzy venue so not the place to go for a quiet and intimate chat. Neverless, a nice feel to the place. Great food, especially the fried whole fish, baked choi fried veg and dim sum starters.
Best restaurant ever....really
The food here was probably the best I have ever had and that is not overstating it. Price is not too bad and everything from the ceasar salad to entree were just so good. Friendly service as well!
Meal for the senses
This place is great for a special occasion or any time for that matter. There were 4 of us and each one of us loved our meal. What a deal for restaurant week. They do not skimp on the food. The food was spot on. Every course was better than the last. One of the best meals I've had! Love this place!
Good to visit one time
The food was good but not 5 stars (especially for the price). The service was good. The wait staff was very attentive but seemed inexperienced. The drinks were expensive and watered down. The atmosphere was acceptable but slightly outdated.
Finest Asian Fusion Cuisine
A fabulous location with great asian fusion cuisine. It’s a large restaurant with dimmed lights and loud music. Staff is very very friendly and helpful. We suggest the Edamame Dumplings or the chicken dumplings. The fried rice with crab and egg as well as the curry cauliflower were cooked to perfection . To top it off we had the Tempel Dessert!
Just get local Chinese instead....
Before we went to Buddakan for dinner, I was joking to my wife..."Oh great, $200 for Chinese food"... and boy did I hit the nail on the head. The food was utterly average to below average at every turn. The biggest lowlight was the crab fried rice which literally had no flavor at all. Pork buns were the highlight at a 6/10. Seschuan pork dumplings taster like a broccoli floret somehow. Cashew chicken was very salty and about as good as a food court meal. Calamari salad was light on calamari. Crab egg rolls had a weird taste. Lobster egg rolls seemingIy had celery in it which completely overpowered the dish with a earthy rooty flavor that drowned out any alleged lobster inside. I can't believe the place survives with food this bad. On a high note, our server was AMAZING. She paced the tapas-style meal really well and was very attentive with drink refills and clearing plates etc.
The Buddakan Experience in Philly. Love Asian Fusion and know the Buddakan brand, however, the Philly location was a disappoint
Love the atmosphere but the food was overly salty. The staff seem to be very overwhelmed. Hair was found in one of the entrees. We didn't stay for dessert.
The edamame dumplings are heavenly
We love the NYC location and decided to give this one a try, and it definitely lives up to the reputation. It was super busy when we got here, so even though we had a reservation, we still had a 10-minute wait for our table, which wasn't a problem. We were shown to a comfortable table and presented with menus that reflect the same delicious foods as the NYC location. We shared the edamame dumplings (the best thing on the menu, IMO), the mushroom potstickers, Chinese eggplant, the sea bass, and a salad, and everything was superb. The edamame dumplings are really flavorful and melt in the mouth, and everything else was equally good. Our waiter (Kyle?) was very friendly and suggested an order in which to bring out the various dishes. It's a bit loud in here, but we could still hear each other talk. Truly a marvelous dining experience.
Honest Review
The Korean beef fried rice was EVERYTHING! It was sooooo good. I give it a 10 out of 10, very delicious. Next the Sea Bass was absolutely amazing. Cooked and flavored to perfection. Next the pork belly bao buns were okay, nothing to write home about. I give the bao buns a 5 out of 10. The Dim Sum Sampler was also okay. But I will admit that I am biased because I don’t like dumplings. I give it a 3 while my husband said the dumplings were a 7. The Service was good. The waitresses know the menu like the back of their hand. I was very impressed. Will be back!

Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
