Whenever my wife and I take a trip to New Orleans we always make the time to eat here. My wife has always loved the attention to detail, the over the top service, the delicious food...most all of which was missing from the last time we dined there. One of the fun parts about eating here was the number of people they have to attend to your needs during the meal. There was always someone ready and willing to help take care of you at any time and they all worked like a well oiled machine. While the number of staff hasn't appeared to diminish, the quality of attentiveness and service most certainly has. We were seated in a what I would call a high traffic area where our table had people walking by on two of the four sides. We were just across from the wall which had at least 3 service people by it ready to go at any time, and yet when my wife excused herself to the rest room and left her napkin on her chair no one did anything about it. In the past they would come over, pick it up, fold it and place it back on the table for her return while they pushed in her chair. I counted 5 servers with free hands pass by before a middle-aged man in an all blue suit came waking by and he himself make the proper move to fix the napkin. Now I know what you are saying, this seems a petty item to take issue with. Well yes, it is. And I fully stand by my criticism. Commander's Palace is meant to stand out as a glorious homage to all that was good in the history of New Orleans, and all it's finest ornamentation. When the service starts to go and become just like any other restaurant I feel like it starts to loose it's luster. There were a couple of other issues with how the servers interacted with each other during our meal but I think I've made my point. The other disappointing part was the entree of my wife's meal. Overall I would say the meal was very good from my point of view. We started with Turtle Soup and Shrimp & Tasso Henican. Both were delicious. When the sherry hits the soup broth it's an amazing smell and if you were staying away from the Shrimp & Tasso Henican because it has okra, do not be afraid. It's a delicious plate of food that you will truly enjoy. My main was the Marseilles to Morocco and I loved it but my wife got the Bronzed Redfish and left over half undone. Either the dish was sitting too long or they over cooked it to begin with but the "mirror pond of caramelized Breaux Bridge crawfish fond" had congealed to a dull reddish brown and the entire dish was over salted. We went on to a cheese course and tried all three of the offerings. We enjoyed them all but were disappointed at the serving of them. We received more rind then cheese on some of them. The desserts were good. the souffle was delicious but the cheesecake was meh. Will we go back the next time we come, sadly I think probably not. New Orleans has too many talented chefs running amazing restaurants to give up a meal on a place you're not sure of anymore.
