Good Food, Excellent Service
We had a very nice dinner with our friends. It is a lovely big restaurant that is part of a hotel in the center of town. The best part was the friendly and professional service. We felt welcomed. The food was good, some hits and some misses. Reasonable prices.

Wonderful stop. Great service. Excellent food. Good wine and cocktail list. Three different pasta dishes - all very good. Unassuming but comfortable ambiance.
Be the first to ReplyDecent food, inconsistent service
So the big issue with our experience here was the service. It was quite terrible, overall. Our initial server never showed up to take our drink or dinner orders, and while she did bring out a couple of our dishes after someone else took them, I am about 50% sure she was fired in the middle of her shift and did not finish the night out. That said — the more experienced crew member who stepped in when our original server was struggling/MIA was very good and the food was delicious! Wife and I both started with the chilled cucumber soup, which was really good (although i did expect a bit more blue crab than was served) and then shared the pig tails which were crispy and melt in your mouth all at once. For mains, farrato for the wife and mushroom gigli for me - again, both winners. So, we were impressed with what we ate and appreciate the server who stepped in and saved the dinner and not all was lost — but on the whole, this was not the service I expected from a Michelin star restaurant and that kind of marred the experience.

Came here for dinner. Place was empty and now I know why. High prices for overcooked and under seasoned food. Would not go back.
Be the first to ReplyVery little food for a very high price
We decided to try this restaurant because the MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View said the food was “good quality, good value cooking.” I guess that reviewer got a large free meal! Two of our party got the Rigatoni Boulognaise and two others got the Old Bay Rock Shrimp Strozzapreti. The Rigatoni was a small bowl of noodles with perhaps two tablespoons of meat sauce for $25.00. However, that was more than we got with the Rock Shrimp dishes, which consisted of a small bowl of curly pasta with about 6 tiny salad shrimp! I have had Rock Shrimp many times before, and they are always large shrimp that almost taste like lobster. It takes a lot of nerve to serve salad shrimp in a $25.00 dish. And, of course, both of these dishes were A La Carte, so the small dish was all you got. When we left the restaurant, we had to go straight to another restaurant to actually get something to eat. We will not try this place again.

Wait staff was less than experienced. Ribeye was delivered with its own steak knife, but even that could not cut it well. Ordered MW, but came oit w red on plate. Gold potatoes were good but served cold. Cheese board was taken up with mostly blue cheese and small morsels of other items. Desserts were just main dinner ingredients repurposed. Seriously disappointed
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming Experience
The food was good, but a little limited. The primary disappointment was the service. Our waitress was apparently too busy to address our needs on a more regular basses, Everything took too long (the order taking process, the delivery process and periodic attention). When the bill was received, we were charged twice for the most expensive entre (mistake?).
Be the first to ReplyRushed through our meal
Nice meal but I felt we were being hurried out, we sat at 8pm and had had three courses by 9pm. In fact as I was eating my dessert the check was brought over without us asking for it. Not satisfactory when it is supposed to be a special meal on our honeymoon.
Be the first to ReplyGood food; awful music
Good food, ok ambience, music terrible. Service inconsistent. Can eat indoors or on the back patio.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
Always loved this restaurant. We have a second home there and visit ofte. The greet staff is the best. It was a Friday night . Very few in restaurant. Wait staff too minimal. The fish I ordered was not edible. Very disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyGood not great.
Nice place. Had duck confit. A bit dry. Excellent beet salad and sides with duck very tasty. Friendly team. Got seated in area with two large groups so it was a bit noisy.
Be the first to ReplySadly did not live up to expectations :-(
To be fair, the effects of COVID on the hospitality industry are still being worked through for many businesses. That being said, this was truly a terrible experience. Evidently there was a party in the restaurant the same evening we had a reservation and that was frequently cited as a reason for poor service and misplaced orders - I would have expected a restaurant of this calibre to be able to accept the challenges of large parties or otherwise, decline the business.... We ordered cocktails - they only appeared after our wine and appetisers had finally been served. The vegetarian in the party was bluntly refused a dish of sauteed vegetables and instead had to order three appetisers to make up a main dish. The wine was dreadful...... I know! In Healdsburg! Bad wine...?!?!? Sorely disappointed.....
