Gorgeous interior mediocre service
Made a Sunday brunch reservation to celebrate our anniversary. Food was okay but there was a long wait for our entrees, live jazz combo was a nice touch. Waiter was not attentive and there was no acknowledgment of our special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful restaurant, tasteless food
Beautiful restaurant with a history. Warm ambiance but the food was unfortunately disappointing. Overcooked NY strip, hamburger not available and the beef wellington was tasteless. However, the waitress did het absolute best. The kitchen has some gatching up to do. Not Michelin worthy at all.
Be the first to ReplyDon’t go to have a good meal, only for the atmosphere
The positive : great interior, great music, good service. The negative: the food. The pork pie is a joke. Bland and contained a bare minimum of meat and mushrooms. The burger : overcooked. The fried chicken : too much batter and chicken was dry. Seriously ?
Be the first to ReplyNot worthy of a Michelin rating anymore
We had high expectations considering this is a Michelin rated and a revered restaurant with a pedigree. Unfortunately, that status did not hold up with the new management for us. We were greeted by an older woman, who was very polite and professional. We came for an early dinner Monday night for a birthday celebration. We were seated in a booth, which helped a small amount from the blasts of cold air that coming thru the restaurant every time diners opened the revolving door. It was very uncomfortable at times. Our waiter, Brandon, seemed to be engaged but it soon became apparent that he was either new or overwhelmed, which regardless of the reason should not have interfered with our service. We started with a couple of items from the happy hour menu. (the HH cocktails are a scam- you pay less because you get less- not fair!) We ordered another beer and it was twice the size! Our classic cocktails were perfection! The oysters arrived and he put the tray down and left. We waited and called him over explain the 4 varieties on the tray. I've never ordered mixed oysters and not told the varieties. He was in a rush. They were delicious and well presented. The parker rolls were buttery and tasty. The caesar salad $18 was awful. It was not traditional and was bland. There was so much radicchio, which was so bitter that we could not eat it. The she-crab soup was average but had no additional crab meat sprinkled on top, as we've had at other places. At $23, was not worth it. We ordered the pork chop $58, strip steak and onion rings $16. The strip steak was so small for $71, we could not understand how they can justify the price. My son who had been to the restaurant before even commented that it was much smaller than he'd seen his last visit. Highly overpriced. Since our waiter never came over to ask how our entrees were, we did not get the opportunity to question him. When he finally did appear after we were done eating and waiting for him, he apologize saying he was "slammed with a big table". Regardless that is no excuse and did not absolve him of his responsibility to us. There is a hierarchy and it failed us. We did see a man who appeared to be a maitre de passing our table a few times but he never engaged us or inquired about our dining experience. BIG MISS doing his job! However, I do want to mention the young man who cleared our dishes, cleaned the crumbs from the table and filled our waters. He was friendly, attentive and did his job excellently! We ordered the baked alaska and asked that candles be put on it. We really did enjoy this dessert and it was just heavenly. This was the highlight of our dinner. What sealed the fate of our review was how we were treated at the end of our time. Our waiter came over and just tossed the bill in the center of the table and walked away. No thank you or any courtesy comment like Happy Birthday! He immediately went and attended the table right behind us. We were so shocked that we paid the bill at the bar and left. On our way out, one of us did tell a young woman at the hostess desk that service was terrible and we could not give them a glowing review. She did not seem interested. Based on our experience, the food and service is not the same restaurant that many of the older reviews are based on. Gage & Tollner have slid. The recent reviews echo the same lackluster service/food as we experienced. The food is not phenomenal to warrant these prices and there are other well deserving restaurants worth exploring in Brooklyn! I hope we caution other potential diners. We should have heeded the recent reviews here and other websites. The new management has work to do.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced for the experience
We went here with another couple a few days before New Year's eve. We were excited to go due to all the good press we had read about the restaurant. We started with drinks upstairs at the bar- expensive but cool atmosphere and great drinks. Fir the restaurant, service was ok, atmosphere is good. Table seemed too simple for the price (no tablecloth, average dishes, silverware not changed after appetizer). Food was just average and not in line with the price. Steak goes by weight and cost $145 and had too much garlic on it. The best part was the fresh bread and dessert. It's not a restaurant we would return to.
Be the first to ReplyNo B-Day Celebration at Gage
I took my husband out this week to Gage & Tollner to celebrate his birthday. It was an excellent meal for each of us in a lovely setting. So why was I so disappointed at the end of it. They ask online to tell them if it is a special occasion, which I did when making the reservation as well as reminding them during the meal. I was told the waiter was aware of it. But there was absolutely no birthday acknowledgment, and I sat enviously as another table enjoyed a birthday candle and song. As we left, I complained to the waiter, who said we would have had to order dessert to celebrate an occasion. No one had told me that. And the manager intimated that I was trying to get free dessert! After spending $180 for two, this was upsetting. Couldn’t they have lit a candle and put it in a cookie, or sang sans something sweet, or told me the policy so I could have ordered something. Both my husband and I would have appreciated the celebration. Henry Taplitz
Be the first to ReplyThis long time Brooklyn staple has reopened and it is terrific.my wife had steak and I had pork pie but the hash 5 stars
This place has been closed many years but has been reopened and food is awesome. Service is adequate but the food made it up. The original oysters were delicious and other types are available. However the veal shank is only available at night but the pork pot pie was a worthy substitute. Parking lots are nearby but expensive do consider public transportation. I will return fir the veal at night sometimes soon

