😒 3/5 - Definitely not 5 star…

While this hotel may have 5 stars, I don’t see it. The property seems very worn; I thought I read it had been recently updated, but that does not seem in evidence. The pool area, in particular, is rather dreary and small. There are not enough chairs for everyone; and though I was assured by the pool staff, they would find me when chairs were available, I had to fend for myself. Even though I asked several times. The pool is quite small. There is a bar & the bartender was very polite and on-the-ball. However, I have to take issue with an 18% auto-gratuity on the very over-priced drinks & food ($23 for hummus, pita & a few veggies?). Typically, bar tips are lower than full table service. I don’t object to an auto-grat, but 18% for a couple of pool cocktails & snack food seems high (especially since they were overpriced items already). Our room was fine, it’s nice having the kitchen. But, again not a 5 star room. The closet was oddly small for a room for 4 people. The spa, which was the big draw for me, was fine. I had an excellent deep tissue massage by Eileen (she gets 5 stars). The thermal areas, which are available for any guest are nice—steam, sauna, spa pool, igloo & rain shower. And, the heated loungers are heaven. The staff seems overwhelmed; they overbooked the infrared sauna so I had to come back (but, they comped the treatment, which was very nice). Once I did get to do the infrared sauna, a spa staffer was supposed to come get me when it was done, but she never did. I saw the timer was at zero, so I let myself out and went back to the ladies spa room. I wouldn’t say the spa is beautiful—more utilitarian. The decor feels kind of random, without a unifying look. Admittedly, that doesn’t really matter, the treatments are why you go, but at a place that bills itself as the largest spa on the Eastern seaboard, they might have chosen a better interior designer. Overall, I don’t think I would return to the Carillon. If I was in Miami, I would visit the spa, but take a pass on the hotel.
