I had really high hopes for the drinks and they were good
I had really high hopes for the drinks and they were good but not great. I was expecting really unique flavors but I felt like due to how large the menu was, it sacrificed artistry in the drinks. I also don't think the food was worth it. The service was decent. We asked the waiter questions and he was able to provide recommendations. Overall, it's a cool place (the environment is dark and very much so speakeasy vibes) but I don't think it lived up to the hype.
Be the first to ReplyVisited an old favorite recently.
We went in on a Friday night, earlyish around 9pm, we got lucky, the wait was only about 20 mins. I love so many of the cocktails here, but also really love their classic martini! It's one of the best. Highly recommend the death & co. book as a gift for the cocktail lover in your life.
Be the first to ReplyGreat atmosphere, awesome service.
Bartenders are on point and very friendly. Come check it out!!!
Be the first to ReplyI wish there was a 4.
5 star option, but service was great so I'll round up. My only hesitancy is the price - most cocktails are just shy of $25 and there are a handful of cocktails in the $35-$40 range. And while I can totally appreciate high quality ingredients and the creativity and care in the cocktails...that makes it pretty damn hard to justify more than 1 before dipping out. That said, the cocktails were fantastic. The cocktails came just as described, there were tons of creative options and little unique twists on classics. Also, while our service was as simple as it gets (we ordered one drink, then left), our server was incredibly patient with some picky woman to our left who sent stuff back and kept pestering about what was in her drink and damn near sent a second one back. All while the table to our right was being difficult too. I don't know our server's name, but hopefully he got a cocktail too after those headaches.

Cool and cozy speakeasy-style, make sure you get on the waitlist ahead of time as we had to wait about 1.5 hours on a Sunday night. Wide range of delicious cocktails and some bite sized shareables as well.
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot for groups upto 6 people.
They do take reservations for 8 but that gets too cozy!! Randy is a great server and can help improvise. Even finger food is very good. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible high quality cocktails.
A table of 7, that ordered 2 rounds and every single drink was a winner. We also vibed with the dark, cozy yet edgy ambiance.
Be the first to ReplyThis place will kill you.
... And then send you to heaven. The drinks, food, atmosphere, and service are great. This place is a true cocktail bar. Tiffany is an angel behind the bar, but makes killer cocktails that will send you into the nether realm . I got the Buffalo Stance cocktail. It resembles an old fashion in appearance, but with a nice maple flare. I would highly recommend this to all my bourbon and whisky drinkers out there. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to gain a true understanding between a bar that serves cocktails, and a cocktail bar. Overall rating: A Cocktails: A+ Bartenders: A++ (next level) Atmosphere: elegant Noise level: loud due to everyone trying to talk over each other. Not recommended for those who are hard of hearing. Chance of recommending this to others: 100%
Be the first to ReplyI rarely say this but this place is really worth the wait.
They have the best cocktails in the city. I had a lovely eggnog here around Christmas 2022 and I can't forget it. They also have great desserts, if you have room for one! But do know that you'll have to wait at least an hour, so put your name down and go have drinks at another East Village spot before coming back here.
Be the first to ReplyWe a party of 6.
We went to your restaurant because our NYC friends had been there and recommended us. The host told us for 45 min. Wait and no problem at all! We understand then we had put our name and phone number in. But one of our friend really want to use the restroom. Host not let her go inside and told her to go use dive bar next block! The host he told us that restroom only for customer. I told him that we are your customers too. He said not yet...in 45 min. Omg! This is unbelievable. I worked in restaurants business for 10 years in US and what kind of this hospitality? This is not only what he spoke to us. But yes we decided to cancel our waitlist because he so rude and unprofessional. We walk outside and standing nearby sidewalk and we discussed about we might need to inform their manager. The host, he heard and go to us and said he is the manager. If he is the manager. How come you handled your customer this way. This is so rude. We won't go back there for sure.
Be the first to ReplyPlace is cool but so are a lot of places in NYC.
Cocktails are great but you have to wait outside to get in. Fun to experience it once or twice.

