Exceptional food, delightful service
Thanks so much for accommodating our large group (eight). We all enjoyed the food, as well as the elaborate, but friendly and delightful service. Those of us who had the chef’s signature dish (octopus) found it extraordinary. A number of our group said your restaurant was the highlight of their trip to Europe. Essencia is just exceptional!
Be the first to ReplyNice restaurant, great sommelier!
Nice restaurant with welcoming staff. We booked ahead from London before travelling as it had good reviews. We did the 7 course tasting menu which was nice, not wow but nice. A couple of stand out dishes - the langoustine was one, and both the beef and the lamb were cooked to absolute perfection! The service from the sommelier was exceptional, a lovely man and very knowledgeable. We enjoyed our evening, the food was good and we left happy.

I have been in few michelin star restaurant and this is was one of the best of them! I loved that the chef worked in front of us and the open kitchen is great idea in general. The service was great, the dishs was very good with very thought and with great taste. And the prices were very fair.

Hmmm... Is it wrong to give such a restaurant only a 3/5? Well I think so based on the price range and expectation of a 1 star Michelin. Some reviews rate this restaurant as the 3rd best in the city. That I don`t understand. The welcoming at the door was a bit odd. The restaurant are very nice and the tables are spread around in a nice setting. If you want to have a view towards the kitchen there are only a few tables that have that. In my opinion these are the "only" options in such a restaurants. We had the 7 course menu with wine paring. The service are a bit casual. To be honest we did not have any highlights from this menu. Everything tasted good but non of the dishes blown us away. same with the wine parings. Everything seemed lack of inspiration. It was ok but nothing to remember. For over 200.000 forint for a couple we expected more and we have had much more from a 1 star before.

My friend Mathias and I have the world's smallest food club. We decided to visit Budapest and try some of the best restaurants over there. I can say it did not dissapoint! The first impression is everything, and impress it did. A beautifull setting with close connection to the kitchen so you could follow what they are doing. As a chef I find it amazing to learn from others and get inspired. For starters I ordered the Hungarian waterbuffalo tartar. Beautifull plating, extremely tender, a great combination of acidic, sweet and salty flavor. This is a must try if you love tartar. The most important thing is the maincourse, here I decided to go for the Deerloin with wild shrooms and dumplings. The dish was looked aesthetic - a well executed plate. The deer was perfect cooked, tender and tastefull. Combined with the crispy topping, the amazing sauce, dumplings and mushrooms.. I loved the explosion of flavor, it was the best deerloin dish I've had in a long time. Last but not least, excellent service - I loved the history behind the restaurant as well as the service. Thank you for a great time! Best regards, Rasmus

We were looking forward to this Michelin experience and not disappointed at all. Special mention to the octopus with chorizo and the deer saddle. And the service was impeccable.
Be the first to ReplyFeeling like in Portugal, eating like in Hungary. Amazing from start to finish.
If you enjoy a cozy vibe, feeling like eating at the shore of a town in Portugal, this is the place you go! I am really sad that we only got to eat a la carte in Essencia at lunch during our short stay in Budapest, because I believe we would've been in for a treat eating dinner with a menu put together by the Chef. We will most definately come back to Essencia in the future to do so! In the start of our visit to Essencia, we felt the vibe almost immidiately. And if we hadn't, the small appetizers would help to get in the vibe - it felt (and probably was) intentional to combine the flavours of the appetizers, that made us feel even more by a shore in Portugal. Also combined with the storytelling of the couple, Tiago & Eva, that I think is very well suited for what expression and impression they want make with they restaurant - from decor to service to choice of food on the menu, and so forth. I think they succeed with everything they've tried to do. We had a three course lunch (different starters and mains, same dessert) and they were all great. I had white fish for my main and it was like smooth and buttery - something I would be able to eat every day for a year, if I were challenged to do so, and I would enjoy it every single day. Our waiters (two ladies) were very kind as well. Not many tables were occupied so we basically just had to make eyecontact with one of them and they were there in an instant (not that we had to more than once, since they were very aware of everything going on at all times). Thank you for a lovely stay that really kicked off our Budapest 3-day weekend. You've left a very positive impression!

