There has been a lot of buzz about Callie, so I finally had to check it out. It was quite good but I wouldn't call it incredible, and I'm going to tell you why. I would honestly give it 3 1/2 stars, but Yelp does not allow halves so I rounded up- a three star review would've been unfair. One of my girlfriends, and I decided to do a dinner out for our birthdays. We went for the Mediterranean feast, because the five course chef tasting menu sounded like so much fun. We also split one of the wine pairing flights... Not to be cheap, but because we can't drink that much in the evening anymore and sleep at night. The first two courses, the trio of dips, and the Japanese Kanpachi were fantastic. We both agreed that the Kanpachi was the best dish of the night. The main course, which was the halibut, was visually appealing, but unremarkable in taste and texture. A piece of halibut was sliced, so thin, that it seemed to be overcooked, and the flavor of the fish was overwhelmed by the toppings. The beet and citrus salad that came with was fabulous, but the two dishes did not make sense together. Our server recommended the rice pudding for dessert and we also each got a 2.5 oz glass of a dessert wine that he told us was the best desert wine he had ever tasted. I understand that enjoying wine is truly a matter of taste, so I'm not saying that it wasn't good I'm just saying I didn't find it to be spectacular personally, or a particularly good pairing for the rice pudding. Overall, the preselected flight of wines did go very well with the meal and we appreciated being able to split them so we could enjoy it but not feel poorly later. I thought the restaurant was actually nicer inside than the pictures of it were that I saw. I don't quite understand the cafeteria like aesthetic that a lot of these nice restaurants seem to be going for these days. The pictures on their website did not do the decor justice, and the patterned tile was very pretty. The lighting seemed to be very stark, however. I think they were going for moody, but it missed the mark. Our server was friendly and engaging, and we particularly enjoyed chatting with the server assistant. My biggest issue however, with the experience was that each of us ended up paying about $150 each for the meal. I don't mind paying for quality cuisine but two hours later I was hungry and I was warming up chicken nuggets in my toaster oven. It just wasn't enough food for me.
Be the first to ReplyFirst, the food was really good here, so don't get me wrong.
The issue is just the portion sizes. Shareable family style means that it is enough to share, at least I thought so. Our table of 4 was having to take one little portion of an entree plate that came out and divide it up. It's really embarassing how little food is provided. With the labnehs we had to ADD a pita and got ONE for 4 people. With the Uni Toast we had to get 2 orders for $58 for one tiny little piece of bread each.... (It was good as I said) The pasta dish was excellent, but for 2x the price and 1/4 of the portion size of other resturants, it just sours the whole experience. Oh and of course the entrees are ala carte so you don't even get a few veggies with it which cost nothing. Finally, the server explained everything so fast and when we were talking that a lot is missed. When the bill finally came there is 20% (+4%) gratuity already included which I missed. So I had to call back later and have that adjusted. Our service was not 20% worth, and I especially don't like when it is added by default avoiding letting the customer determine the quality of service. I suppose this experience is good to remember to be vigilent when choosing resturants and look out for blantant rip-offs, no matter the quality of the taste. Most expensive resturant bill I've had here and I left feeling hungry and ate some mac and cheese when I got home.

Took my boyfriend here for his birthday a couple weeks ago! We tried the course dinner, very accommodating. We really enjoyed the service, the staff was so attentive and kind. We had a reservation, recommend making one unless you want to sit in the bar. I loved the combinations for the drinks, the ingredients were so fresh!

