Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Love the ambiance, service as quick-- Mediterranean bread
Love the ambiance, service as quick-- Mediterranean bread was really good-- star of the show. Meat pot pie & sausage grinder was okay-- I'd only come back if someone was visiting and wanted to eat at a Chicago spot.
The service was excellent!! The historical restaurant
The service was excellent!! The historical restaurant elevated the vibe of Old Chicago! The pizza pot pie lived up to the reputation!
First time coming here and I really enjoyed it.
Service was great and friendly. Server recommended we try the Mediterranean bread which did not disappoint. We also got the chef salad which was fresh and amazing. The pizza pot pie was great as well. I thought you could customize it but that wasn't available. My friend also ordered meatball sandwich to go which she said she enjoyed. I probably won't go back only because I like my pizza the old fashioned way but I had to try the pot pie at least once.
So good!!! Definitely a must to get the Mediterranean Bread
So good!!! Definitely a must to get the Mediterranean Bread (not pictured). The Pot Pie was so really good too!
The service was 5 stars.
We had a reservation at 5:15 and they were right on time and our waitress was very nice. The food was not my favorite so I was quite disappointed about that because I was really looking forward to it. We split a chef's salad (the dressings were good), a mediterranean bread, and a half-pound pizza pot pie (vegetarian, no mushroom). The mediterranean bread had a bit too much parmesan for my liking and the pizza pot pie sauce was not sweet enough for me, the bell peppers were strong in it. The dough of the bread was very good though and I liked the garlic flavor and other seasonings. The crust and cheese were very good for the pizza pot pie I just wish the sauce was sweeter. They cut the pizza pot pie for you which is nice, and they are always cleaning the tables taking dishes you are done with. Overall would probably go to another pizza place in Chicago but the service was fantastic and I had a good experience.
Old school restaurant with wood from the floor to ceiling.
We ordered plain and pepperoni. Pizza pot pie presentation was very impressive. I enjoyed it more than the pizza. The pepperoni comes on the side. 3 pieces were the size of Taylor ham. Omar gave the pot pie a few swirls and popped on our plates. The salad was my favorite. Enough to feed 3-4 people. The staff was very attentive Make a reservation

Only had to wait 5 minutes for our reservation even though the place was packed. Waitress was super sweet. Mediterranean bread and pizza pot pies were yum! Would go back

This place is one of my favorites! The pot pie pizza is one of a kind. Flat bread is so delicious and don't forget the salad... yummy
So prepare yourself for a good wait.
I believe they offer reservations but it was nice Sunday this May, we saw a play and took a chance. For the 60 min wait, we just moseyed over to Lincoln Park Zoo for a short walk in the garden area. Now on to the amazing meal. Salad for two. OMG a that dressing. I did the individual and mix. This is a game changer. Mediterranean Bread, pizza and ice cream. Yup! I saved room at the end for this delectable dessert. This spot has been on my list for ages and I'm glad I finally got to check it out. Service, food and ambiance all amazing. I wish I could remember our server, tall gentlemen name but I can't. He was a menu expert and super gracious. Again, give yourself time to arrive, wait if necessary and enjoy the meal experience. Cash ONLY!

Been to many places in Chicago but this was one for the books. Loved the food and great service!
Been coming here for 20 years, always amazing.
Food and the experience is awesome. Don't forget to bring cash, they don't take cards
Go for the antipasto and Mediterranean bread! Skip the pizza pot pie.
Best antipasto I’ve ever had, highly recommend it with the Mediterranean bread. As native Chicagoan who loves Chicago pizza - skip the pizza pot pie, I was very disappointed in it.
A chicago institution that has not changed in 30 years!
A chicago institution that has not changed in 30 years! First went there 30 years ago and haven't been back sense. They have a limited menu that is fantastic if you like deep dish pizza although they call it a pizza pot pie. The ingredients are put into a bowl and the crust over the top and then baked in the oven. You can order half pound or 1 pound pot pies. Half pound is great for 2 people. It comes with either vegetarian or meat sauce, peppers sausage mushrooms and cheese. When they serve it at the table it looks like a loaf of bread! Then they turn it over and remove the bowl and all the hot gooey ingredients go into the delicious crust. Just amazing and don't forget 2 things. 1 they only take cash and there us an ATM just outside and 2 they take reservations which is a godsend. We may not get back to chicago for many years but we will always stop there for a great meal Completely forgot to take pictures
I Remember going here over 30 years ago and it being
I Remember going here over 30 years ago and it being totally awesome. A group of us would go out Wednesday nights after teaching adult figure skating classes. Fast forward to a few weeks ago. I was totally bitching at my husband that we never go on date nights. (We don't) He asked me where I wanted to go- and I said the zoo (Lincoln park) and then said "and Chicago Pizza and oven Grinders"because it is only a few blocks away. Keep in mind that I live well over an hour away now. I called and made a reservation two nights before, for a Sunday. The available times were limited but, it didn't really matter to me as I could be flexible with the rest of my day. We showed up a few minutes early. It was under a ten minute walk from the zoo. The place was PACKED!!! In the few minutes we wait to be seated, at least 4 families came in with no reservations and were told "two hour wait". They were all okay with waiting. That is how good the food is. We ordered a salad to share and both had upside down pizza bowls. The food is even better than I remember. The waitress was very attentive and polite. The only suggestion I would make is that the tables by the windows (facing west) have sort of shade. Tinted or whatever. I was being blinded by the sun but, it was worth having a window seat. I love this place ! Oh- and they sell the unique garlic sour cream dressing and poppyseed dressings in bottles to take home, which of course I did. They are both fantastic. Even better mixed together.