A wonderful experience and great food at Essencia. The highlight of our trip to Budapest, the Mangalica was my favourite dish. The service was very good, the staff were helpful and welcoming. In summary, excellent food, wine and service.
Be the first to Reply"essencia® RESTAURANT Tiago & Éva": Jing & Jang in Budapest...
In Budapest, "essencia® RESTAURANT Tiago & Éva" offers the best of Portuguese and Hungarian cuisine side by side, in a high quality, intimate setting, with professional service. Portuguese cuisine, with its focus on the "fruits of the sea", and Hungarian cuisine, with its focus on the "delicacies of the land", are presented in harmony with each other, with some "cross-over" of the "fusion" cuisine, but both retain their own character. At our birthday dinner, we sampled the degustation menus of "home" (Portuguese) and "at home" (Hungarian). Both were very tasty and enjoyable, with the Portuguese menu featuring mackerel ravioli and aged beef ribeye, and the Hungarian menu with duck cvekedli and venison spine with forest mushrooms and dumplings standing out from the field. The welcome bites were a pleasant way to set the mood, and the truffle flavouring, which could be ordered separately, added quality to our "dinner tour". The quality of the ingredients, the perfect harmony and orgy of flavours and colours, the high standard of service, showed that the "essencia®" deserved the Michelin star.

5 Stars throughout ! Great service and food, and bonus points for the octopus rice - which was by far and large the best we had in our life ! thank you !

We visited the restaurant in December 2022. We had tasting menus with wine pairing. The food was exceptional, the wine pairing very well chosen. The service was excellent, the decor and ambience very pleasant. I recommend!

I love both kitchens so I chose the mixed tasting menu with wine paring. The sommelier was excellent, I found wine pairings were exquisite and enjoy the knowledge shared with me. I found some of the portions a bit on the small size, but had a wonderful experience overall.
Be the first to ReplyGreat lunch
I really enjoyed my solo a la carte lunch at Essencia. The service and attention to detail were immediately Michelin-worthy. The dishes and little playful amuse bouches were nicely passed, and the portion sizes were generous. The white chocolate dessert was the absolute start of the meal for me, while the main of cod and caviar was a bit of a disappointment and lacked the depth of typical Michelin dishes. However, the waiter seemed grateful for my feedback, and service overall was cordial and quick, if not the warmest. Finally, the juice pairings were excellent - just note that different juices have different prices.

A fantastic tasting menu with my friend especially enjoying the quail dish. Service was a bit slow compared to previous experiences but a positive experience overall The juice pairings were also extremely well-matched to the dishes

We really loved the spring menu, so we had to try the summer menu. I absolutely loved the beef tartare and the lamb palóc way.

We were here three times because love it very much. It is our favorite Michelin star restaurant in Budapest.
Be the first to ReplyEverything was really tasty and the staff is very friendly
This lunch was a wedding gift from a couple of friends, and we did not before we arrived that it has a Michelin Star! Actually, my husband did not know until we part from our friends and I told him because the only indicator was a sticker next to the entrance. Before we got anything, they brought a small plate with some sort of fried mash potato wedges as complimentary gift from the chef! We ordered appetizers, I had the Caldo Verde potato soup, and my hubby had the onion consommé(soup) with black garlic and cottage cheese (túró). Both of our bowls arrived without the actual soup, the waiters poured them into the bowls after they told us what we get and what is in each food(they did that with every course). As main, I ordered the lamb sided with green peas and caramelized yogurt. The meat has a very thin slice of bacon on top, and it was really tender. The caramelized yogurt was exquisite, never tried anything before! My husband ordered the mangalica(pork) with coriander „açorda”(kind of a bread pudding with coriander) and clams. It was really good, looked like a thin slice of steak. For dessert, I tried apple pie with rhubarb. It was that kind of deconstructed food where they use all the traditional ingredients but in a different way. They used bow fresh apples and cooked and mashed apple puree for the filling, with fresh rhubarb, rhubarb puree, "biscuits" made of pie crust, white chocolate pieces, and a really airy white stuff that sadly I don't remember what was made of. But tasted really good :D Hubs ordered the "Azores" pineapple with basil, which was a basil sorbet with thinly sliced pineapple shaped like a rose and some sort of bready-spongey crust pieces. Both of our desserts came with edible flowers. After everything, we got another complimentary gift, four little pastel de nata, and we ordered coffee to pair them with. The whole experience was really pleasant, the staff was super friendly, helpful and kind. We had a bottle of white wine fro the four of us, it was really fresh and tasty. Also still and sparkling water and lemonades. Great experience, highly recommended.