Some of the unique items here that I would get over and over again: * Aleppo Chicken: with wonderful sweet and spicy glaze * Duck Breast: extremely crispy and crunchy skin Some of the solid dishes that are just as good elsewhere: * Hummus with Spicy Zhoug * Mediterranean Octopus * Japanese Kanpachi * Crunchy Eqyptian Carrots A dish that I thought was weird (1 star off): * Spaghetti with Lemon and Uni: I have had pasta plus uni and the combination is quite good, however, adding the lemon does not work. The pasta was just weirdly sour. The food here is Mediterranean, but encompasses a little bit of Japanese flavors as well. Both the food and drinks are great. The restaurant is modern and spacious, making me feel way cooler than I actually am when I am here.
Be the first to ReplySo good! Food, service and environment.
I definitely had a great experience at this restaurant. The lamb was my favorite dish, so flavorful and perfectly cooked.
Be the first to ReplyDinner was very good- fish was excellent, service was good.
Vibe was casual. Only 1 star off for a lack of service when it comes to not offering cake service if you want to have a cake brought in for special occasion. Charge us to let is bring a type of cake you don't offer! ;-) I respect a right to make that decision but it comes off as a lower caliber service for the tier of restaurant Callie is, so that was the only thing that surprised us- maybe it's common in the area idk. I read in other reviews the attitude is generally not that accommodating but our experience was okay and friendly.

Callie was a standout dining experience in San Diego - The Truffle Pasta was exceptional, especially with the added black truffle flakes on top. The Hamachi Carpaccio and Hummus/Babaganoush with pita was a perfect light second course of the meal. A slight letdown comes with the dessert--Lemon Curd with angel hair sugar flakes. The restaurant's ambiance is elegant, blending contemporary and timeless elements. Efficient, attentive service adds to the overall positive experience. Callie stands out as a go-to spot for those seeking a straightforward, enjoyable five-course meal with a pleasing atmosphere.

In downtown and amazing restaurant parking was very difficult. We finally found the parking in the building. Very nice updated. We have reservations attended right away. The ambience and energy of the place was amazing. Lots of specialty dishes. We ordered couple of drinks with tequila. One of them was the beat tequila batata and the lamb chops where amazing we also had the Turkish rice pudding, which was really delicious was a little overpriced but I'm glad that we had the experience
Be the first to ReplySpent my birthday at Callie and was welcomed to a birthday
Spent my birthday at Callie and was welcomed to a birthday card which was a really nice touch from the restaurant. The interior is really spacious and has both a relaxed and chique aesthetic that I really appreciated. Our server was amazing throughout the evening and he helped us understand how their "Mediterranean Feast" works since we were eyeing that from the beginning. It's basically the best way for you to try a sampling of their menu via a 5-course meal. The waiter informed us of what each dish was going to be a part of the feast (I'm not sure if the selection is the same for every night - I assume not) but in any case we opted for the Mediterranean Feast which for $75/person is a pretty good value. For the starter, we got the Hummus, Babaghanoush, Avocado Labneh, and Pita Bread. The bread was really soft and I thought the babaghanoush was the best dip out of the 3. It was the most flavorful and I really enjoyed it. The hummus was also very good and the avocado labneh had a nice citric touch. The labneh tasteh also gave me a little "green juice" vibes. The other starter was the Japanese Kanpachi which was executed perfectly. The green "hot sauce" was delicious and the fish was really soft and was cut the perfect thickness. The first main course was the Wild Nettle Scarpinocc which had a really good mushroom flavor and delicious cheese. Although a really tasty pasta, it wasn't a big standout dish overall. The second main course was the Aleppo Chicken which was packed with flavor! The meat was cooked perfectly. Super tender, juicy, and moist which is really impressive considering the thickness of some parts of the chicken. This was served with the Crunchy Egyptian Carrots as the side. The carrots were good but flavor-wise nothing too special. I do think that because they came out together, eating the chicken and carrots together was too much acidity. There needed to be a neutral component to help balance out this portion of the meal. Whether that be bread, rice, etc that would have really helped neutralize some of the strong flavors and allowed me to keep eating more. The dessert of the feast was the Meyer Lemon Pavlova which was really fun to eat. The pavlova provided a nice bite texture to the soft meyer lemon pudding. Also there was some floss-like looking accompaniment to the dish that I can only best describe as a fancy version of cotton candy where it melts in your melt. Separately we also ordered the Turkish Rice Pudding. My gf really liked this but to me it was just alright. It had a nice brulee top to it which was different but the flavor was nothing exceptional. I really enjoyed my meal at Callie and would happily return for a special occasion. I love the Mediterranean Feast option since it allows your group to try a variety of dishes without having to spend full price on each dish and if I were to return, I'd opt to do the feast again but with different dishes offered.

