Clos Maggiore London Reviews from The Last Year
Wonderful experience
An enchanting atmosphere with attentive and fantastic staff! Giles was our primary waiter and made sure we had a dining experience to remember! Thank you to Giles and all the staff! We will return!
Lukewarm at best
Overpriced, extremely small portions and lukewarm food at best. What a let down! Arrival wasn’t great, our table wasn’t ready and the atmosphere upstairs was as bland as the decor.
Great Food, Diabolical Service - READ & BE WARNED
What a poor experience for a Mother's Day Lunch. BE WARNED Booked at least a month in advance and requested their best accessible table for the best Mother in the World (of course). They leave it until just the day before to inform me that it's one step into the restaurant but a "few steps" to the toilets on the first floor (understatement of the year). There was no way my Mother was going to be able to go upstairs, so I had to delay our departure to allow her to toilet one more time at home to avoid the necessity whilst dining. Before setting off, I messaged the restaurant to advise them of a slightly later arrival time and because I realised it was now raining. I also called en-route to confirm we were were going to be about 20 mins late (as I had courteously indicated to them earlier) but the receptionist said she would have to ask the kitchen as they would be "closing at 2.30pm". I re-iterated I had a disabled Mother on board, hoping she would be more sympathetic and accommodating, to no avail. She asked me to hold on but then the call was terminated. I called again 5 minutes later to be told she was still waiting to ask the kitchen and that she would call back. I got the impression, she couldn't care less either way and, besides, there was a £40 per head charge secured by credit card for a no-show, irrespective of the fact that the table was booked for 2 hours. The restaurant called back 5 minutes later and asked if we could get there in 10 minutes - again no consideration for the fact that arriving in a car would involve parking it first and that it takes time to get someone into a wheelchair and a bit longer to push them. Nevertheless, we arrived, parked and got to the restaurant 15 minutes later - wet, stressed out and full of foreboding. Our feelings were not misplaced. We approached the door and I could see some staff standing at the reception desk chatting. I knocked on the door to grab their attention but they were too busy to be interrupted. Then a customer who was on his way to the toilet noticed our predicament and opened the door for us. The staff continued to chat even though they saw us trying to struggle through the doorway with the wheelchair. Finally, they acknowledged us, asked our name, took our umbrella and then directed us to a waiting area through another set of doors. Bearing in mind it was now 30 minutes later than our booked time, they still kept us waiting for another 10 minutes before we were taken to our table. Call me cynical but it seemed the table we got was punishment for arriving late. It was a fairly plain table in the centre section, far from the stunning main room or the cosiness of the bar area - in fact opposite the exit of the kitchen, so Mum was subject to a constant cold draft from possibly a window open inside the engine room. Anyway, we ordered our drinks and food, skipping a starter as we didn't want to get thrown out for overstaying. The food duly arrived, it was very good - and so at least this went well. Then I asked for a stirrer as Mum's drink had settled. The waiter went off, walked back and forth several times serving other diners - and then promptly forgot about my request. Ten minutes later, I asked a waitress for a stirrer too - she did exactly the same thing - walked off, walked back and forth several times serving other customers and also forgot about us. So I went to the bar myself, asked for a stirrer (which they seemed somewhat perplexed about) and returned with a long spoon, rather than one of the glass stirrers I was expecting for such a fine establishment. We ordered desserts. When the waitress delivered them, I pointed out the long spoon I had to get myself - she mumbled some excuse about being busy. We enjoyed the desserts though whilst watching her being very attentive to other diners, some of which were just receiving their desserts at 4pm - so much for the kitchen closing at 2.30pm. We took our time to allow Mum to get warm with my jacket and then asked for our bill. This was promptly brought by the waiter I had asked for a stirrer - so I showed him I had got one myself, to which he also mumbled an excuse about not knowing what I meant - yet he didn't bother asking me again or returning to our table to tell me so. The previously very busy waitress wasn't so busy though to take my payment (with 12.5% "service charge" added) and we got ready to leave. Knowing that we would have two sets of doors to manage, none of the staff had the common sense to follow us and to help with opening the doors. Oh no, it took another diner to open the first set of doors for us - and then I had to ask one of the staff still chatting at the reception to open the external front door, an absolute poor display of bad manners for such a lauded-establishment. So to the owners (if they can even be bothered to read reviews) I say...You clearly need to train your booking/reception staff to read booking requests and to be more sympathetic and accommodating when an expected diner is disabled: You clearly need to install some accessible toilets downstairs; You clearly need to train your staff how to be more mindful and helpful of disabled diners entering or accessing your restaurant - and, for such a fine establishment charging on average £100 per head, I'm sure you can just about afford some glass stirrers (and train staff what they are) so diners can stir their own drinks if necessary, rather than having to borrow a spoon from the bar. To everyone else I say, spend your money elsewhere where they really know what service is.
