Terrible customer relations.
Well, I have yet to eat here but am posting this review about their unacceptable customer service. My friend purchased me a gift via the Commis website for $500. I had a confirmation number and a photo of the purchase. This was April 6th. It is now May 26 th and Commis is unable to honor my gift. They use another company, TOCK, to send the egift cards. I never received one. I have contacted both restaurant and TOCK to no avail. The restaurant refused to honor my confirmation number from the purchase even with the photo. It has been SIX WEEKS and this is still not resolved. I found the owners on messenger and send them a letter, but no response. I find this absolutely unacceptable for a 2 star Michelin restaurant. Why is it now my problem because the company they deal deal with doesnโt follow through? I suggested we come in for dinner, since I had proof of purchase and they could deal with THEIR problem later. Not good enough. The manager told me that quite a few customers have had the same problem.!!!!! So fix it!!! donโt push the problem off onto the customer. Even if this gets resolved I will never, ever go to this restaurant. My $200 deposit has been refunded (required at the time of the reservation) and my friend is pursuing her $500 gift certificate through her credit card company. I hope they lose their Michelin stars.
Be the first to ReplySubpar overall performance
We were there in early November 2021. While some dishes are good, but overall, I don't see myself paying so much for the subpar food they offered. I don't have time to review each and every course, but, the worst still sticks in my mind was this main course of the meal, the duck. First of all, they provide a regular knife for the dish, thinking the meat is good enough without a steak knife. It turns out the meat was hard to cut and chewy. I could get a serving of this dish anywhere else for about $10-$20, with a more tender, juicy, and tasty presentation. Very disappointed in comparison with others. I think I even got a better experience in a one-star restaurant in Barcelona, which we did not have to have a deposit for the reservation.
Be the first to ReplyMy first two star Michelin restaurant -- and I definitely was not disappointed
While I have recently moved to Oakland, I have not had an opportunity to try out Oakland's only Michelin restaurant (that happens to be two stars). Fortunately, a business dinner allowed me this opportunity.
As this is a fixed-menu place, the dishes and drink pairings you get can, and will, vary each time you come here.
The service is above-and-beyond fine dining, with attentive staff waiting next to you for any minor want or need you may have while dining. The meal and drink descriptions are told with passion and in-depth knowledge that is translated to a most-special experience for either an average person or a foodie.
Without going through the entire 8 courses (and we also opted for the drink pairing as well), I can say that the entirety of the meal was amazing. There were certainly some interesting dishes and drink selections in there that were very unique to the palate. However there were also more common dish selections that were taken to the next level by their cuisine-mastery -- and then topped with a perfect drink to highlight the intricacies of taste.
I certainly have eaten at a lot of fine restaurants around the US (and world), and having said that, I would definitely recommend Commis if you are in the bay area as a delight and treat for foodies and those that appreciate fine dining at its best!
Flavors Abound
Having experienced several Michelin starred I can quite honestly say that Commis is right up there with some that I have experienced. As one would expect the food here is the most important aspect and it is delivered flawlessly. We were lucky to be seated at the Chefs counter so had a birds eye view of how they were preparing the food with precision all overseen by the chef. There was no chit-chatting. It was all about the food and presentation.
Each course is a feast for the eyes as itโs presented so artfully. The ingredient combinations are phenomenal such as the carrot tartare with lime, shaved coconut and mint. Another dish which truly stood out for me was the slow poached egg yolk with smoked dates, alliums and malt. A poached egg will never be the same for me again.
The meal is twelve courses long and slowly builds up, however, we had a toasted buckwheat tea with black pepper half way through which truly helps with digestion, and prepares you for the second half of the meal. The service was impeccable and the wait staff know their foods.
The restaurant is small, nondescript from the outside, yet contemporary and comfortable inside. Highly recommend going.
A Garden of Unbelievable Flavors
This is really comparable to French Laundry in many ways. Innovative flavors, unusual combinations. The restaurant is TINY - only 12 seats + bar seating. They have a prix fixe menu and if you are older, the eight courses are a little much. We were full long before the meal was done. We enjoyed the carrot tartare - a true surprise for the varied flavors (coconut and mint) and the wild king salmon with salmon roe was phenomenal. We did the wine pairing and while it was good and well explained, in the end we wished we had gotten a bottle. Service was attentive and not intrusive. You should be well prepared for the bill -- expensive but well worth it. North of $700.00 for two people.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful experience!
