Great food, poor surroundings
Food was fantastic and the service was great too. Steve came over to explain 3 of the dishes himself. The overwhelming elephant in the room letting down Steve's otherwise incredible experience is the very drab building/decor. It was a strange experience having to go into the building from the back (there's a note on the front door) and the walk around isn't pleasant as you have to walk around a run down building. I was sat in a lower ground floor which has poorly applied wallpaper with patch up work, a living room lamp and some very tiny tables. I would like to experience Steve's cooking again but it would need to be at a new site or after a refurb. Unfortunately I am reluctant to recommend it to anyone else dispite the photos of the food I took doing a great job of selling it.
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful flavourful menu
My wife and I really looked forward to our visit to Eileen’s again. The menu proved to be an adventure and we discovered attractive dishes packed full of flavour. Service was good provided by young servers learning their trade. We really want to encourage and support this wonderful enterprise. Intending only constructive comment may we suggest investment in soft furnishings/ carpet to reduce noise that sadly spoilt our evening and perhaps lighten the wall coverings.

This is a dining experience as it should be. Great tastes and flavours - gently challenging the diner to eat something different.
Be the first to ReplyStunning Meal
Had the pleasure of having dinner with my wife at Eileen’s this evening. The food was stunning, and the service was excellent, the music was 70/80’s disco which I loved. We shall be returning for our wedding anniversary in Sept.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food & service, decor need improving
We visited Eileen’s as a group of 4 and overall thought it was very good. The food itself is absolutely excellent, the flavours were amazing, the presentation was beautiful and they created a vegetarian version of the menu for us. The service was also really good with friendly, knowledgeable servers. The only downside is the decor - it doesn’t match a restaurant of this quality and so the experience doesn’t feel as special as it does at other restaurants. The tables were wood effect plastic café style, the wine menu was a basic laminated bit of paper and the 1 toilet was very basic. Overall I can’t fault the food or service at all, but the other little details need improving because they let it down.
Be the first to ReplyFirst visit but definitely not the last
Having moved from Kent (being spoiled for quality restaurants and knowing the area for 40 years) to Hertfordshire (knowing nothing about the area’s restaurants or where to look) we came across Eileen’s because it was close to us but also have fantastic reviews. Well, to those who have left less than 5 star reviews should be ignored. Having eaten at many tasting menu establishments, this was up there with the best. Amazing flavour and textures in every dish which were delicious and obviously well considered. Every course was brought to our table by one of the chef brigade and explained in a way that was more proud of what they had cooked and not because is what required in today’s modern world. What I also thought was a nice touch, Steve Barringer also brought two of our dishes to our table and after having a chat, it was clear to see the passion he has for his dishes and what we actually thought of them. Changing his menu every month clearly excites him and his team and it shows in what they deliver. We can’t fault our experience and is genuinely and new found favourite. For a small restaurant that has a limited number of tables, we are now one of their customers that hopes it can get a table every month. Thank you to everyone at Eileen’s that made our night a special one.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, terrible dining room
Firstly, I have already tried to contact the restaurant by leaving comments on their website but never got any response. Ate here last year and the food was great. 7 course menu with paired wines. Would absolutely recommend this place based on the food alone, however, we were sat in what appeared to be an added on room with the ambience and finish of a greasy spoon cafe (down a few stairs at the back of the main restaurant) Walls were dark blue but had white PVC doors (keys still hanging in the lock) white fuse box and plug sockets with terrible wallpapering around them and spotlights hanging out of the ceiling. Nothing pictires or anything on the walls and they had those cheap up lights (£11.99 from Argos types) as lighting, one of which was half falling over. Infront of what looked like an old entrance off of the high street, was a coat stand wrapped in fairy lights. They obviously prefer the back entrance where you have to walk past industrial bins from the other businesses nearby! The tables are white plastic wood effect and the wine menu was laminated and peeling at the edges. Also the restaurant logo on the menu looked blurred (I know this is really minor and some of these things may seem harsh but it all adds up to the place looking shabby) Service was good, not great. Wine should be poured at the table from the bottle, not brought out from the back in a glass. Choice of music was a bit odd... 70's disco if I remember correctly. Like I said, food was great and no complaints. Where we were seated would stop me going back for fear of being sat there again. Would definitely recommend people ask when booking that they are not sat here!
Be the first to ReplyNice but…
My husband and I visited Eileen’s for a special pre-Christmas dinner. It goes without saying that the food was delicious with exciting flavour combinations and unlike some taster menus, the portions were generous. However, we couldn’t wait to leave. Our table was the only two-person table in the room, with two other tables of four and one table of eight. It was LOUD. I appreciate it’s Christmas and people were out celebrating, but it was so noisy we could barley speak to each other, so we spent a lot of time just waiting for our next course and couldn’t wait to get out of there and leave all the noise behind us. It ruined our evening because despite having nice food, we couldn’t chat about it and enjoy it together. We didn’t ask to move because the room with other diners had loud music coming from it, so there was no point. I would recommend anyone thinking of Eileen’s for a romantic dinner to book during less busy times because the acoustics do not allow for a quiet, peaceful dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyCome on Eileen’s
I went to the restaurant last night and whilst the food was good 4 stars the service in my opinion was poor. Here is why I say that: We arrived early for our reservation we sat down and ordered a couple of glasses of wine waiting for our other guests to arrive. They arrived a few minutes late. We ordered the 5 course menu with accompanying wine. I had not finished my original glass of wine however the fist course arrived with the appropriate wine. I feel the staff could have waited until I had drunk my wine. The second course arrived quickly after the fist I had not finished my first course or finished my wine. I asked the staff to slow down a little to let me enjoy my meal and wine. The staff said service would slow after the third course. I asked again for them to please slow down. I guess I am not a quick eater. The third course arrived with wine again I had only just put my final mouthful into my mouth and just managed to finish my wine. There was no time for me to enjoy my meal. There was a gap after the third course thank goodness. The pace soon picked up again and the meal was over I was in the taxi and back home before I had time to think. I am of the opinion that I was eating and drinking as fast as the chef could cook. I thought that the chef should be able to cook to my eating and drinking speed and not the other way round. This was not an enjoyable experience. On a separate note the toilets were really really really cold. I went to the toilet to see if I could get a break from eating and drinking at the speed of light. The food was it enjoyable? I have no idea I did not have time to taste it.
Be the first to ReplyAnother amazing meal
We have visited Eileen’s several times and it is always our first choice for a special occasion meal. We took some friends with us last night, and they were very impressed with their first visit - I suspect they will be back! Steve is always so friendly and welcoming - he has an absolute gem of a restaurant, with amazing staff, and we are very fortunate to live within 15 minutes drive. Steve’s menu surpasses some Michelin starred restaurants we have eaten at, so fingers crossed for the first star, which is so deserved. Not long, surely?! We will be back again, that us for sure.
