Make sure you book in advance!
Maria is an absolute gem! We visited Enoteca Maria whilst holidaying in New York for my husband's 50th. We have friends who are currently living in NJ so booked months in advance for this dinner to be able to meet up with them. A very short walk from the Staten Island ferry, this is a great location to meet with friends. You really do feel like you are part of the family, with hugs, new nicknames and stories abound. Food was naturally excellent but I was absolutely stuffed very quickly. This is a very tiny little place with limited opening hours so you have to book well in advance. There aren't many tables so it might feel a little close for some people, but that's part of the atmosphere.

Delicious! You do need a reservation to eat there though. The place is quite small and itโs almost fully booked. The menu is tasty and authentic. Definitely worth a try!

Be the first to ReplyWhere the Flavours & Tastes of Nonnaโs Recipes of The World Come Together
It is all about the food here. Delicious food & cooked by nonnas of the worldโ Fun! Great service! Quirky decor! Great place to get together with friends & family & enjoy mouth watering home style authentic recipes from all over the world. Good wine list too! We loved our time here!
Be the first to ReplyNonnas of the world.. More like out of this world
What can I say! One of the best meals out I have ever had, homemade comfort food, you will not leave here hungry! A wonderful gem that is an absolute must if you are on Staten Island

We all give Staten Island a hard time about not actually being a borough. And for the average New Yorker or tourist, there isnโt much to the place besides a fun, free ferry ride. But somehow I dig deep enough into the internet to find Enoteca Maria, or Nonnas of the world, a wonderful little treasure located in the snubbed borough. Nonnas of the world is the brain child of owner Joe Scaravella, who actually works at the restaurant. One of the OG nonnas, Maria Gialanella, walks around the restaurant giving you the softest, warmest grandma hugs and telling you stories of her native Italy in beautiful broken English. While the concept started out strictly as Italian nonnas, grandmothers from all over the world serve up comfort food, using recipes handed down through their families. The night we came, we had Haitian ratatouille by nonna Kay, as well as a bento box by the Japanese nonna. We also had meatballs from the original Italian menu. The meal is preceded by this wicked tasty focaccia bread with pickled veggies. Of note: the menu and the nonna who is cooking rotates and can usually be found on their website. Sometimes the schedule changes unexpectedly. There is always an Italian menu available regardless of the starting nonna. Countries I saw just browsing the site include Sri Lanka, Peru, Trinidad, Bangladesh, Puerto Rico, Turkey, and more. The restaurant is small. Acoustics are terrible, but what are ya gonna do? Reservations highly recommended. Call the number on the site. Iโm pretty sure the owner took my reservation and said, โsee ya then, sweetheart,โ which I loved. They are open Friday through Sunday with meal times of 2:30, 5:30, and 7:30. There appears to be a good wine list, with great descriptions, but we didnโt partake. The site is about 3/10 of a mile from the Staten Island ferry terminal. Itโs cash or Venmo only and Venmo does add the three percent (or whatever it is) fee. For the large filling meal we had, what amounts to a three course meal, and a couple large bottles of sparkling water, it was about a 100 dollars before tip. Is this the best food youโll ever have? Maybe not. Is it an experience youโll never forget? Definitely. Take the free and romantic ferry ride over to the bullied borough and check it out.

Make reservations in advance for the best food I've ever had (except maybe when I was in Italy). This is a fabulous restaurant that will be taking off like a rocket since People Magazine did an article on them. There is always Italian food on the menu thanks to Nonna Maria, the resident chef. She's everything you imagine about an Italian Nonna! We happen to have 2 other choices the night we went, a Nonna Marval from Azerbajan and a Nonna Yumi from Toyko. We chose Nonna Yumi and weren't disappointed. One of the best meals we've ever had, no lie.

Absolute amazing experience and dinner. The Nona greeted us and the service was 5 stars. Food was excellent and served with love. Highly recommend this for a great dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic, intimate and rustic - great ingredients for an experience not just a meal
This is an experience, not just a dinner. For out of towners from Australia like us, it was both a journey (on the SI Ferry) as well as an opportunity to meet the famed Nonna Maria. The narrow small dining space is consistent with the home-style intimate nature of the food - on this evening we had the option of Mariaโs offerings or Japanese dishes. Be prepared - the servings are really generous and only the hungriest will survive through to dessert. I really liked the wine options too - some interesting โvillage-styleโ pickings amongst the flash labels. Book early - thereโs only a narrow window to get in.

