Dooky Chase Restaurant New Orleans Reviews from The Last Year
I finally got a chance to swing by and try this staple.
What holds me back is the hours as they are mostly visitor/tourist hours and not working hour friendly. We made reservations but came a little early and were accommodated. One thing I would say is service is a little slow. We sat at the bar while waiting and the bartender served another couple before us which set the mood a little off but they made up for it. The waitress also moved a little slow so have a little patience when visiting. The food was really good and honestly what we came for anyway. Everything was fresh and made with love. I'd I get a chance to visit again I surely would.

Great Evening
The food and service were both incredible. The dining area was beautiful and all employees were friendly and professional. Anybody going to New Orleans need to make it a point to eat at Dooky Chase.
Ms Leah is smiling down at her beautiful legacy.
Amazing service from genuinely great people who love what they do. Food so delicious you'll be dreaming about it for the rest of your life.

I would give the place 5 stars if it wasn't for the bartender with an attitude and I did not receive the complimentary bread. The place was nice, food and service was excellent. We had the gumbo, fried chicken meal with Mac & Chicken Creole which included jambalaya and shrimp. The bread pudding is one of the best I've had in NOLA and felt light. The rum punch was way too sweet but nice drink if you like sweet drinks.

Visiting Dooky Chase's Restaurant has been on my bucket
Visiting Dooky Chase's Restaurant has been on my bucket list since I was 13 years old and watched the Princess and the Frog for the first time. I'm 27, finally made it to NOLA, and made it my mission to dine here. My experience was nothing short of what I'd imagine. It was absolutely brilliant. I made reservations for my husband and I two weeks in advance, which I'd recommend. We visited for brunch on a Sunday and I don't think we'd had gotten a seat if we didn't have reserved tabled. Not without a lengthy wait. The entrance and waiting area showcases the restaurant's rich history, the walls adorned with news paper articles, awards, and photos of celebrities and politicians dining with the owners. Even if you have to wait for your seat, you'll find it's easy to be distracted with all the portraits and readings available. We were greeted by our very friendly server who brought us crispy, buttery, golden garlic bread. I ordered the famous Red Beans and Rice ($14.95) that came with 2 pieces of fried chicken and paired that with the recommend wine, the La Crema Pinot Nior. The pairing was excellent, and my main dish was heavenly, the blend of spices a magical delight. There was just the right amount of sausage and rice. The fried chicken was fantastic! Beautifully crunchy and full of flavor - I could have easily eaten twice the amount I was served. My husband ordered the Shrimp Clemeneau (shrimp sautΓ©ed with garlic sauce, peas, mushrooms, and brabant potatoes, $18.95). If you like butter and garlic, this is the dish for you. While we both found it a little overwhelming, especially towards the bottom of the dish which is drowned in the sauce, everything above was delicious. Wonderful flavor and a very unique blend of seasoning. There potatoes were roasted perfectly and the shrimp was delightful. Of course, we couldn't leave without trying some sides and dessert, especially since we'd travelled from so far. We tried a cup of Creole Gumbo ($7.95) that we both LOVED. By far, the best gumbo we ate during our entire stay in NOLA. The Stewed Okra and Jambalaya ($4.95) were equally as delicious. We ordered both dessert options, Praline Bread Pudding and Peach Cobbler. I honestly couldn't pick which I favored as both were out of this world! I highly recommend ordering both! A couple tidbits/recommendations: Please make reservations, especially if you're visiting on a Sunday. Also, the restaurant is not in the French Quarter, or anywhere touristy. We chose to take an Uber from our hotel. You can also take the bus if you have the time and/or understand the bus routes. There is a dress code which can be found on the restaurants website. It's also plastered on the host station. I will 100% be returning to Dooky Chase's if I'm ever in the city again.
Friendly and historic
Fabulous fried chicken in a friendly atmosphere of locals and tourists. This felt like a part of real New Orleans culture.