Solid 1 star Michelin experience- we loved the concept of the Hungarian and Portuguese mix. Prices are definitely good for the experience, location, food and service. The wine pairing was decent for the price and we guess that’s the maximum the restaurant can charge their customers… but maybe an optional upgraded flight would be a great addition.

Fab experience - food, drink, staff, ambience were all excellent. Had the 6 course tasting menu with wine pairing. Particularly loved the clear passion of all of the staff

Culinary experience of the year. The lunch tasting menu was amazing. The staff fantastic we got an explanation to each course on the menu. We had the mixed (Hungarian or Portuguese or mixed) and it was amazing. The various flavors in each dish are something for it self. Highly recommended by us. If you love food and you are visiting Budapest you must! try this place. Even got a Michelin star (well deserved). Price range is ok considering it has a Michelin star and is located in the center of Budapest. Absolutely loved it
Be the first to ReplyWhat an amazing experience
We jumped out of hotel in simple clothes to walk around town. Then we saw this restaurant. It offered only degustation meniu for about 75euros (without drinks) and we thought okay, why not. They also offered a vegetarian degustation option, which was really nice. We looked quite poor and not ready for this Michelin star restaurant. We actually saw it in some of the workers eyes. I could say, even though there were some free nicer tables to sit us, we were given a table by the door. Whatever, we didn't really care. The first impression was not so nice - somelje was really unfriendly. He came and I asked something about the meniu - he didn't mention that he is somelje. He got quite frustrated and said, not in a nice way, THAT HE IS ASKING ABOUT DRINKS AND HE IS SOMELJE, like we are some stupid young tourists with no class or money. Well, he was wrong about that. At that point I was humbled and got quite sad:) the more interesting thing is that SOMELJE didn't came back to our table to introduce the wine or something. And one time he brought chef's compliment - so are you a waiter, somelje, or what? Anyways, I would recommend to change your attitude. Just because we were dressed casual, doesn't mean we don't tip or we are poor. FOOD - - - - - - - - Food was amazing. It was so interesting, unique and filling. We loved every bit of it. The quality and taste of food is very good and price is reasonable for what you get. If you want an amazing experience - this is the place. You can see that the Chef loves this place and his staff are working amazing then introducing the dishes. Staff were quite attentive. Especially our waiter and hostess. She was really nice, informative, friendly and helpful. I would like to personally say thank you. You make this place feel very professional. We had one more misunderstanding. This left me feeling scammed. I thought that maybe, just maybe this place wasn't looking at us as stupid tourists. But I think in the end, they did. I came privately to the hostess and asked her if I could leave a tip for her on the card. She said yes. I then said that I will enter the tip and pay for it and the guys will pay for the food. When she came to the table, without looking at the check I asked her to enter 35euros for a tip, I paid. And then I looked at the check - there was a service fee added, about 40euros. That is absolutely fine with us. But why not mention it when I was talking about the tip? Was it okay to take 35euros knowing that there is a service fee in the check as well? I felt so stupid and yes, I asked to get the 35 euros back, cause we didn't think that the service, all in all, deserved 75euro tip. I felt. Well. It was sad. Because if we hadn't noticed it in the bill, nobody would have told us. I would recommend this restaurant for a nice dinner. It was a good night. I would recommend to dress nice for it and double check the bill.
