High prices.... for what? As this is advertised as traditional Chinese fare, I will review it as such. The dishes are literally 6x the price as in China. Surely we would receive higher quality ingredients and better service?
Nope. The service in China is better and they don't demand tips. Take a dish here, like gong bao ji ding (kung pao chicken). In china it is generally 10 RMB (less than 2 dollars) for the same portion. It includes leeks, Sichuan pepper, etc. Here it contains green onion and little to no sichuan pepper. Given that those two ingredients cost much more here, they are not that expensive. Sichuan peppers and the oil can be sourced at quite reasonable costs, you can see the price of a leek in any supermarket. This dish here is too sweet and not at all spicy.
So we are paying higher prices for an inferior good.
Gan bian dou jiao (fried green beans) here are not cooked at high enough temperatures. They are not crispy or dry and they do not have Sichuan peppers. Coming from a place called "Chengdu Taste," the capital of Sichuan, I am perplexed. Not to mention (oops) that I could taste the oil which was dripping to the bottom of the plate.
The la zi ji (basically spicy popcorn chicken here) in China is so crispy and spicy. It uses chicken with bones with the skin which makes it crispier. Generally little to no breading. One of my favorite dishes. Here it is cheap chicken breast with breading that is fried. Popcorn chicken.... smh.
I have been here exactly three times to try some of my favorite dishes each time. Each time I was disappointed. While this truly is traditional Chinese food, in comparison to China this is severely lacking and I have been to other Sichuan restaurants in the area which are of higher quality.