So simple yet so delicious!!! My first time coming here and loved it. It's a pub like restaurant with dim lighting and lots of seating. The bread is amazing! I could've ate that for my entire meal and been satisfied. But the pot pies take it over the top, delicious. We got the veggie one which is just cheese mushrooms and sauce but was really flavorful. I would definitely come back!

*CASH ONLY* Fun vibes, friendly service, but definitely not the best pizza I've tried in Chicago. It doesn't mean that it's bad --in fact, it's good. But it's only good until you're quarter of a pizza in, at least it was for me
good pizza good day.
Great food, great times, amazing atmosphere ! ! Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder DEFINITELY an experience. Thank you for pizza.
Home of the pizza pot pie.
Definitely make reservations as this place was packed. Very small place so be prepared to sit close together. Started with their chef's salad. I don't typically get salads at restaurants but I really enjoyed this one. All the veggies were fresh and it comes with a garlic sauce and house dressing. The garlic sauce was solid but the house dressing was amazing and sweet. Thirty minutes later our pizza pot pies came. We all got one-pounders (waitress talked us into it, up from the half-pounder) with meat sauce and mushrooms. My favorite part of the dish was the crust. It was on the sweeter side but also the perfect crunch. Plenty of cheese on top and a nice savory sausage inside. I do wish there was more sausage and the mushrooms were chopped and spread across though. Overall, this was a great experience trying something different. Don't know if I will be back due to my interest in pizzas but definitely recommend trying both the salad and pot pie.

We were in town for a cubs game and walked the 2 miles down Clark to visit for dinner. And it was worth the hype! Awesome service and great food. I would definitely recommend a reservation. We were here on a Friday night and it was very busy. Get the Mediterranean bread and pizza pot pie!
Great food.
We visit family in Chicago often and they always say hi Debbie! The toppings are amazing!

Ooooh Mediterranean Bread, how I love thee! Across the street from the St valentine massacre, this historical landmark serves a unique spin on deep dish za The wait can be painful, so be prepared or time it right. Another cash only establishment ( we're kinda used to this in the Chi ) is dripping with curious history and mysterious stories and the pizza-in-a-bowl is fresh, served piling hot (consider yourself warned) and super filling

The Mediterranean bread is amazing very flavorful and the perfect thinness (might be my favorite part). The 1/2 lb pies are perfect enough to compete the meal, the crust is cooked perfectly and sauce has enough flavor thanks to the sausage. Mushrooms are a must.