Our bartender was so helpful and friendly. Made the whole experience even better. It was an amazing evening out.

Death & Co is an intimate, dark cocktail bar speakeasy worth checking out.Came by with a small group of six without a reservation after dinner on a Saturday night and luckily were able to be seated within minutes (the place then quickly filled out and a half hour wait). There were a lot of drink options which was great and the inside is dimly lit and sleek place. No one in my party got food, but for drinks, I tried two cocktails. One was just fine but didn't really stand out and the other I thought was great and would love to order again (Airwalk). All in all, cool spot with a vast menu of different, inventive drinks.
Be the first to ReplyTop notch service with absolutely stellar drinks.
Everything from the ice to the garnish is well executed and impressive. The menu seemed overwhelming at first but it's categorized so you can start light or choose something more robust. Try to get in early on a weekday since they don't take reservations. Worth the wait if you're into the perfect cocktail.

I'm pretty sure I saw this bar mentioned in a book, "150 Bars You Need to Visit Before You Die." After my less than stellar experience at The Holiday Cocktail Lounge (reviewed separately), I walked around the corner to give this place a try.I'm sure this place gets crowded on weekends, but I visited on a Monday night, and was able to be seated at the bar immediately. This is a small, darkly lit spot in the East Village that serves creative cocktails broken down by category. Categories include: light and playful (my fave), bright and confident, elegant and timeless, boozy and honest, rich and comforting, and even non-alcoholic. I loved every drink I had here. Each concoction was light, refreshing, tasty. Each had unique ingredients from around the world and across the flavor spectrum. One of mine even had kumquat (seriously!). So tangy! The staff here is amazing. The mixologists are cool & talented. Despite the elevated ingredients and higher price tags (I think the cheapest drink I had was 19 dollars), the staff were interactive, funny, down to earth, and attentive. Including the door folk (hostess and security). In fact, they were so nice, I asked them WHY management would have them standing out in the cold and snow with no protection aside from an umbrella). Cmon management--do better to take better care of your awesome people! There will be a separate email to management coming!ANYWAY--this place is great. Right up there with Goodnight Sonny in my book. I normally write more about the drinks I had and the menu when I review bars & restaurants, but the menu here is so diverse, fun, and unique, it's best to find out for yourself. They have a bar snack menu as well, but I was only there for the libations!Update: The CEO of the company responded to my email about the hostess stand/bad weather situation. He really took the time to address my concerns and hopefully this will translate to a better situation for the outdoor employees. I will be looking out for possible solutions in the future.

Be informed that when you close out a tab to change your card, the system automatically updates your table as available for the next customer. However, they do not inform you on this beforehand. It was really cold outside and my friends were waiting to get seated. We told the waitress to change out our card but she closed the tab, which meant we had to leave the restaurant and the rest of my friends were not able to get in. We asked if they could do anything but they told us there is no other way. Not only have they been unhelpful but also rude! The waitress was nice at first, but when it came to closing the tab, there was definitely a change in their attitude.

