Good food, long wait and noisy
I know this place got a lot of hype but I don't get it. Yes, some of the food is really good, like the Crab Tagliatelle and the oyster rolls are fabulous. The cauliflower is good, but let's face it, it's cauliflower, The bone marrow was definitely not my thing but I know a lot of people like it. You can't order your own dinner so the table gets a bit of everything. It's expensive and so noisy you can't hear yourself think, let alone have a conversation. And don't even mention the ridiculous line to get in! The servers are really exceptional and answer any questions with patience and knowledge. If you don't mind the wait or the noise, go for it.
Be the first to ReplyIf youโre willing to wait, go here for elevated seafood dishes
We happened to drive by a looong line of people waiting on the sidewalk as we were leaving town to have dinner at Nickโs German Kitchen. Wondering what the wait was for, I checked my map program and found the likely source - Chubby Fish. After reading many raving reviews, and craving some seafood anyway, we decided to give this a try. So on a Saturday afternoon, we walked over to the Chubby Fish and were not too surprised that at 4PM on a Saturday we were not the first people in line, waiting for the 5 PM opening. (There were about 5 parties in front of us, so we were definitely positioned pretty well.) We were quite impressed, however, at how long the line would grow to be during the next hour. And how many cars would drive by, windows open, yelling โItโs worth the wait!โ At 5 PM the doors promptly opened and two greeters came out to start seating people. We received the requested table by the window for the two of us, and were told to take a picture of the menu hanging above the bar to use for ordering. We decided on two appetizers - the tilefish ceviche and the wagyu beef tartare (my husbandโs preferred choice, though I like to remind him he/we may end up with prion disease later on in life โฆ he just comments that at least weโll forget about it LOL). They came out separately and were both so delicious. Even my picky husband who had previously proclaimed that this restaurant might just be a money making fad aka โgoldmineโ, admitted that the dishes lived up to his hoped-for expectations. The tartare was served with rice and seaweed wraps, and we were instructed to combine the rice and tartare in the wrap, and eat it together. It was amazing! My husbandโs European heritage initially struggled with this combination. But I was able to convince him to try it, and he quickly admitted what an unexpected treat this was! As a main course we had ordered the smoked sheepshead curry and the blue crab tagliatelle. My husbandโs dish (tagliatelle) came out first, and he decided to wait for my dish to be served before starting his. Unfortunately by that time, his had cooled off a bit, which he criticized (to me). Later on we saw that the neighboring tables were sharing all main courses amongst one another, which prevented any need to wait for all dishes to be out before starting to eat. Both the curry as well as the tagliatelle were delicious. But we liked the spiciness of my curry dish paired with the roasted nuts so much, that we ordered another one, which we ended up getting boxed and taking home. Overall the food was great, our server was awesome and totally on the spot from the get go. Beer and sodas btw are served by the can, with cartoon character glasses. Prices are on the higher end, but I feel worth it for the excellent dishes. Was it worth getting in line an hour before opening to get a seat? I feel it was. Would I do it again? Yup. Iโll get in line here again. Or better yet come later during the week and hopefully avoid having to wait altogether, the next time Iโm in town.

I am always hesitate to shell out five stars but the dish I had was a five star dish. It was wahoo with coconut and Brussels sprouts and it was the best dish I have had in a long time. Amazing! I was not a fan of the community table where my husband and I got the last seats, although the other dinners were delightful. But since we took a chance and were Lucky enough to get in, we made the most of the no reservations situation. Prices continue to go up on restaurant meals and sometimes I am uncomfortable with the amount we are spending. For this reason we may only go back for a really special occasion. The bill for the celery salad, tile fish curry entree (which was spicy and really too hot), wine and two beers for $140 was a lot for a Tuesday night.

We didnโt get. No reservations allowed and three hour wait for a table ๐ The maitre dโ recommended a great place around the corner. We told our waitress what happened. She said, โOh, thatโs my favorite restaurant.โ Maybe next time.

A brightly lighted stop on a busy street in the further part, so past Uhaul. Itโs a draw for the eyes and ears as you step in and breathe. This is a restaurant. So go right in. Menu is filled with all kinds of offerings of Shellfish and Flatfish as Seviche and Crudo too. There really is some- thing there for everybody and Oysters too. The Lamb Ribs came first and I was surprised but they are good and hot. The Poached Barrel Fish was filled with Asparagus, Broccoli and Beets made spectacular by the Bone Broth Local sparkling water and no coffee. Service and kitchen are tremendously involved and it shows.

Cute neighborhood restaurant with eclectic interior. Beers were served in old smurf glasses. We sat at the bar in front of the food preparation area, and it was fun to watch all the excellent dishes being made. Had the grilled oysters, shrimp, and oyster roll. All fantastic. The highlight, surprisingly, was the banana pudding ice cream dessert!

