Sometimes (rarely) an overall TA score is just completely out of kilter and doesn’t reflect reality
A foodie friend suggested we meet here, saying that it’s amazing. I looked it up and saw an overall score of 3.5. Which frankly you might settle for in a provincial town where there are few or no alternatives - not in London. Anyway I trust my friend and we proceeded to have the most brilliant dinner- and I eat out most days. The most delicious re-invented vitello tonnato with pork instead of veal; meatballs; a crab custard. As a main course we shared a rabbit and ham pie with a melting suet pastry. For pudding, rum baba and for me a campari and blood orange sorbet. Abundant good wine and drinks- scarcely over £60 a head. In central London, in a slightly swisher setting, you’d pay double that and leave feeling happy. So what’s the problem with the scores? Unlike Continentals, Brits have an expectation that innovative food should be served in a poncy setting, not a saw dust pub. And we found the service friendly and helpful, but it’s not smarmy or ingratiating. I can see that if you got on the wrong side of the staff you might get a bit of a Sarf London tongue-lashing. The pub also serves Sunday roasts and maybe the model breaks down there - I’ve never been so can’t say. But overall the stars are so out of alignment with the reality this is almost a situation where you’d ask TA to send in anonymous inspectors to give their verdict…
Be the first to ReplyAvoid. Avoid. Avoid.
The staff are nice, but there is an angry drunk lady in charge, who is the rudest person I have ever met. I’ve never experienced anything like it. The food is poncy and overpriced and she thinks she’s running a Michelin starred restaurant, but it’s just a sticky and smelly pub. Won’t be revisiting. Ever. Even if you paid me. Beer also super expensive. Not good.
Be the first to ReplyTruly excellent
The Canton Arms is, I think, what a lot of "gastropubs" aspire to be. The food is magnificent, flavourful and deeply satisfying with generous portions and incredible value. As a restaurant, it certainly has a very lively atmosphere but not in a boisterous way, and seems to strike a pleasant balance between being a genuine local for the neighbourhood and a destination for people in the know. Cocktails are classic and unfussy, and again are excellent value when comparing it to other nearby places.
Be the first to ReplyLovely Saturday lunch
We all ate something different and every plate was clean - quite a quirky place but the food exceeded my expectations.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent meal, friendly staff, great ambience
We are surprised to see the poor reviews, we had a memorable meal at the Canton Arms. This place was recommended by our Airbnb host and we're happy she did. Everything was delicious, the portions were generous and the food prepared to perfection. We had cullen skink and smoked salmon waldorf for appetizers, and lamb shank and a squash/gnocchi vegetarian dish for main courses. Everything was delicious and hearty, truly enjoyable to the last bite. Unfortunately we had no more space for desserts. The staff was friendly and attentive despite being very busy, they took time to check in on us and make sure we enjoyed our food. This was a great first-time experience in a London pub, we recommend it highly..
Be the first to ReplyA culture of poor customer service
The Canton Arms serves lovely food, however I am sad to say the staff are rude, unwelcoming and inattentive. I have persevered with this pub, given it’s my local but it’s SO bizarre that there seems to be a culture of terrible customer service. You feel like such an inconvenience - especially to the older members of staff and it’s odd that the younger members of staff are the same. Do they encourage such service? I’d love to be able to bring friends here, but to be honest, I wouldn’t risk the embarrassment incase they were rude to us. It’s interesting that there are many reviews saying the same.
Be the first to ReplyDecent boozer but avoid the food!
Local boozer - looks pretty decent with a nice patio. Gastropub? Laughably no! Had to check to see if gastropub meant pub with food. No. According to Google: Definition of gastropub: a pub, bar, or tavern that offers meals of HIGH quality. Lowest quality food I’ve had in years, quite honestly as long as I can remember. Makes airplane cattle class food look Michelin star worthy. Seems this place might have been decent at one point but not now. AVOID the food!