Great atmosphere, excellent food and outstsanding professional service
Romantic atmosphere, excellent food and knowledgeable professional service especially from the enthusiatic sommelier. Very very extensive wine list and some prices to match.
Great food but service too speedy and ruined by waiters dragging chairs backwards and forwards across our table
This is a pretty restaurant and the food and service were good in general. However, the starters and mains were served and consumed in under 45 mins. The ambiance was spoiled by waiters dragging chairs in front of and behind our table four times during our meal. This is supposed to be the most romantic restaurant in London but not when everyone is moving the furniture around! Not the best anniversary meal overall.
Classy as ever
This restaurant is a perennial favourite. It's so classy and does a lovely and useful pre-theatre supper. The staff are the epitome of well organised top level service.
The most romantic restaurant in London
We had our Anniversary set menu dinner here. The service was attentive/courteous, all the staff were pleasant, Francesco was superbly looking after all of us with elegance and grace. The food was divine and beautifully presented. The atmosphere and cosy surroundings make this place so special, along with impeccable service. A fantastic venue/restaurant to spend a special day with your partner or friends. A must booking for couples or friends.
Absolutely amazing!
The restaurant is beyond beautiful. The clever use of mirrors and flowers made the room seem larger and yet intimate. The open fire was a delight also. Every single member of staff was delightful and so helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. They explained dishes and wines. Can’t wait to go back!
Mixed again.....
Just another mixed experience: in summary, the conservatory is uniquely beautiful with a great ambience: - service is very attentive and friendly but a bit uncoordinated eg 3 times asked for food order by 3 different waiters before even being asked for a cocktails order to start with - food is very flavoursome indeed and cooked wonderfully but only luke warm so a bit disappointing - wine list amazing and a little overwhelming but with a knowledgeable helpful sommelier - lots of cheese options but only FOUR dessert choices (surprising for the French who excel in desserts) Of course, I would recommend but could do with more attention to fine detail.
Exceptional!
All round fabulous. From the wonderfully warm welcome and absolutely fantastic food to the excellent wine list and faultless service - all in such a beautiful setting. The personal touch's provided by Gilles made a 21st birthday lunch extra special. Thank you so much to all at Clos Maggiore - we will be back soon!
My husband made dinner reservations for us at Clos Maggiore
My husband made dinner reservations for us at Clos Maggiore for our first night in London. Upon entering the restaurant, it was as if I walked into a fairytale garden. The ceiling was fully decorated with flowers, and not a single spot was missed. The walls and columns were lined with shrubbery. The attention to detail is mind-blowing. Where am I??? Evidently, one of London's most romantic restaurants. According to Giles, our server, the set up of the flowers, and shrubbery gets changed frequently. For Christmas, the staff put up intricate lighting and fully decorated the entire restaurant with flowers and shrubbery all in one night. In 8 hours. That's dedication! After fawning over the flowers and shrubbery, we were ready for dinner, though after a whole week of heavy eating, I just couldn't stomach an entire tasting menu's worth of food, so we ordered a la carte instead. I could not resist getting steak tartare, so we ordered one, along with the venison loin and duck breast for our main courses and a side of French beans. The steak tartare was THE most beautiful steak tartare I've ever seen, like it came out of a garden. So beautifully decorated and bright! Alas, you must be eaten. Into my tummy, you go. Just as beautiful as the steak tartare looked, it tasted even better! We should have ordered two of these! Not long after, our main courses and side of French beans arrived. I don't know why I expected any less of the main courses when the appetizer tasted so good. Duck breast - the thickest 2 slices of duck breast I've ever seen in fine dining. It might well be 4 slices. It was perfectly cooked to medium-rare. So juicy and moist. The jus rounded out the whole dish, and everything just tasted soooo flavorful. I was worried the Szechuan Pepper was going to overpower the dish, but it was very, very mild, which I was relieved about. Venison - The perfect winter dish. The venison was super tender and delicious. The chestnut puree was cool, too. There is a reason why this item is on the tasting menu. The side of French beans was also good! The crispy shallots and French beans ate like a lighter version of a green bean casserole. I didn't think I would be so stuffed after eating all that food, but that generous portion of duck breast really did it for me! It was worth every bite, though. Sadly, we just had no more space for dessert. Our server Giles was so hospitable. He joked and laughed with us, making us feel so welcomed in his fairytale garden restaurant. He took great care of us throughout our meal! You won't want to miss out on dining at Clos Maggiore. What a magical experience!