Snagged a reservation at Callie for my partners Birthday and we arrive to a birthday card in the table! The service here is amazing, never an empty water glass, very knowledgeable of the menu, and polite. We came here specifically for their Mediterranean Feast and that is exactly what we ordered. It is 5 courses for two or more people from dips to dessert. Started with a trio of dips: hummus, babaghanoush, and the avocado labneh. All three were lovely. Avocado was so vibrant and citrusy and babaghanoush had a great depth in flavor. Japanese kanpachi: so smooth with a great brightness from the sauce. I could add that sauce to everything. Wild Nettle Scarpinocc: subtle in flavor, could have had more of a punch, but still amazing. Just because it wasn't my favorite of the entire dinner doesn't mean it wasn't delicious. Crunchy Egyptian carrots: wow, never thought I'd love carrots this much. They are almost pickled but still had a big crunch. I really enjoyed these carrots. Aleppo chicken: perfectly crispy, perfectly juicy. Lemon pavlova: so interesting! The custard with the meringue with the floss. So many textures. I loved it. I did order an extra rice pudding on top of the feast because it was staring at me from the menu. It did not disappoint. Not too sweet, full of texture from the rice to the pistachios to the bruleed top. This dinner was one for the books and I definitely recommend the feast for an easy experience.

Our server was Alex. Very nice.

Ambience: A+ despite being close to other diners with a lot of people, I could still have a conversation. Cool vibe.Service: A+. Friendly greeting at hostess table. Immediate introduction to Hailey who told us Alex would be our server. Super friendly.Food: started with the hummus and it was amazing. Olive oil was off the charts. Loved how we could mix in the spiciness from Jalapeño sauce as needed. Next was the morel special with cabbage. Morels overpowered by the dish but it was new and different.Lamb was excellent but wasn't star of the dish. Cooked to perfection. Definitely recommend, but don't expect to taste the amazing lamb.

I've been here two times, visiting from NY, and this place I wish I could scoop up and transport it over to NYC as I would come here on the regular as this place is booming with flavor! Each dish is a masterclass in an invitation for the eyes while being a cataclysmic shift for your taste buds. Every single plate takes its own form so you don't need to fear that things start to feel monolithic dish to dish. You really get to celebrate each individual plate for what it is, and boy, they are all #tastyAF! Their duck will knock your socks off. Our first visit we actually ordered two portions because after eating one, we needed to revisit it again it was so good. One thing to note, it's not always on the menu, so you should call and ask if you are wanting duck. My second visit it wasn't on, I was slightly disappointed when I heard, but then I ate my disappointment once I had all the other masterful dishes. Don't sleep on the Lemon Saffon pasta - holy hell this is a game changing pasta plate. The Spring Asparagus and Iberico ham needs a seat at your table. You can never go wrong with their Octopus, cooked to perfection, and those Egyptian Carrots with creamy cashew sauce are a fan favorite. Tracy their sommelier does such a superb listening to what you like, considering the food in play, and then making an educated recommendation that you're sure to enjoy. Really happy with our choices each time thanks to her! Sprint your way here and get a table. It's not to be missed.

I finally made it! A bit difficult to get in this place since they're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but came in on a Friday and sat at the bar where no reservation is needed. Everyone who works here is very professional and so nice! I finally had a chance to try that coveted Aleppo Chicken and it was exotically delicious! Pretty pricey... but I was celebrating a personal accomplishment and will definitely be back for another special occasion.

Be the first to ReplyWe walked in, we're greeted promptly.
It was a busy Saturday night and we got lucky and were seated promptly. They have a community table that was big enough to feel secluded away from the others sitting at it. Our server Jordan was knowledgeable, kind, had a great sense of humor. We started babaghanoush appetizer. It was the perfect amount of Smokey to citrus ratio. The fluffy warm pita was perfect. My wife and I shared the lamp chops, hangar steak and Egyptian carrots. We were impressed with the flavor profiles on each dish. We had the Tempranillo red wine with dinner and ended with dessert. I would recommend
Be the first to ReplyI had an AMAZING experience.
As a mom, I don't get out as often as I'd like and try to make my nights out well worth it. Callie did not disappoint. We opted to go the 'choose my courses' route and I sincerely enjoyed every plate and entree that was prepared for us. I would love to come back and select the wine pairings as well next time! -it's good to include that 20% tip is already included on your check, but I was very thankful that the service was amazing!

