My absolute favorite restaurant! As a vegetarian in NYC
My absolute favorite restaurant! As a vegetarian in NYC there are plenty of great restaurants that I love but Dirt Candy is unlike any restaurant I've ever been to. The food is incredible. The attention to detail of the presentation of each course is amazing. I can not rave about this place enough. Also, the staff is very friendly and informative. The give you a brief description of each course when the serve it. You definitely get your moneys worth. Each course was a good amount of good . They also sneaked in a couple extra treats in between courses. Can't wait to go back!

This is a fun and unique experience! I enjoyed every aspect of the meal but my favorite was the mushroom pastry. The service was good- they were attentive throughout the meal and were good about changing plates in between courses.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious and our server was so attentive.
We had a great corner table and the restaurant was bustling on a Friday night. The tasting menu was strong overall with the onion dish being a star among veggies. Came with two friends for our birthday celebration and the restaurant made us feel special.

Take this review with a grain of salt because I prefer meat and fish over vegetables any day. I have also been to many tasting menus that is not vegetarian or vegan so my expectations are a little biased. Creativity was A+ but it fell short on the execution side. It felt as if they were trying to combine a bunch of ingredients to make it seem fancy and fine-dining, but the unnecessary combo of ingredients made each individual dish overwhelming. I didn't feel full from all the courses and felt that i was still hungry after. Food: There were quite a few amuse bouches which I appreciated throughout the course (cucumber with dehydrated flakes was one). The Yuzu carrot mille fueille cake was super flakey and messy, and the cream was a bit sour. It was a savory dish, which is interesting because usually this concept would be on the sweet side. The portobello mushroom mousse was nothing to ride home about and the texture threw me off a bit. The pea ravioli with feta cheese was the best dish and executed well. It tasted like a cheese ravioli with peas. The crispy broccolini was super salty, and the broccoli became soggy due to the broth. It was like a bunch of random flavors were thrown in. The worst dish in my opinion was the burrata ice cream. The ice cream was not sweet at all and was salty. The cheese did not add anything, and it was by far one of the worst desserts I have had. I believe this place caters better towards the vegetarians/vegans because there are not many (reasonably priced) tasting menus for that demographic. however, as someone who is not a vegetarian, I would not choose this place over a different restaurant's tasting menu.

My partner and I went to Dirt Candy for the first time for their six course Valentine's Day dinner last night. I really wanted to enjoy my dinner. While not currently a vegetarian, I did have multiple periods of vegetarianism in the past and I generally have a lot of respect for people who choose a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. Further, I like the fact that Dirt Candy prides itself on paying respectable, living wages for staff and on not allowing customers to tip. Perhaps my positive attitude and initial excitement made my disappointment greater. While the service was friendly, we found the food to be quite lacking. Most dishes tasted fine, but did not feel special nor like they justified the price ($145 per person, plus tax, not including drinks). The dessert, consisting of eggplant and chocolate with yuzu granita, even though it was visually appealing, was practically inedible. Parts of it were extremely bland (including the chocolate, somehow!), and the flavorful elements did not at all go together. I left my dessert dish almost untouched, and even though the waiter noted this out loud when they took our plates off the table, they did not ask what is wrong nor whether anything could be done to amend the situation. To top it all of, both my partner and I woke up this morning feeling quite queasy and with some indigestion. The meal at Dirt Candy was the only food we shared yesterday, and so we are suspicious that it might have been the cause for our discomfort this morning. As you can tell, we unfortunately will not be coming back.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is fantastic.
I can't believe anyone would rate this place anything less than five stars. I have traveled all over the world and have yet to find a vegan/vegetarian restaurant I have enjoyed more than this place. My wife and I chose to sit at the counter top, overlooking the kitchen. It was enjoyable watching the chefs meticulously prepare each dish. Every course brought to us was thoroughly explained by staff. Every course tasted better than the previous course. The interior also had low lighting, which set off a romantic vibe. I highly recommend bringing your spouse to this place.
Be the first to ReplyWell I had been waiting for a Long time to come here and I
Well I had been waiting for a Long time to come here and I finally made it and man was it a disappointment. The food is so confused . Trying too hard to be smart and pretty , it is instead finicky gimmicky and not enjoyable . Out of the five dishes and two surprises more than half were a complete redo . The flavors were either too strong or just didn't work at all . Most of the dishes were too large as well that by the 4th one you just had a hard time . The dessert was really disappointing , basically tasted a lot like dirt with none of the candy .I was saddened. I really wanted to come out of Dirt Candy totally happy and more then satistfied and instead I will not be looking forward to Returning , which is a real Shame because I am Vegetarian and was looking to flaunt a high end vegetarian restaurant and I cannot honestly do this. The service was good The room was way too loud And the seating was ok , not very comfortable which makes the 2 hour seating feel a lot longer. We all wanted to leave way before the whole thing was over.

