Don’t go
I’ve just got back from a coach trip, staying at this hotel and I looked in on these reviews and was amazed that anyone thought it was a good hotel. The room that I was given was grubby and still had toilet paper in the bowl. The carpet was dirty, one curtain was literally in shreds and the room was very cold so that I had to drag a chair across the room to sit near the radiator. No suitcase rest so had to kneel on the grubby carpet. All together a dismal room. The food is a hot buffet, read that as lukewarm and pretty awful. I went to bed and couldn’t get to sleep until after one because of the intermittent plumbing noises then I woke up at five twenty five when they started again. I changed my room to a better one and that was ok until the last day when none of my party had any hot water. I would never stay there again, it was the worst hotel I’ve ever been in. It’s in dire need of renovation.

We visited on the 4 day Summer special deal. We had bed, breakfast and evening meal plus a complimentary steam train ride for a very reasonable price. The hotel is a little worn round the edges but has a lovely lounge to sit in on an evening and we had two great singers as well. The views from the dining room are spectacular. Nicely kept grounds to sit in nice weather. Evening meal is a basic carvery with a choice of starter and sweet and coffee, breakfast continental or full English. Staff are pleasant. Not super luxury but comfortable and with its own personality. We have been coming for quite a few years and we are booked for the tribute weekend in October and Twixtmas breaks. We hope to be coming for many years to come.

Two night stay, dbb. Staff very friendly and helpful. Food good and plentiful. Drinks prices ok.The hotel has really been something in its time. Faded now, but clean and comfortable. Would return - the true test!

Visited for our golden wedding anniversary. Health prevented trip abroad. Hotel is tired but a faded grandeur about it. Our daughter arranged bottle of fizz in room. Staff didn’t acknowledge our event lol. Was advertised as 12 bar at night. On arrival informed 11 which was ok. Second night told last orders at 10.10 bar all shuttered up by 10.20. Food was ok for what we had paid although the queue on first evening was way too long. Alas no matter how good the food is tepid not great. It’s hard to keep carvery/ buffet style hot. The hotel is in a lovely location staff could have been more welcoming. Would I return honestly not sure.

Came here on a Groupon Deal, half of the items listed for the evening meal were unavailable and staff unpleasant. Room was fantastic with great views. We were only here a couple of nights the hotel is tired..and it seems staff feel the same way, customer service seems to be a forgotten word..wouldn't return

I stayed at the Cumbria Grand at the end of January. I've been to the hotel a few times now and had always enjoyed my time there. This time I'll start with the positives in that I had no complaints about the state of my room, the reception areas or the entertainment put on which were all good. The downside to my visit this time was the food. As a vegetarian I am used to making do with little or no choice and my first night's dinner was ok. The second night however was a different story. I didn't particularly like the starter option but thought I'd like the main better which was mushroom ravioli, the only veggie option by the way. As the main course is a carvery you have to go up and ask for the veggie option where the server goes to the kitchen and it's brought out to you. Well after a few minutes it arrived a smallish amount of a rather unattractive pile of brown sludge on the plate. As it was quite crowded I didn't look too closely till I got back to my seat where I saw that there was no ravioli hiding in the sauce. That it was in fact a small pile of sauce with a few cut up mushrooms scattered through it. How on earth could any chef serve a guest a plate of sauce for a main course? If something had happened to the pasta why wasn't an alternative offered and apologies made. It shouldn't have been too difficult to make a few other veggie mains. Indeed I ordered from the bar menu. As I was on a coach trip with meals included I was annoyed at having to pay for additional food. I spoke to a duty manager wondering what had happened to the pasta who I later saw about the hotel but received no acknowledgement. A large part of a stay in a hotel is the food.Especially when there are no restaurants within easy walking distance or options of delivery services. I am not a picky eater but have noted before the hotel seems to disregard vegetarian guests. The food before I found reasonable if unimaginative but this time serving someone a plate of sauce for a main astounded me. I had planned to stay again at the hotel in the summer but very much doubt I shall now. I had emailed the hotel my enquiry/complaint receiving no response. I allowed a couple of weeks for a reply before posting this review.