This is the best pizza I've ever had! Truly amazing and most try while in Chicago. Get the pot pie with meat!
The food here is amazing.
Definitely not overhyped and is reasonably priced for being in Chicago and being so popular. Even though its always but the service is normally always at least a 7/10. Do yourself a favor and get the Mediterranean bread with their special seasoning bottle on the side. Will always take my friends/family here when they are in town. Highly recommend!
One of our favorite Chicago spots.
We go for the pizza pot pies, a variation on deep dish that comes out in a bowl with the crusty bread top overflowing. The server pries it out of the bowl at your table, serving upside down, exposing a blanket of gooey cheese that hides the pie's underlying pizza toppings. Delish. Hints: Get a reservation and bring cash--they don't take plastic. And enjoy.
Some employee just chased me out of the restaurant.
Tried to get a slice at 11 pm. Right as they close which I understand is not the best move by me. I walk in to the restaurant and he ripped his jacket on and chase my out. The guy should've been wearing a clown mask he's such a joke. Most wild restaurant experience I've ever had. Honestly hilarious but couldn't imagine treating paying customer like this
The Mediterranean bread with the salad with the poppy seed
The Mediterranean bread with the salad with the poppy seed dressing oh my god! Truly a gift from heaven itself. If you come here and don't get the pizza that's okay!!! Please get the bread with the salad and your life will change! Bonus points if you grab a piece of the bread with your fork and also stick some salad on it to make the perfect bite.
So good we went twice!
The Mediterranean bread and salad with dips were beautiful though we struggled to eat the even more delicious pizza pot pie for our mains. We just had to come back again and only order the pot pie so we could finish it. My advice is to go on an empty stomach! Our server Tyler was exceptional on our first visit - very attentive and helpful, and just an all round decent guy. It was less friendly the second time, more functional, but it was ok. I think Tyler spoilt us the first time ;-) Oh, and the dipping sauces that come with the salad are to die for! Can’t wait to return.
Bland Dog Food and Rude Staff
For my first time here I was extremely disappointed. This was my second time in Chicago and my mom wanted to treat me out. She had bragged about this place so much and to get there and be treated the way we did was god awful. I was told an hour and a half wait with a reservation and it was 10 minutes before it was our turn and was told to wait an additional 30 minutes! While we were waiting in the foyer there was a dog in the window and the dog was walking around the table and eating off the plates and the utensils. The waitress had pet the dog and continued to serve other tables without washing her hands. When it was our turn the waitress had tried to give us the table. After my mom had told the waitress that there was a dog on the table and that she was allergic, the waitress stared at her like she was dumb and offered nothing else. That dog was not a service dog and you can tell. Little Chihuahua size dog with no leash or anything. And when they left the dog was barking at everyone and everyone. Table was not clearly cleaned off up to code. This was unacceptable. After we explained our concern she told us there was nothing to do and ended up giving another table. Food was extremely bland and had a god awful waitress, pushing our glasses and messed up our order twice. And when we were trying to explain what was missing from the table she gave us an attitude about having to go back and correct the order. I was told the sauce was cooked for 9 hours and it tasted like it was from a can you can buy at Walmart. Will most likely never go back unless something changes from the place. 1/10 only because I was starved.
Go if you want to have dog hair in your food and rude staff with a side of lackluster food
DO NOT GO HERE! If you have any kind of allergies! I have went to this place in the past and it used to be a fabulous out of the way small place with good pizza pie. Now its nasty, you have a ridiculous wait even with a reservation and the staff is rude and treat you like cattle just to turn tables for more customers. BUT THE THING THAT DID IT FOR ME AND DISPITE MY LONG HISTORY OF GOING TO THIS PLACE IS THAT THERE WERE TWO DOGS ALL OVER THE TABLES LIKING AND EATING OFF THE SILVERWARE AND DISHES FUR FLYING EVERYWHERE!!! THE WAITRESS WAS PETTING THE DOG AND THEN GOING TO SERVE ANOTHER TABLE WITHOUT WASHING HER HANDS! And before anyone starts about service animals they werent they were just brought in by people who felt privledge because they knew the staff wouldnt question them. The place is too small to have animals sitting on tables not to mention unsanitary! The board of health needs to be brought in. I will not be returning to this place. The pizza pies lack flavor and despite what they claim its sauce out of a can not slow cooked for hours. Manger needs to be fired!
Different take on pizza
We’ve heard a lot about this place and finally got to try it. My hubby loved the pizza - I thought it was undercooked. Also, this is a cash only business. Thank goodness my husband had cash because we normally don’t carry cash.
Upsetting experience at a Chicago legend
Very poor Salad - just leaves and 2/3 pieces of artichoke and tomatoes. All ingredients had no taste. Sources for salad were either garlic or super salty. Very famous pizza would probably score 3/5 maximum. Too much dough - and it was partly raw. Don’t even try prosecco - it was badly sweet. Overall extremely upset with the dinner. The only nice thing about the restaurant was the waiter and corona bier out of the bottle.
Service and quality has gone downhill compared to how awesome it USED to be.
Can you believe they refused to put extra sauce on a meatball grinder. They said it's their policy. We placed a $170+ order and they didn't care. When I spoke to a manager she said it was their policy and they would never give extra sauce on a sandwich. I called a talked to a second manager who gave the excuse that it takes over 10 hours for the sauce to cook and that the recipe is very precise. Not sure what that has to do with an extra spoonful of sauce on a sandwich.

The site doesn't have resources to properly execute a reservation transfer. Some places allow it however the best bet is to open a chat on the listing from the seller and communicate there

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