Living in London quickly shows you that fancy and expensive
Living in London quickly shows you that fancy and expensive restaurants are hardly in short supply. You'll soon realize, however, that few of them are actually worth all the hype. I'm relieved to say that Clos Maggiore lives up to its price tag. In spite of being located in one of London's most touristy areas, the people here pride themselves on the quality of the food, drinks, and especially the service. The interior is gorgeously decorated, which is perfect for impressing business partners and potential romantic partners alike. The menu boasts a heavy influence of fine French cuisine, minus the cringe-worthy entrails of the food world. You'll find everything from seafood and meats, to a few vegetarian-friendly options like the Wild Mushroom Risotto with Parmesan Crisps, and Heritage Beetroot with Whipped Goat's Cheese and Salted Walnuts. The wine list is as extensive as one would expect from such a restaurant- it's practically a book- and their signature cocktails aren't too bad, either. My Rhug Estate Venison Loin with Chestnut Purée and Poached Pear was a melt-in-your-mouth cut of meat with a perfectly balanced flavor made all the better by the red wine jus drizzled on top. The Truffle Mashed Potatoes are the perfect side and one of the most popular dishes in the restaurant, for good reason. Desserts also abound, so save some room for the Goat's Cheesecake or Coconut Sorbet at the end of your meal. The portions are hefty but well worth it. Reservations are usually a must, but if you happen to be in the area and it's just yourself, on a slow day... you just might be able to luck out and snag a seat.
Alex and the team did a a great job of making our last
Alex and the team did a a great job of making our last night out in London special. The meal was fabulous. With a family member new to a dairy allergy, the team was attentive, kind and flexible to her needs. Lastly - the ambience holds up to what you see in pictures. We are thankful for a great family night out that we'll hold dear in our memories and would highly recommend to all. Thank you!
This place, not even sure where to begin really.
My wife and I came here on our honeymoon to celebrate, she picked this one out. The food, my goodness it's truly something. The portions look small at first but they're perfectly sized to fill you. And this is clearly a menu meant to try a little bit from every category. We shared a starter of the rabbit and ham hock terrine, c'est magnifique! Every bite is a delicate and delicious burst of flavors complex and intriguing on the tongue. I got the duck personally, it was spectacular. Again both a delicate and intriguing burst of flavor on the tongue truly this was wonderful in many ways! I got a side of the truffle mashed potatoes, a perfect complement to the duck! The service was amazing. We were never without a drink, our water was always full, and our waiter was exceptionally attentive. He was polite, kind, not overly friendly but also not extremely short. We had a little back and forth here and there, and he was wonderfully plesant. The ambiance is funny enough what drew us in here in the first place. We walked in and immediately were drawn in by the beautiful greenery woven throughout the restaurant. This place is a master class in how to make a beautiful restaurant, it was spectacular in the volume and tone of the music, the overall tone of the whole place. A perfect score for an amazing experience, thank you so much for helping make our honeymoon that much more special!
I made reservations for dinner here, and it's such a
I made reservations for dinner here, and it's such a romantic restaurant. I really loved the flowers everywhere! I also really enjoyed my food. For my main, I had the Scottish haddock and truffle mashed potatoes. The fish was nice, but the star of the entree was the mashed potatoes. These were so good!!! Probably the best mashed potatoes I've ever had. It was so creamy, so buttery, and full of truffle flavor! My better half ordered the steak, and the portion was very tiny! I think they should state how many ounces it is on the menu. Moving on to dessert: I had the strawberry basil parfait. It was a total work of art! It was also very delicious. The servers are all nice and professional.
This place is really stunning.
The restaurant itself is absolutely gorgeous - small and cozy but decorated with flowers - we sat in an incredible room with an open skylight. Food and drinks were incredible as well. Had the tasting menu- scallop, halibut and lamb were all delightfully fresh. Stand out was dessert- a beautifully made apple mouse inside of a hard shelled white chocolate apple. So innovative. Service was the only thing that was a bit off. Sometimes the servers felt stand offish and like anything we requested was burdensome in some way- though they seemed to warm up to us at the end.