This hotel has a fabulous location and enjoys splendid views across Morecambe Bay. Walk out from the hotel and you immediately come to The Promenade which is the nicest way to stroll into town along the bay front. Initially we joked that the hotel was a bit like The Shining, with its vast corridors and skeleton staff, hospitality these days has its challenges. The decor apes Victoriana in keeping with the hotel’s history, in places a little faded, but most importantly the bed super comfy and a great bathroom with good shower and lovely bath to soak in. Fantastic breakfast and all the staff who are kept on their toes and very busy friendly and pleasant.

We stayed at this hotel for a weekend price very good. We stayed in an accessible room a large room, plenty of space unfortunately is was always very cold, even though the room had 2 radiators which were working. The wet room was also very cold. The water was cold, we told the staff who did something to the bio boiler which resulted in the water being aired only. The food was good and varied but the plates should have been warmed. The hotel in general could do with a general upgrae
Be the first to ReplyLovely hotel but food not great
Lovely looking hotel . Very old loved sone of the original features. Superior room was great. Very clean and spacious. Windows do seem to be very draughty but it's such an old building that you expect this. Staff were pleasant although reception staff were a bit miserable. The downside is the food. It was awful. Very bland no taste. Wasn't cooked fresh. Vegetables didn't even taste cooked. Rock hard. Breakfast not much better. Luke warm. Cheap produce. . Would stay at the hotel again but wouldn't eat there.

They say that you get what you pay for. I got more than what I paid for. Three night's Dinner,Bed&breakfast and a sail on Lake Windermere for a great price. the room was fine for my needs and was well stocked with tea and coffee. Breakfast had good selection of food. My only comment would be to ask the Chef, not to incinerate the bacon as happened every morning. The evening meals was three courses, with a variety of options. Whilst I was obvious that they were short of staff in the dining room, the staff on duty did a excellent job. Well done to all the staff.

This old building needs a little TLC.Stayed four nights on a coach trip. The public areas are in fairly good condition but our stay was spoilt by the room which needed a lot of attention. This was spotless and the beds comfortable but the dark brown and beige decor was depressing. The paintwork especially on the windows was peeling off and there were cracked tiles on the bathroom floor. The curtains were very thin so I woke very early.Blackout linings would help.We had a nice view if you could ignore the puddles and moss on the flat roofs below and the vegetation growing in the gutter.Perhaps we were unlucky with our room as others in our party had no problems but maintenance is important.
The food was excellent and the service good.,with plenty of choice for the main course unless you were vegetarian. There was also a delay in serving the vegetarian meal from the buffet as it had to come from the kitchen.
There were many good points about our stay and we wwould be willing to return
Lovely location
Very happy with our short stay at this hotel. Room, although a little dated, was clean and comfortable. Bed comfi and bathroom huge. Food was very good and plentiful. A good and varied choice on offer. Staff friendly and helpful. Railway station nearby. Lovely grounds. Very homely. Would love to visit again in the future.

Spent Monday to Friday there last week on a coach holiday from South Coast. Angelas Coaches. No one of 28 people on coach was disatisfied. Was excellenr value and had kovely sea view room on 1st floor. with walk in shower and balcony and French windows. Water always hot! Hotel was clean and warm. Staff were great and always helpful. Food and service and choice of food very good. The entertainment provided on two nights was great and much appreciated. Puzzled at some of the comments I have seen. Hardly Hotel's fault if residenr peacock cannot attract a mate! And every where is struggling for staff after pandemic.Saw a lovely deer in the grounds and it had good gardens. Thoroughly reccomend. I am sure that some rooms/areas need work, but both homes and hotels are ongoing projects. a very good experience.

