My wife and I attended a wonderful performance of Coppelia at the Royal Opera House last week.
We thoght it would make a special evening to eat in the Crush Room and spread our meal over the early part of the performace. What a mistake we made. In the Crush Room you have to order your meals in advance. I ordered a starter of Brown Shrimps with fine beans, tomatoes and olives. This arrived on a stone cold plate with a pile of shrimps that had been 'thrown' on to a piled mush of ingredients with a sauce squirted haphazardly around the plate. As it was so heavily chilled nothing had any taste apart from the squirted sauce.
My main course was Roast Duck with cucumber mint and spring onion. Again so cold that the duck was just a hard slab of meat, only this time the cucumbrer, mint and spring onion made a solid mush.
For Dessert I had Apple Tart Tatin with Cinnamon Cream. To call this Tart Tatin was an insult to even a third rate Chef. It was a puff pastry case, about the size of a cupcake, filled with what looke like tinned apple - served cold of course.
As you can imagine after this I looked forward, in the interval, to a hot cup of coffee with petit fours. The pot of coffee was tepid and the petit fours two minute pieces of what looked like chocolate brownie.
The meal for the two of us, with a glass of wine each and a bottle of water was 162.51 including service. For that amount of money we could have eaten pre-theatre dinner at any of the local Michelin starred restaurants. Shame on you ROH we will never eat there again