Came here while visiting New Orleans with some friends and had to try this spot after hearing many great things about it... and it did not disappoint! Got a lunch reservation at 2pm on a Saturday -- highly recommend getting a reservation as it gets very very busy. We arrived early but were told that we would get seated right at our reservation time. Service was great, however, we did have to wait over 45 minutes for our food to arrive, which is probably the longest I've ever waited. Luckily the food was absolutely worth it! Got the signature fried chicken which came with three pieces of their creole seasoned chicken and a side of mac and cheese. Accompanying the chicken was a very small side of pickled kale salad which complimented the richness of the fried chicken and mac and cheese. Everything was absolutely delicious... the fried chicken was outstanding! Perfectly seasoned, juicy and crunchy. I also got the Madisonville Mary (aka their version of a Bloody Mary) which was fairly spicy and quite delicious! Definitely made waiting for my food a bit easier. Delightful experience, despite the long wait time. Highly recommend a try if you're in New Orleans!
My wife and I recently dined here.
We both enjoyed our meal. I had the red beans and rice which came with two pieces of fried chicken. The chicken was excellent. My wife, a New Orleans native, said the bread pudding was the best she's ever had.
Absolutely amazing food and history.
This exemplifies home cooking. PLEASE make sure you have the gumbo and fried catfish. You will NOT be disappointed!!!
Excellent food, great vibe.
This restaurant is about great creole food and civil rights history. The current owners made the rounds to all the tables in our dinning room the day we were there. They are restoring the room on the second floor that was used for civil rights action planning by leaders including Martin Luther King, Ralph Abernathy, John Lewis and many others. They are planning to have the room ready for public viewing by Juneteenth 2024. I had the seafood platter and it was delicious. When our waitress saw me taking a picture of my wife by a manikin in full Zulu Mardi Gras dress, she offered to take a pic of my wife and I together! I appreciated that and took her up on her offer to be our photographer. I was too full for dessert!
My favorite NOLA restaurant.
Beautiful dining room, gorgeous art, amazing food and service. Six days of restaurants, and this was my favorite. Will return.
A fine experience
The formal dining room is elegantly set, the white linens contrasting with colorful paintings lining the walls and two elaborate Mardi Gras costumes in the middle. We had the famous fried chicken and the seafood platter, both done just right; even the stewed okra was good. A wine suggestion was listed with each dish, so we had splits of Prosecco, an excellent choice. Service was very professional and friendly.
Legendary Restaurant Serving Well Established Classics
We arrived for our lunch at 11:25 AM for an 11:30 reservation. We were seated after waiting in line for other to be seated ahead of us. We were seated in a French revival interior room in mustard yellow with white trim and multiple colorful paintings. The chairs were comfortable and also mustard yellow with the tables covered in white tablecloths. The glasses and flatware are standard restaurant supply items. The wine menu is small but reasonably priced. The lunch menu has a selection of soups and salads, sandwiches and main courses. I had the Creole gumbo and the red beans and rice which comes with red beans and rice and 2 pieces of fried chicken. You to get the choice of white, dark or mixed. My wife had the 3 pieces of fried chicken. Dooky Chase is known for their fried chicken and it is very good. The red beans and rice were very flavorful and was seasoned very well. It is the best version of red beans and rice I have had. My wife had mustard greens as a side. These were also delicious. The gumbo had a medium dark roux, chicken, shrimp and 2 types of sausage. I found it very tasty. Its price is a little expensive for the amount served when compared to other gumbos in New Orleans. The weight staff was attentive. We enjoyed hour meals. If you have not been you should go at least once.
Should have been better!
We were excited to eat at this restaurant steeped in tradition. Sadly, our meal was not what it should have been. Stuffed shrimp were good but served on a bed of cold fried potatoes. And the red beans and rice were served at basically room temperature! How do you not keep red beans piping hot. The server did ask if we wanted more but by then we were half way through the meal. But she could have offered a dessert for our poor experience which would have been a kind gesture that left us feeling like they cared. But no! I doubt they even read their reviews as the place is very busy. But there are WAY better restaurants in New Orleans and I would not recommend this place.
wonderful food in a lovely setting
this one had been recommended and we couldn't agree more. Terrific food. A surprise were all the paintings, artwork and photos, including one that showed Obama. This restaurant is a bit outside the main stream but totally worth going to. You must have reservations. Our service was impeccable
Poor reservation system
We tried for weeks to get a reservation. Almost every day the reservation calendar was unresponsive to getting a time, whether it was first of the day or last of the day. So we drove to the restaurant and asked for a table for two. We were asked if we had a res and said no because it was impossible to get a res using their online system. The hostess explained that it was not possible to get a res more than 7 days in advance and if the system was not responding to requests for a res, that meant they had none for the day. Very poor and confusing reservation system. While speaking with the hostess we noticed a half dozen tables for two were set up but not being used. We wonβt bother coming back to Dooky Chase restaurant.

Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