Be the first to ReplyDistinctly uninspiring
I chose to take my daughter here when I saw its high gastropub rating. We were very disappointed.Perhaps coming for a midweek lunch was a mistake as this quite large space was nearly empty.
The lunch menu was not large and includes one dish,a shoulder of lamb, for 4 or 5.
I had duck and my daughter has a mushroom stroganoff. Both portions were on the small side and my chips failed to materialise as I was informed that the fryer was not working.
Both dishes were adequate but pricey for what they were but far from justifying the pubs exhalted reputation
Great roast, limit on bread
We had the short rib on the Sunday roast. Roast was fantastic. The bread was amazing, but we were disappointed to find out that we couldn’t order any more on top of the first order as they had to ration for the rest of the day. Service was timely, but please make more bread!
Be the first to ReplyRude service
I was very excited to try this pub as it is my new local. Unfortunately the staff were very rude to me and my friends on separate occasions.
We will not be going back.
Misplaced attitude
So I was quite excited about eating here. Heard the food was good. Slow cooked lamb etc…..
We booked for 6pm. We were told that if we did not sit down (we were initially in the bar area) that we would lose our spot. We dutifully sat.
And we sat………..
Where did they get their servers from? There was a general ‘air’ of they were doing us and everyone else in the restaurant a favour for merely exisiting. We waited for 55 minutes for our food, pretty much like everyone else in the restaurant.
We ordered the lamb, a sharing dish, yes. But we were HUNGRY. The ‘server’ interrogated us as ‘allegedly’ the chef will only serve to a party of 4, not 3. Have no idea where she was going with this. Eventually she reluctantly accepted our order, complete with snarl and disdain. ‘Her name was Anna’ avoid…..
An age later, our food came. The lamb was superbly cooked. The potato whatever that came with it. So salty I couldn’t eat it. Whatever, I was mostly there for the protein…
Overall,, the food was okaaaay. Probably could have been better if the service just wasn’t so…….rude? Or quite sure what the motivation is behind this as this place could really be amazing, but the people that work there need some training in their overall people skills…
Mid meal (given that we waited 55 mins for the ‘experience’) our bill was slapped down on the table….perhaps we didn’t take the hint, so Anna came along telling us to Move along as the next party have arrived….
Anna then saw the card was already on top of the receipt. Managed a grimace…I suspect for the service charge. Ran our card through the machine and I guess that was it.
We won’t be back. And I suggest others look elsewhere. Whilst there are elements of the menu that are great. The service really lets it down….
The dogs were cute though.
Way too salty food and rude service
Service really poor from most of the waitresses. Very dismissive, got accused/asked if I was in the restaurant when using the toilet. Asked for mint sauce for lamb and the waitress just said no and carried on walking.
Food very salty and buttery. Over priced meat and potato gratin was like eating salt potato in sea water. Almost inedable it was so salty.
There are plenty of better Sunday lunch spots out there.
A splendid anniversary celebration
We had to postpone a celebration with our family because of Covid. The establishment was very understanding snd rebooked.
The ambience was great, just as we hoped. The meal was wonderful! Portions were plentiful and very well cooked. There was a good choice and meals were adapted for children. Some of us had the signature lamb which was delicious (even a doggie bag (bowl) to take home!
Drinks were served promptly. Their own damson gin is delicious.
Very highly recommended.
WOW… mind blowing Sunday roast!! 10/10
WOW WOW WOW…. It’s hands down the best Sunday roast we’ve both ever had… just perfect amount & didn’t have to add any salt or pepper just 10/10!! The vibe is just cool, the service just nice & it’s like going back in time… proper London pub even crisps on the bar!! Such good valve for unbelievable lunch… We loved it & can’t wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyUnwelcome
It is rare for me to write a review- especially about a local pub that I frequent and recommend. But today I felt unwelcome the moment I walked in; dismissed by the owner and then subsequently accused for going to a table alone- hence not receiving service. The food is still good but in this day and age we look for respect and grace when choosing to dine out. I’m afraid I don’t think I am welcome to dine there again.