Be the first to ReplyIf only I could give ZERO STARS!
I have eaten at this restaurant in the past, before Covid, and it was really delicious. Since Covid, it is very different. After mouthful and mouthful of disappointment, I finally had to ask the wait staff if things were different than they were before. I was told that after reopening post-Covid they have a new manager and a new chef. I could not believe how bad the food was. It was startling. It was shocking. It was uncomfortable. It was baffling. I could go on and on, and not describe how terrible this food was. I cannot find one redeeming thing to say about it. And that is so terribly sad. It WAS a great restaurant, but I will unfortunately never walk through the door again.

We have been coming every year for the past several years, and once again, they did not disappoint. Service was excellent, pasta was tremendous. This is a shared plates type of venue, and they have a large variety of choices. In our group we have carvivores to vegetarians and all were happy!
Be the first to ReplyBrunch
Absolutely fantastic brunch! This was one of the best meals I had in Healdsburg, over Barndiva. Service was great as well. Give this place a shot!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food and good value.
A lovely restaurant with heavenly food and wine. Service was a bit choppy but they were responsive and outdid themselves to make things right. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyMassive Disappointment
Massive Disappointment. Great back patio with kind, considerate service. Bad food. Not just OK or less than expected. 2 duck confit dried out like paper bags. Tough overcooked pork belly. None of this should ever have made it out of the kitchen if anyone had checked. Had to chase down our drinks after a very long wait. Kudos that they comped most of the meal and were apologetic. Waste of a dining meal.
Be the first to ReplyHave the Pork belly appetiser!
We stumbled upon Chalkboard and it was an unexpected surprise. The outdoor seating area was a lovely place to dine and the Pork Belly biscuit appetiser is particularly delicious. The staff were very friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend this restaurant for any occasion.
Be the first to ReplyMostly not good
Strange dishes that did not taste good or taste at all, like mushroom pasta with no pasta or tomato pazonella salad with inedible stale bread, or beet salad with no dressing. We sent the pasta less pasta dish back only to get instead the inedible salad. We wont be back.
Be the first to ReplyExtraordinary Dining and Lodging Experience
10 friends wanted to create a very special 75th birthday celebration for another dear friend. I spoke with about 6 restaurants in Healdsburg and a couple outside of that charming town, expecting some degree of enthusiasm for providing a special dinner to 11 guests. Got nothing. Not a single restaurant was interested in accommodating us. One of the high-end restaurants in Healdsburg, which I won’t name, even told us that they had only two six tops which were on opposite sides of the room, and, no, they would not move them together. Furthermore, they instructed me that the kitchen (which should have been accustomed to serving a large dining room) would not be able to accommodate 11 people coming into the dining room at the same time and that we would have to stagger our two groups by 20 minutes! I kid you not. That was representative of the kind of support I got from most restaurants.
We kept looking. While we were checking out the Hotel Les Mars for our one-night stay that we were hoping to pair with our dinner in Healdsburg, we decided to check out their restaurant Chalkboard. The dining room was closed at that point but when we walked in we encountered three employees who were presumably in a meeting. Immediately they greeted us and asked if they could help. Two of the employees were the General Manager of the hotel and restaurant Demetri, and the Food and Beverage Manager Annette. From the start both were warm and hospitable. We had an extended conversation with Annette and she made it clear she was excited for us to make this into a very special evening.
Lest you think we had connections with the hotel or restaurant, nothing could be further from the truth. None of us knew anyone at this venue, so the treatment we received was as complete strangers. Annette and her crew went way over the top in the planning of our party and in delivering the goods. They threw in so many extras that undoubtedly the party would have cost 2 or 3 times what we paid. Yes, we were guests of the hotel for one night but still the completely over-the-top attention to details was unbelievable. They treated us like we were a party of 100, not 11. And as if we were some significant group of people or significantly wealthy (which we were not on both counts!). This of course is simply spectacular hospitality which the hospitality industry has seemed to lose touch with.