Looks nice - but the wait is long and the service less than welcoming. Maybe we caught them on a bad night?
Be the first to ReplyOnce we were actually inside, the cocktails were fine and
Once we were actually inside, the cocktails were fine and the staff was great. However, getting inside was the issue. We arrived at 5:20 pm and were third in line. The door girl told the three couples (ourselves included) that they were experiencing some technical difficulties and would be delayed opening. She asked each of us for a phone number and assured us we would receive a text and not lose our place in line. So, we went a few doors down the street to Amor Y Amargo (which I would HIGHLY recommend) to have a drink and hang out. Maybe 30ish minutes later, I walked back over only to hear her telling some people that the tech difficulties weren't yet fixed, so went back to hold off for a little bit longer. At approximately 7:30, we went back over to Death & Co to find the door girl along with a second staff member outside alone. They promptly told us that it would be a several hour wait because they had just "completely seated" the inside. When we explained that we were third on the original waitlist and had not received a text of any sort, they tried to talk their way out by saying they "were completely swarmed with people the second" the difficulties were fixed. We agreed that we would stand right next to the door and wait for the next opening, despite their many protests and requests that we go somewhere and they "would text" us. They clearly did not want us standing in front of the bar. We waited for about 15 minutes, all the while listening to them lie to people that walked up, saying things from "our wait list is closed for this evening" to "there is approximately an hour wait, we will text you when your table is ready". It took everything I had to not tell these people they were never going to get a text but I knew Death & Co was on my husband's bucket list as he is a cocktail aficionado. As I said, the "long wait because we just sat the entire room" ultimately ended up only being about a 15 minute wait - I am certain that they just wanted to get us away from their front door. But, whatever, at least we got in and were able to check it off the list.I would say, though, there are MANY places in NYC that make fantastic cocktails. Steer clear of Death & Co - they are WAY too pretentious and, perhaps, have gotten a bit too big for their britches. Go over to Amor & Amargo - those cocktails were spectacular. And, of course Dead Rabbit and PDT are pretty famous cocktail wizards, too, and well worth the effort to get in.
Be the first to ReplyReally cool bar in the East Village.
They have a variety of cocktails based on your mood. The inside is super dark and only lit by candles on the tables. You will definitely have to wait for a table, but they're usually pretty fast.

one of the coolest bars I've been to in the city with such interesting drinks. the wait was honestly pretty long (close to an hour) but the cocktails were definitely worth it. my drink had rum, coconut water and ube oat milk and it was one of the most unique cocktails I've tried. their menu is also very extensive and the waiter helped us decide which cocktails were the best for our preferences. overall a very cool experience and would go back!

Finally got a text at 9.30pm. Thanks but I have better things to do.
Be the first to ReplyMore than a cocktail bar, Death & Co is an experience.
The very extensive drinks menu, decent sized food menu, world-class bartenders, and a gothic and mysterious interior combines for an amazing experience that will capture the attention of anyone who comes. There are 6 stages for cocktails that they chose, for different vibes. Although, I think besides the first section, the drinks can be quite varied within a section, and there are drinks that have repeated motifs throughout the sets. The bartenders are amazingly efficient, and great at giving explanations for how things are chosen, and crafted. The most memorable part of my experience was discovering that cocktails could have layers of aromas and flavors. I've always known that fine wine "evolves in the glass," and uncovers many layers of flavors, depending on the quality. I didn't know cocktails could do it, and tbh, it makes sense. There was a theme of cocktails that started out with fruit flavors, then cream and citrus, and then concluded with earth and herbs. Experiencing so many changes of flavors through a single sip was out-of-this-world for me.Honestly all the drinks are good, but I encourage people who aren't normally "whiskey" people to try some of the whiskey drinks, and not just stick in the fruit aisle. The soulstirrer is an amazing cocktail that I still have a huge impression from, since it was just so powerful, multi-layered, and long-lasting.For a quick food review, the buttermilk chicken is not something to miss out on. Finely, crispy chicken with strong buttermilk flavor and dill (?) and some sweet glaze is amazing. Dry aged steak was not really worth it, the flavor is not as cheesy as you would expect from a dry aged steak, so it tastes more like a bland ham-flavored steak than actual steak. And the truffle slices on top are so little that it doesn't make much of a difference. Save yourself some money and order two chickens instead.Spots are hard to get, so if you want one, come extremely early, or put your name down and come 3 hrs later.
Be the first to ReplyMy friend and I came here on a Saturday evening.
The bar opens at 6pm. My friend got here around 5:45 and was one of the first three people in the line. I got here around 6. We got in right away and were seated at the bar.My friend had First Impression and String Theory, and I had Je ne sais quoi. I like my drink. It's really good. Though I'd like to try other drinks on the menu, I have low alcohol tolerance so I only had one drink. We also ordered food - buttermilk fried chicken and tartare. The fried chicken was tender and tasty. The tartare was just ok. The cheese flavor was a bit too strong for me. The service is good.Overall, I like the cocktail here and would like to come back again and try other drinks on the menu.
Be the first to ReplyVery rude waiters, without a soul.
Very fake friendly. Cocktails are ok. Waiters think they are gods and the clientele is a bunch of cows.