Incredible food and service, Callie is a restaurant I'll be returning to multiple times after going on my initial outing. The Lamb Chops were super smokey and flavorful and paired well with a Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles. The side dish of carrots was an explosion of citrus flavors in your mouth with each bite and completely unexpected. Its easy to say each meal ordered was unforgettable and requires a return trip to reorder because they were delicious.

We were seated immediately, even though we didn't have a reservation. We ate all the vegetarian options and would recommend all of them. Great service and delicious drinks too.
Be the first to ReplyI went to a new restaurant called Callie last night.
The food was amazing. I've been to a lot of nice restaurants and this is the best chicken I've ever had in my life. Nice twist on the carrots and babaganoush also. Halie was an amazing server and was super responsive to our orders/drinks.

Love love love this place! My girlfriends took me here to celebrate my birthday and baby sprinkle and it was just perfect. The food and service was excellent! Everything that we ordered was phenomenol. A few of my favorites was the chicken, octopus, baba ghanoush, and patatas bravas. The also enjoyed my mocktail while my girlfriends enjoyed their cocktails.I definitely would like to come back and try other things on the menu.

If you're considering dining here, make a reso NOW! My bf booked a reservation for 2 at peak dinner time about two months out. With almost every bite of everything we ordered, we were in awe. This restaurant is definitely more quality over quantity so depending on your budget you may not leave full. Here's everything we ordered:- opah toro toast (10/10 i could eat 20 of these! Fish was fatty and flavorful, the toast complimented it very well)- Japanese kanpachi (9/10 i had never had kanpachi before and was pleasantly surprised! Super fresh, the "hot sauce" was soooo good)- lemon saffron linguine with uni (10/10 beautifully balanced, perfect amount of lemon & saffron)- dry aged duck breast (8.5/10 I'm personally not a huge duck fan, i thought this was a little dry)- chilled brocollini (9/10 tasty & good contrast with the warm entrees we were eating, loved the jalapeños on this for a kick)- Turkish rice pudding (9/10 love the caramelized crisp, great way to end the meal, not too heavy) Parking is a little hard to find but it's underground the restaurant (entrance is on 11th). Not to get confused with the padres parkade across the street. Service was fantastic and ambiance felt very upscale. Most of the people around us looking like middle-aged and up, lots of business people (maybe there was a convention that night). A pretty pricey date night but I definitely want to come back and try their other items since a lot of it looks seasonal!
Be the first to ReplyGreat ambience, very professional service and really great
Great ambience, very professional service and really great food, but I'm not a fan of $17-19 mezza plates, the table had 4 different entrees which were great, creative and worth the prices. We had a couple house dry aged duck dishes which were superb but disappointed to see the duck is no longer on the menu any longer and that was our main reason for going to Callie.
Be the first to ReplyThis was an outstanding experience.
Service was impeccable, presentation was elegant, and flavors were creative and delicious. We had a couple specials, the toro toast with black truffle and the spot prawns, as well as the avocado labnah with vegetable crudité, the kanpachi, the broccolini and the lamb. For dessert we tried the warm chocolate chip tahini cookie with gelato. Every dish was excellent, and I can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu!
Be the first to ReplyThis is the best restaurant in San Diego currently.
Congrats! You found it. It's honestly up there with the best restaurants in California right now. The menu is Spain meets Israeli with Cal-Med-Mex as the undertone. They utilize the best, highest quality local ingredients, with amazingly balanced flavors coming from simple preparations. The chef that turned this idea into such a successful reality deserves a James Beard award. The staff is friendly yet efficient, the vibes are sexy, and the food is incredible. What are you waiting for? Walk in at 5 and grab a spot at the bar!