I won’t go into detail on the actual dinner as other folks on this forum have already raved about the food. What I will say is: it was extraordinary and there were several folks in our group with very sophisticated palettes. The food and preparation were at the same time both simple and sophisticated, the service incredibly attentive (Sarah, our primary server was a blessing…she made us believe she REALLY wanted this to be a special evening and she provided a vase of tulips for the table and a small flower included in the napkin ring.) The table was set in a simple and elegant fashion. All food – 10 separate dishes! – was served family style in keeping with the unpretentious feel that Chalkboard clearly wishes to convey, and which was perfect to our liking (nothing worse than pretension, which sadly one finds so often in the food and wine business). The quantities of each dish were more than adequate; we left the table stuffed and very happy.
The hotel -- part of the Relais & Chateaux brand -- though certainly not inexpensive, provided extraordinary rooms, and allowed us to make our dinner party into a much larger 24 hour event.
Everyone in our party was overwhelmed by the quality of the food and the extreme degree of hospitality we received from both the restaurant and hotel. Surely we will return for future special events. Annette and her team were a dream to work with.
Excellent Service, Quality and Experience!
My husband and I took our fried overnight away from home since welcoming our baby, a year ago. We stayed at Hotel La Mars and dinned at Chalkboard. Every detail of our experience was wonderful.
Demetri, the Manager was delightful, helpful and kind! Our server, Megan was highly knowledgeable about the menu, food preparation, wine list and pairings. She guided us through one of the best meals we have had in a looooong time!
We had the French onion soup, Ceaser salad to share, followed by the BEST Trout dinner dish I have had in years! It was cooked to perfection, paired beautifully with the wine recommended by Megan. We split a couple desserts and couldn’t have been more pleased. Service was authentic and on point. The food was creative and executed perfectly.
Shout out to Demetri and Megan for making our night out so special. We will be back!
Chalkboard is......fine.
The Michelin rating is both a blessing and curse. Chalkboard was...fine. The food was good, the service was good and the atmosphere was good. But, we were wanting and expecting more. It would have fit in nicely with our Midwestern college town restaurant scene that is loaded with really good restaurants - but this is a Michelin restaurant. The chicken biscuits were great, and the Holiday Mule was delicious. Everything else was unremarkable. (We order the Little Gem Salad, Coq Au Vin chicken and Candy Bar dessert.) It was fine. Lower your expectations for this one, and you'll be happier with the outcome.
Delectable dishes in a charming space
Chalkboard’s long and narrow space along a cute downtown street manages to be spacious and cozy at once. The service was friendly and paced well… we didn’t wait for anything yet didn’t feel rushed. Moderate prices for fresh and delicious food. The four of us ordered a total of six dishes plus bread and found it to be just the right amount. The pasta dishes were divine and the proteins were delectable. Very charming and would recommend!
Be the first to ReplyIt was OK
We had a reservation outside. Glad we were outside, because the tables inside were very close together with a lot of people. the outside dining was in a large tent, so it was pretty warm and we had a nice table toward the back. Our server explained the menu and was very patient and friendly. Split a little gem salad and Broccolini. Husband got the Old Bay Strozzaprati and I got the trout. Both were good. We enjoyed the evening until a group of 24 came in and sat in the back at a large table. We couldn't hear ourselves talk. I guess that happens, but it was very noisy.
Be the first to ReplyUpscale casual with beautiful outdoor dining
Upscale casual bistro located in the Les Mars Hotel just off the square in Healdsburg. Tapas type of menu and the servers do a good job explaining portions etc, so we were perfect on what we ordered. We started with an excellent steelhead trout crudo- so delicate it melted in your mouth and was paired with an excellent hot pepper and citrus sauce. We each got a salad - the Caesar was very good and the market salad had an amazing vinaigrette dressing. For dinner the steak came perfectly prepared medium rare and the clams were served in a hearty spicy and garlicky sauce. For dessert we chose the Toffee cake with ice cream - this was the only improvement I noted - basically a small 1.5” scoop of ice cream with a 6” diameter cake - just a slightly larger amount of ice cream would have been perfect. The wine list is thorough.