Went there yesterday with my daughter, son in law and 3 grandchildren after hearing about this restaurant with cooking by grandmas on uk radio. Horrible, wet, cold day but well worth the trip from manhatten. I emailed Jodi from the UK and made a reservation for lunch, hoping it was as good as I'd heard.
The, without exception, lovely, friendly and warm staff couldn't do enough to make us welcome, including the lovely and charming Japanese Nonna making some delicious dumplings for the 2 older grandkids. All of the food was exceptional and we cannot wait to come back with the rest of the family.
Grazie tutti!
Mike and family.
Warm and Welcoming
Joe was so understanding and gracious when we had to cancel our original reservation that I knew this was a restaurant I surely wished to patronize and support.
On our visit my wife, being gluten free ordered the bronzini while I ordered the rabbit which I do make myself from time to time. We both were definitely pleased and appreciated the presentation with accompanying organic vegetables. The bronzini was fresh, with a crispy skin and came easily off the bone while the rabbit was seasoned delicately with onion, tomato and wine to emphasize its' sweetness. You can tell the kitchen had years of experience and maturity. Maria made the rounds for a friendly meet and greet and photo op.
Note: the gluten free desert cake was the best my wife has ever had.
Plus: ever changing ethnic 'nonna' menu
This restaurant is filled with joy, kinetic energy and good food and should not be missed ( easy walk from the ferry ).
So much amazing food!
the food just kept coming, and coming. All of it delicious. I don't normally do left-overs, but I made an exception here. Drug those bags home on the ferry, subway, and through the streets, all the way back to Brooklyn. Worth it!
Be the first to ReplyValentine;s Day waste of MONEY!!
Went there for the SECOND time and walked out saying ...." Why did we come here again?!"
I don't think I will be going back unfortunately.... I understand it was Valentines Day and I shouldn't expect a lot.... but coming from a #7 rated best Italian food in SI.... I expected better!!
I am a Italian born. with Italian parents that cook REAL ITALIAN FOOD, not the Italian by name second or third generation Americanized individual.
This whole scam about having Italian Nonni behind the kitchen cooking is BS ( didn't see anyone but an Egyptian old lady and an older gentleman... NO ITALIAN NONNI) , cause when you get served Sauce that taste like it came straight from a jar, I'm sorry... you don't deserve my hard earned money!!
My kids 12 and 15 hated their pasta (Lasagna and Ravioli with HORRIBLE sauce)... so imagine that.
I order the Braccioli and they tasted like they were tough as leather, from a few weeks ago, almost choked bad ... embarrassing!!
Too many Horrible things to list....I can go on and on.
Do yourself a favor... want good Italian food do your research, go to NYC better chance there of getting something descent at least.
Never again will I go there....
Absolutely delicious!
What an amazing meal we had at Enoteca Maria! The Nonna for the night of our meal was from Turkey. We ordered off both her menu, and the regular menu. Everything we had was amazing! The Lentil soup, the Firinda Sebzeli Tavik, the Peperoni Ripieni Piccanti, the lasagna, the ravioli, all scrumptious! Our waitress was wonderful, as well. Highly recommended!
Be the first to ReplyGreat night at a restaurant
Great night at a restaurant I have read about for years. The guest momma was from Argentina, and we were a group of 10. We agreed a number if appetizers, Italian main courses and Argentinian main courses.
Service was great and the food was fabulous. I would highly recommend
We have eaten here twice,
We have eaten here twice, not times excellent. This night they had a Jewish and an Italian grandmothers cooking. Best knish I ever had! Everything else was beyond good. It is a small restaurant so make a reservation you will not be sorry. There is a parking lot near restaurant. It is not far from SI Ferry.

We have always wanted to go to the Nonnas restaurant - loved the concept of Italian grandmothers cooking their favorite recipes for a restaurant. We finally got there and had a wonderful time. The portions are generous, the food delicious, the staff are the best - friendly, fast and efficient, the surroundings are fun and it was an overall great experience. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyLove the Nonnas and the Staff
Our first time here, Saturday early dinner, very clean, wonderful staff. The food was very tasty. Our nonna was from Argentina, what a gem. And, because my 13-year-old grandson stood and watched her cook, she acted like she was his nonna, making eye contact and smiling while she worked. The wait staff was very helpful and made suggestions (and they were excellent suggestions). The menu changes with the different nonnas. We ordered family style, splitting each into six servings. We loved all of the six dishes. Definite great experience. Beware: CASH ONLY.
Be the first to ReplyThe sweetest thing
We took the ferry from manhattan, to discover the surrounding area in Staten Island. It was lunchtime. There were no restaurants that looked cosy, healthy and full of real food. Until we passed this sweetest place. We didnโt need to think twice, this was the place we were craving. We were served by the sweetest waitress, who took all the time we needed to browse the menu. Also, being European we were wining and dining instead of eating the american way (sorry dear North Americanโs). The food was great, the ambiance good and as mention the staff was prefect. And we didnโt have to pay Manhattan prices. We left even happier than we arrived.
Thank you guys!