The Winter menu this season is out of this world! Run don't walk to this amazing establishment. This was my first time eating at an all vegetarian restaurant and it was everything I could have dreamed of! Thoughtful preparations, beautiful execution, and the wine pairing was not only a phenomenal value, but spot on. All the staff were a joy, explanations, coursing, pace, were all exquisite. The Michelin star is more than deserved. The ambiance was not stuffy, but a nice evening vibe, and to know that they pay their staff well is awesome. I was pleasantly full at the end of the night.
Be the first to ReplySaturday night I had dinner at Dirt Candy.
The following Monday night I ate at the most expensive vegetarian restaurant in NYC for the second time. I'll just say it's on Madison Park - but it was no Dirt Candy. The more I contrasted the two different vegetarian restaurants the more I thought about the value of each place. In my opinion, Dirt Candy just blows away all other plant based restaurants in Manhattan and beyond. Their flavors are spot-on, their presentation is clever and it's a pleasant environment to dine in. This current winter 2024 menu was just FUN and tasty. I don't like spoiling dining experiences for others so I'm not gong to post pics and explain things. Just know that you're not eating animals and Dirt Candy is letting you have some tasty and whimsical fun. The whole staff is an eclectic professional team that displays a level of service of a much more expensive restaurant. Instead of prattling on about the alchemy of Dirt Candy's food, I can only goad you to go with an open mind and enjoy the magic of the food that will thrill your palette. It's sophisticated food with out snobbery. So, have fun, enjoy the food and then spread the word about the friendliest, tastiest and best vegetarian value meal in Manhattan. To Amanda, Jackie, Mark and all the creative staff behind the scenes, thank you for feeding us food that doesn't take a life. It's not hyperbole to say that what you do is important work.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my top places in nyc! Reservations: Yes definitely
One of my top places in nyc! Reservations: Yes definitely make some. We came a Tuesday night (after snowfall) and it was packed at 7:30pm. We had a table but the counter seemed pretty cool too, they could see the chefs in action. Food: As a vegetarian, this is one of the holy grails of fine dining. Each dish was carefully thought out, and we even appreciated the (free) extra courses. Each dish was different (and I will say if you like spicy heat food you won't get that here, but each dish is tasty with different flavor profiles). And don't let the size fool you, we were stuffed by the 4th plate! Loved that the last dish was dessert as well, was a great way to end the meal. Service: amazing. Not only does the staff check in on you frequently but they also explain each dish as its coming out Overall, definitely recommend checking out, especially if you are vegan/vegetarian!

Dirt candy doesn't need another great review but it is going to get one from me. The experience was phenomenal from the first to last dish. Didn't know what to expect but went here on a recommendation. The food is innovative and flavorful. I am not a vegetarian but love vegetables. For those who are skeptical you don't miss meat or fish at all. Service was great and we were shocked at the end of the night to find out it is not a topping restaurant. Not only wonderful food but great service This is value for your money.

The menu was incredibly interesting and surprisingly delicious. The pacing between courses was just right and all of the staff were so friendly and welcoming. There were some courses where we felt there could be more salt but other than that the concept truly blew us away overall.
Be the first to ReplyDirt Candy was one of the best vegan/vegetarian meals I've
Dirt Candy was one of the best vegan/vegetarian meals I've had from coast to coast. They offered a $95 pre-fixed menu of 5 course (which really were 7 courses since they brought out a couple of dishes that weren't on the menu) - this was a great deal since it also included gratuity. Loved how different kitchen staff members (I'm just guessing here) would come out and explain each dish to us as it were presented. A nice, and cozy space located in the East Village that we would definitely revisit if ever in NYC again. All the dishes were great but my favorite was the crispy butternut squash and gravy - really reminded me of fried chicken and gravy!
Be the first to ReplyMust try once for those who love vegan fine dining.
If You go with a companion, you both have to order the same prefix option, cannot mix and match.
Be the first to ReplyThe staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
I was impressed with the flavors. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants. Very unique wine pairings. I loved their vegetarian take on fried chicken.
Be the first to ReplyThis has gone absolutely downhill.
I went 2 years ago and the food was sublime. Every bite was superb.Fast forward to yesterday. Food was dreadful. Every dish that came lacked inspiration or creativity. It was mediocre at best The pizza for example had a soggy crust and loaded with greasy mozzarella. If I wanted this generic pizza I would go to 99 cent pizza. The other dishes were similar though not as bad. Generic food that lacked quality. It wasn't terrible just the food was something I would find in a very casual establishment. Also a lot of the dishes were swimming in salt. Service was decent so no complaints there.
Be the first to ReplyIt's not easy to be impressed in a city like New York.
Dirt Candy delivers on all fronts with exquisitely prepared dishes that take you on a culinary journey through plant based dining. Each plate is a visual masterpiece beautifully prepared. Some dishes are so tiny they'll leave you wondering if you'll need to stop for a second meal on the way home. But fear not as this journey comes full circle and you're left not only feeling fully satiated, but in total awe. The service is as warm and gracious as you would hope. Dirty Candy is quite simply a triumph.

