This is a great take out spot.
Located on Geary blvd between 5th and 6th Ave, this is an old school Taiwanese/ Chinese restaurant with an expansive menu. We ordered a sesame chicken, dry fried string bean ( Szechuan string bean) and asked for no spicy, west lake beef soup, Yang Chow fried rice ( combo of shrimp and bbq and egg fried rice), shredded pork with dry bean curd, zha jia mian ( not sure what English is but it's the bean and pork and cucumber dry noodle). And the favorite is Shanghai Style Meatball in clay pot. I have attached photos. Best part is the food is not oily or overly salty. Owner is really friendly and we can support local restaurants. On weekends they have the traditional Taiwanese shaobin youtiao do jiang ( fried donut and soybean brunch). They are take out only for now as of Sept. 16, 2021. The paper menu prices in my photos are out of date, but even a couple of dollars more is a great deal!

March 15, 2023 - Five Happiness is now closed, after close to 50 years of business! Bittersweet for sure. Thank you to my grandpa for starting ไบ็ฆๆจ, thank you to my family for all the "blood, sweat, and tears" plus the relentless hours spent into the restaurant, thank you to all the devoted and loyal customers, and thank you for all the memories that I am sure all my siblings, cousins and I will forever remember.

came here a week before it closed and will never forget their youtiao with soy milk (got both the sweet and salty versions). it was so authentic it really reminded me of taiwan chicken wings, string beans, and beef & noodle stir fry were all great but my absolute favorite were the green onion pancake and sheng jian bao. they're so good i've dreamt about them before happy for bill and his retirement :) thanks for all of your hard work, we are going to miss your food!

The doors have closed and the lights are off. After 48 years of providing Taiwanese food in the Inner Richmond neighborhood, the owner decided to retire. With the changed dining and travel environment, keeping the business going no longer was a viable situation. My friends, family, and I will miss their old school traditional Taiwanese menu, from lunches, dinners, and weekend specialty brunch meals. I am glad to have enjoyed your food and family like atmosphere both in dining there and getting food to go especially during the past three years. To Bill, enjoy your retirement and many thanks to you and your parents for serving the community, especially the Richmond District for so many years.

One of the few restaurants in the city with Taiwanese influenced dishes. Good portions, consistent quality, friendly staff. Take out only for last few years (due to covid). Closing permanently this March (exact date TBD) so enjoy while you can. Sad to see another great restaurant close.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is quite good.
It's Taiwanese and the best day to go is Sunday for their rice balls. The prices since covid have gone up but the food is still good. There are definitely a few favorites like the combo cold dish appetizer, and other dishes. Being associated with a Taiwanese family, we tend to frequent this place often. There are a few other spots but YMMV.

Its front may not look like much due to the bright orange tile and prominent sign advertising Mandarin cuisine, but you can relax knowing that this unassuming, time-honored Chinese staple is a favorite of culinary legend Cecilia Chiang. Inside, you'll find a warm and inviting dรฉcor, featuring white linens and a crimson carpet; this is the kind of space that lends itself well to group celebrations. Although there are many items on the bewildering menu, the friendly and knowledgeable wait staff is extremely helpful in pointing customers in the direction of the restaurant's signature dishes. The beautifully bronzed Peking duck, the slippery hand-cut noodles studded with savory moo shu pork and crunchy vegetables, and the meltingly tender Shanghai braised rib topped with a flutter of green onions are some of the standouts on the menu here.
Be the first to ReplyGoodness this place is part of my childhood BEST memories.
My parents have followed the owners from their previous location! Then I went from the time I was in my mothers belly, and continue to now with my own children. Many great family meals and memories! Bill is outstanding! He always made sureMy parents tried new dishes and has always treated us like family! To my son he is now uncle bill! Dishes: I loooove them all! Talk to Bill if you want to try a new dish, he will guide you! Food, service is great! We drive from the opposite side of town to pick up food!
Be the first to ReplyThe taste very terrible๏ผI've never eaten something so bad.
I told them not to add too much vinegar, but these soups are like dropping a whole stick of vinegar inside. No food is good

TLDR: Take out only currently, they take card, and is an institution. Staff is really endearing and the food is authentic.Their Taiwanese breakfast and dishes are the most authentic I've had in the Bay and is the closest taste of home I can get.Highly recommend their soy milk, won ton in hot sauce, you tiao (chinese donut), salty fan tuan (salty rice wrap with chinese donut in it) and more. We come here as much as we can (one time they wouldn't sell me the soy milk because it was made bland, and that really speaks to the quality standard they hold their food to), and I've ran into so many people every time we're waiting for pick up that are regulars and drive from all over the Bay to order from here -- that's how good it is!