The room was smaller than expected and the fixtures and fittings were dated and shabby including a broken tap. It was poor value for money as I have stayed in much more luxurious places for much less. Some investment is needed to upgrade this hotel. It was our first break together and we were looking forward to a luxurious stay given the price and photos - did not live up to expectations although the room was clean.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful hotel and fantastic staff
We visited a couple of weeks ago as part of my friends wedding weekend. From the moment we arrived the staff and the general manager made us all extremely welcome. The GM went out of his way to move some tables for us to the outside decking area which wasnt currently in use and he was more than happy to do this for us. The food was amazing, the drinks and service were both excellent. The hotel looks fantastic both inside and out, the lobby was our favourite part, very grand! (hence the name!!) We cant wait to come back for another visit and we thank all the staff and the GM for welcoming us so warmly! Highly recommend the Cumbria Grand! well done team.

After reading the most recent review that said that hotel was appalling we were really worried about our visit there.
We booked in with a coach party on 17/6, reception and downstairs were all lovely but bedrooms definitely needed up dating and decorating.
We were there for four days and I must say hotel grows on you.
The breakfasts were very good quality produce and we also enjoyed the three nights three course evening meals which were a choice of different carvery, vegetarian and other choices.
The grounds outside front of hotel could do with a paint and a good brushing but still plenty of places to sit with a pre dinnet drink.
Staff went above and beyond to see to your every need and were all very pleasant.
I didn't sleep very well there due to the early morning call from the peacock who needs a mate
We all really enjoyed the stay and don't listen to negative reviews it is what you make of your tine there. .
Good Visit
Was on a trip with friends, via Caledonian Travel. Hotel was changed, after booking, to Cumbria Grand. As said in previous review, Hotel is ‘tired’ in places but ……… Staff made up for this in all departments. Nothing was a problem. Special thanks to Waitress in the evening. (11/07) who sorted tables so the six of us could sit together. No mean feat in an almost full Restaurant. Food was extremely good, both selection and taste. Likewise with Breakfast. Hotel has some lovely grounds with wonderful views and resident Peacocks. Worth a visit.
Be the first to ReplyA Very Grand Hotel
We booked a Sunday special rate so we were only there for one night on a B+B basis, the hotel is situated in its own vast woodland area with some well kept garden and lawn areas. First impression of the hotel is very grand however a little tired in places.
Saying that though, the Sunday special rate was value for money and we checked in a couple of hours earlier than scheduled which was nice. Our room was on the second floor and had a great view over the golf course and Morecambe Bay. The room itself was clean and well presented, it had a small en suite with an equally small shower cubicle. Teas, coffee, hairdryer etc were all there and the TV had all the usual free view channels.
The hotel has a long history which is documented in the main corridor and by a pamphlet which was well worth the £1 from reception. You can clearly see the hotel would have been some sight in the early 1900’s and an exclusive retreat in this part of Cumbria.
We thought the lounge areas, bar and main restaurant were fine and it was nice to relax for a few drinks after an afternoon in Grange.
The breakfast was excellent (not sure why it’s had negative comments) it was all well cooked, hot and plentiful. The sausages and bacon were really nice as too was the porridge.
We met several people who had been multiple times and the hotel was a favourite with coach tours as there were at least a couple in while we were there.
The hotel is perfectly placed and a short walk into the centre of Grange and a couple of minutes to the Promenade. We took a side excursion to Cartmel (10 mins drive) on the way home and also went to see the nesting Osprey’s at nearby Foulshaw Moss nature reserve (6 min drive) which was excellent.
Would we recommend the hotel, yes we would, would we stay again, certainly and would love to visit in the winter and sit by that big open fire in the lounge.
As I and others have mentioned, the hotel is a little dated in places but still attractive and the staff are lovely so give it a go…
Breakfast
Having just stayed here for 2 nights the hotel, it is in need of renovation the furniture in the bar area is well in need of being recovered and decorating inside and out. On the first day going for breakfast we was stood there for 5 minutes waiting to be seated while they clean a few tables and ignored us until they was told to find us a table on second day went down for breakfast got seated went to get breakfast there was no fruit on the cold table, after that went to hot breakfast bar which was short of mushroom black pudding hash browns so told the waitress who went to get some one to refill them after 10 minutes the chef came and asked what we wanted so told 5 minutes he came back with with hash browns when asking for mushrooms in turned round and said what do they expect coming down at this time for breakfast, we arrived in the dinning room at 5 past 9 as breakfast is served between 8 till 10 i do not think this was late