EVERYTHING was lovely - the simple, contemporary decor, the formal, yet friendly service, and the fantastic food! We loved that the chef was astute at organizing the meal so that dishes surprised us with a variety of textures, tastes and temperatures. Attention was also paid to presentation, beautiful beverage pairings, and special touches which personalized our Anniversary celebration. Some of the dishes were so excellent we are still thinking about them and we can't wait to return.
Special note: the kitchen and servers accommodated my spouse's dietary restrictions with more finesse than he usually receives.
Not what I had hoped for
I was very disappointed by the food here. Every dish was beautiful to behold, but most lacked in flavor. The elaborate descriptions were more impressive than the combined ingredients presented. At times we were at a total loss to discover the described ingredients anywhere in the dish. A couple dishes were delicious, but over all the dishes were bland. The gluten free options were almost ridiculous. A tiny slice of radish was the gluten free substitute for crackers in one dish. The restaurant knew in advance that one person in our party was gluten free, so I think they could have done better. In addition, almost all of the food was somewhat pureed or soft like baby food. The service was good and the ambiance okay.
Be the first to ReplyElegant and outstanding experience
I was surprised to read some of the mixed bag reviews prior to my visit and wondered if the Michelin rating did indeed get something wrong, so I went curiosity and suspicion.
My evening was wonderful. The decor and atmosphere of this well laid-out intimate restaurant welcomed at the door. The staff was professional attentive and knowledgeable and they got the pacing just right leaving enough time between the courses.
As with all excellent restaurants the atmosphere compliments the meal and at no point did it take attention away from very delicate dishes. The food was the highlight. The chef has cooked up small creations of art, taste and texture. Clever plentiful and also light. My favourites were the egg and the cod (surprisingly someone thought is was rotten and for me it was just outstanding .. maybe just differences in taste?) Wine paring offers nicely complementing tastes. I enjoyed the blew!
Thank you for a lovely evening. 2 stars are well deserved.
WORST michelin starred meal - AVOID
After a horribly disappointing and expensive meal we wrote this feedback to the restaurant over 3 weeks ago and have yet to hear back....
We dined at Commis Wednesday night and wanted to provide some feedback on the experience. We were in town visiting friends and wanted to go for a memorable meal. We always focus on food when we travel and our friends have eaten at most of the well regarded SF/Oakland restaurants but had yet to try Commis and were excited based on its reputation. While we understand that a tasting menu may have some things everyone doesnโt love (for example I donโt love beets so I donโt feel like I am the right person to judge that dish), it was some of the courses that we thought would be our favorites that proved the most disappointing. After an auspicious start with the crab bite, the oyster tasted a bit odd and the raw fish was not of the quality we expected. Perhaps the most disappointing was the cod. We all love fish and the moment it hit the table we all got that smell of a piece of fish that was too fishy. Cod is obviously not the most high end fish, so we expected if it was served at a two Michelin star restaurant it would be done in a very impressive way. Eating a few bites of it forced one of the members of our party to take leave to the bathroom feeling ill and she could not eat the rest of her meal. The first dessert had a nice sorbet inside but the celery on top was a bizarre choice and was so bad none of us want celery anytime soon. The one dish we thought was excellent was the mushroom one. The whipped potato one was at least interesting bc of the different consistency.
While I am sure you may disagree with us on some of the dishes, we were also disappointed in the service. It was the least passionate service staff we had ever seen at a Michelin star restaurant. Someone would come over and tell you a few things about the dish in a hushed tone. It was like they were reading off a script and the descriptions didnโt seem to tell the whole picture and we repeatedly had to ask them to repeat themselves. To be clear our server was very nice and no one who brought the dishes were rude but we didnโt get the same sense that we usually get in this type of restaurant that everyone is doing this because it is their passion.
We understand it would have been more appropriate to give this feedback following the meal but one member of the party as I mentioned was ill, another had to perform surgeries early in the morning and we had to relieve a babysitter so we felt like we just needed to get home. However having really looked forward to the meal and spending a lot of money on the meal, we felt that it was better to give the feedback late than never.
Definitely worthy of the two-star Michelin rating
Magical night in terms of variety and quality of dishes and service. Now one of my favorite top-tier restaurants in the Bay Area.
And their impressive Japanese whisky selection was an incredible bonus!