First time I dined here I was blown away by the mushroom buche de noel. Had the chance to dine in again tonight and was really impressed with the butternut KFC & frosty dessert. The cooking here is so fun to me I'm looking forward to my next visit.
Be the first to Replyinsane.
life changing. i want to eat there every day of the year and then some. AND i'm not even vegetarian or vegan!
Be the first to ReplyHad a lovely table by the window for the winter vegan
Had a lovely table by the window for the winter vegan tasting menu with wine pairing. Food and wine were both fantastic--especially loved the Kentucky fried butternut squash. My only qualm was that the sour notes in the radish gift course and the rutabaga gnocchi were a little too strong for my liking. Clinton, Michael, Nazif, and Brian delivered excellent, friendly service. Hope to return for the next seasonal menu!
Be the first to ReplyWhat was once an exuberant celebration of all things
What was once an exuberant celebration of all things vegetable has blossomed into an exquisitely polished, talented display of them. All dishes, whether subtle, chili peppered, or variations between the two consist of multiple, balanced flavors, well-executed. Chef Amanda Cohen and her talented young team have obviously thought and tasted and tested. Beets that do not blast a one note sugariness, but display a breadth of flavors; fried butternut squash prepared to make you forget its fried chicken inspiration, accompanied by a rich gravy made of kabocha squash, served alongside a creamy, mild yet flavorful slaw made from spaghetti squash--it goes on and it's all a mind-boggling taste delight. And it's all dirt cheap.
Be the first to ReplyDo you hear that sound? It's me, and that sound is my soul
Do you hear that sound? It's me, and that sound is my soul ascending after every first bite of each dish at Dirt Candy. DC's been on my to-try list for a long time now, but none of the more recent menus have really piqued my interest as much. I saw the brand new Winter '23 menu, and every single dish sounded incredible, so I booked a seat at the bar for the following day. I ordered a glass of the non-alcoholic Muri Passing Clouds, which was surprisingly refreshing, but still reminiscent of a slightly sweet & dry white wine. I definitely tasted the honey and fruits. I'm on the hunt for a bottle now! STANDOUTS: The beet eclair was just absolutely incredible and I could have eaten like 10 of those. I wish I could have ordered more! I was also super impressed by the potato-focused dessert course. Every component on the plate was delicious, and the potato caramel was so perfectly sweet with just the right hint of salt. The Kentucky fried squash was also incredibly good as well, with a super savory kabocha gravy, adorable little biscuit, and some of the best whipped butter that's ever graced my tongue. THE REALLY GOOD: Everything else on the tasting menu, plus the two gifts from the kitchen, were so good as well! The rutabaga croissant-esque gnocchi reminded me a lot of sinigang, and the picked radish app with freshly shaved horseradish was like eating a really good poke or tartare. The onion pizza was also so tasty--loved the layered, different preparations of onion and the seaweed caviar. I don't even like celery, and the celery dish was delicious too! I honestly have nothing bad or even a little negative to say about Dirt Candy. Every dish was a home run and I wish that all vegetarian dishes were this damn delicious, because honestly? I didn't miss the meat at all. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for future menus, because this one was seriously good. Probably my favorite tasting menu I've tried thus far.
Be the first to ReplyThis place has been on my list forever and I can finally
This place has been on my list forever and I can finally say it's worth the hype after checking it out last week. They only serve prep-fixe menu with 5 courses (add'l 2 complimentary) for $95. Mushroom mousse crêpe cake was the most impressive one. I could barely taste the mushroom (which is a good news for me) but the flavored mousse in a soft texture. Kale pasta was amazing too. The "sausage" made of tofu was so delicious that I can't tell that was a vegan dish. Dessert was another highlight. Mustard sorbet was a bit spicy but was well offset by the sweetness of caramel apple and pudding.

Truly some of the kindest most welcoming staff! We had subway delays getting there and showed up an hour after our res, and they were so understanding and had kept our table for us. Throughout the meal they were amazing and super kind! The one vegetable showcase for each dish is a really fun way to dine. Very exciting and unique restaurant! And not very expensive given what you get (and considering it is a no tip restaurant).
Be the first to ReplyI couldn't believe my tastebuds! All of the dishes in the
I couldn't believe my tastebuds! All of the dishes in the tasting menu were so beautifully and thoughtfully crafted, it truly felt like a creative, delicious "vegetable centered restaurant" as opposed to just labeling it as "vegan food." I could go into so much detail describing all the taste experiences of the different dishes, but that would be a whole dissertation. All i have to say though is that they make you question everything you ever thought about vegetables and their flavor profiles. Corn can now be corn mousse, tomato can be tomato fruit leather and cake, zucchini can be a soup dumpling, and cucumber and dill pickle (meringue) can be a dessert. But don't be afraid-- your eyes will be opened by the culinary magic happening here. This is an amazing experience for any special occasion, and totally worth the price. Plus no tip required (written on the menu), only tax, as they pay their staff fairly without relying on tips. Amazing establishment that I hope becomes an NYC icon!