This was our first visit to this highly touted restaurant and it was so worth waiting in line for them to open up. We were seated at a bar overlooking the kitchen and Iโm so glad we were since itโs entertaining to see the teamwork and meticulous artistry that goes into the cuisine they serve. Thereโs a wide variety of appetizers and small plates to start off with. We elected to share the grilled oysters and the blackfish tempura - both excellent. As a middle course, we shared the garlic shrimp over rice which was my favorite. As a main entree we ordered the whole Snapper which had a strange aftertaste - probably due to the begs they pour over the fish. The service here is so caring they immediately asked if we wanted a different entree and took the fish off the menu but we chose not to. Honestly the fish looked so delicious and I think it just wasnโt for us. Other dishes that looked wonderful were the tuna crudo, the monkfish and the fish collar. Wine was superb - we ordered a French Sauvignon Blanc. Canโt wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyWorth the wait!
Went here after looking for some good local seafood restaurants online. First thing to know is there are no reservations and the place is small so timing is everything. I went by myself after 8 on a weekday and was able to sit at the bar with no wait, larger parties will have a wait. Menu is right above the bar and kitchen is right in front of you, as soon as I had chosen my dish I saw something that looked better. Ended up deciding on the swordfish steak with chanterelle mushrooms and peppers. Everyone around me had different dishes and we're raving about them. Kitchen is constantly working hard and very meticulous when plating which is always a good thing. Food took awhile to come out but it was very busy at the time. Food was plated right in front of me and looked great going together. Fist bite and wow it was amazing! The swordfish is filling and so flavorful. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting or living here. I will be returning here in the future when I come back to Charleston.

Excellent food made to be shared. Very nice ambiance in a quaint neighborhood. Oysters are delicious. Fish curry was spectacular. The menu rotates daily. Get there early and put your name in!
Be the first to ReplyThe fish is better than sex!!!
The Hungry Detective finally made it to chubby Fish after many many tries... Don't be discouraged by people waiting outside to be seated that's a sign of how good the spot is and it is worth the wait go down the street and have a glass of wine or sit outside and have a glass of wine and people watch and you'll be fine. The fish here is absolutely wonderful I had the grouper and it was exceptional white and flaky and just prepared to perfection I also had the tile fish curry on rice which was incredibly tasty. Our server Hunter was on point and knows the business he did an awesome job!!! VERDICT: Guilty as sin for preparing fish the way it should be.
Be the first to ReplyChubby Fish (more like fresh fish!)
We went to Chubby Fish after checking into our house rental. We were a group of three women celebrating a 50th birthday. We put our name on the list (40 min wait), the hostess recommend a great cocktail bar called the Last Saint while we waited, it was really good! At Chubby Fish, we tried the raw and cooked fish (amazing flavors and new fish that we had not had before) and all were fantastic. We also had the tartar and it was so yummy. The name should be Amazing fresh fish, I would absolutely come back when in the area!
Be the first to Replygood food, but don't park - leave the car running
Over-rated... food was decent but they're getting an attitude you don't want when dining out. After waiting an hour, felt very rushed ("please order everything right now except dessert/coffee, so we can help the kitchen staff"). The prices aren't cheap, so you would expect more from the place in terms of putting the customer first... seems like they put the register / revenue first, at the expense of the customer. Table next to us did same thing - reduce order to a few apps, one glass of overpriced wine, then split.
Be the first to ReplyUNBELIEVABLY GREAT FOOD
My husband and I learned of this place over a year ago and just have not been able to go until now. To say it was worth the wait would be an understatement. OH MY WORD - it was fabulous. It was possibly the best meal we have ever had! Plus our server was very knowledgeable and helped us combine flavors and make selections. Tip: Go during the week and arrive at 5pm so you get a table.
Be the first to ReplyWow! Totally worth the wait.
Wow! Totally worth the wait. Every single dish was more divine than the one before it. The menu descriptions do not do the food justice-need more adjectives. Chili Garlic Shrimp and the Fresh Fish Curry were 2 favorites. Trust your wait staff when suggestions are offered. Three of us dined and ordered 6 dishes-plus one of each dessert selections. Donโt miss the โNot Fried Chickenโ one. Get there at opening time and put your name on the wait list. Go have a drink and a nibble then come back for a dinner to remember.
Be the first to ReplyAn eclectic meal experience
This was a very delicious and different dining experience. Our server had told us that everything on the menu was meant to be shared so we expected larger portions but that was not the case. We ordered a dozen oysters, don't ask for crackers or cocktail as they don't have those, we didn't care for the jam that was served with the oysters but the oysters were delicious alone. We also ordered the ceviche and it was the best I have ever had, incredible!!! Finally we shared the grouper but my husband and I could have ordered two plates of that, one because it wasn't a large portion and two because it was absolutely incredible!!! We enjoyed our meal there and the neat little dishes they served them on!
Be the first to ReplyBest meal in Charleston.
What a fabulous experience!!! We got in line at 4:50 and barely got in for the 5:00 seating. The menu was extensive and changes daily. We had caviar petite sandwich, Peterโs point oysters, charred lamb chops and the smoked wahoo curry. All excellent!! I canโt imagine one thing that would not be good. They do take names for a second seating. Best and most fun meal we had in Charleston! Wait staff was EXCELLENT