Had a reservation here for early dinner (5:15) on a SAT. Waiter Brian was great. Let me start by saying their prices are quite high. Examples: $21 for a bowl of watery she crab soup with a teaspoon or two of crab (we live in SC and know our she crab soup well). The T-bone steaks were $4.65 per oz - a 28 oz steak was $130.20, of which at least 6 oz was bone. $20 for a martini. Total bill for 4 before tip: $486. I suspect the restaurant owners are doing quite well at these prices.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Setting, Pleasant Ambience
Gage & Tollner is a very pleasant restaurant. The decor is gorgeous, the vibe is old worldly. The menu is quite extensive. We had the parker house rolls, hash browns, mushrooms, shared a 12 oz striploin, a cheese plate, some cava to start & a bottle of pinot noir, The parker house rolls were devoured in seconds. The stripling was not a particularly tender cut. We are perplexed as to why G & T do not offer small cuts of meat if only one person at the table wants red meat. The T-bone & the bone rib eye are only available in the 32 to 36 oz range. These must be shared by 2 or 3 people. Service by Teddy was knowledgeable, kind & accommodating. He gets top marks. The sommelier was helpful. And don't get me wrong, we had an enjoyable night. What they do is solid. It just didn't hit it out of the park for us.

We came here after going to Sunken Harbor upstairs. They were so kind and accommodated us with a table despite the fact that they were busy. We weren’t too sure what to expect of the food and drinks, however, we were hungry and it was convenient. All of us ended up being so glad we tried the food as it was soooo good!! Everything was well flavored and the food was fresh. They also had a variety of options for vegetarians. The dessert was also very good. Ambiance: The ambiance feels very much like a Brooklyn upscale restaurant. We sat by the window and it was a perfect seat to people watch. Service: All the wait staff were kind and friendly. We ended up being one of the last ones there and they never made us feel rushed.
Be the first to ReplyGood food in a time capsule
Last time I was at G&T was about 30 years ago. It’s trip back in time. Gas light are still in place, walls Coveting and mirrors all look like the have been there 100+ years. All that said, the question is about the food and service. First, service was great attentive prompt and polite. The food ranged from very good halibut fand baked Alaska (which I don’t think was really “baked” It was hit with a torch), to so-so creamed spinach (the Palm’s is better, creamier, a touch of nutmeg and cheese), very good “hash browns” which were served in a block of thinly sliced potatoes. The fried chicken and hush puppies, after a big build up, were average. Didn’t try the steak.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible experience
We were seated in a booth with a young family in the next booth. They had an approximately 2 year old child who spent the entire meal banging on the divider between our tables, screaming, crying and melting down. The parents did not remove him from the restaurant and this continued for the whole meal. We finally complained to the manager and the mother came flying over to our table attacking us. She screamed that I was a “childless Christian conservative” which is not true. I am actually a Jewish liberal democrat with several children and 3 grandchildren! Not that that matters but I said I have children and if they acted the way her child did, you take them out for not only the sake of other diners but also for the child! The woman went back to her table crying and the entire restaurant staff went over to console her! No one apologized to us. We had to leave and we’re unable to even finish our meal. I have never had such an awful experience at any restaurant. It was a $700 meal! Also food was not even that great. NEVER going here again!!!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
I was excited to try this restaurant with my friends. It has such an interesting history. But first things first. The decor has old world charm, the atmosphere is great and the service is impeccable. I had the halibut which was excellent but my husband can’t say the same for the steak. It was horrible with more fat than meat and chewy. He has had better steaks elsewhere in restaurants that are not known for steak. As far as calling this restaurant a steakhouse is concerned, it does not come up to par. If we were to go back, it would not be for steak. That being said, again, the halibut was excellent, the shrimp cocktail and clam kimsino very good, along with the Parker House rolls but they need to work on getting steak right.

Friendly and precise personel. We hade several starters that wa very high class. We ordered a medium rare t-bone for main course and it was Well done and testless, after som diskussion We for another steak that was tasteless aswell.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing and expensive meal
Very disappointing meal for a special family birthday dinner celebration. Very average service and the most disappointing was the terrible steak for 4. Almost no meat on the bone with lots of tasteless fat. Steak was luke warm and just not very good for the price. Go to Peter Luger- so much better (although not as good as it used to be). The sides were decent and one in our party got the fried chicken that was actually good. The Cesar salad was well done. Overall the place is overpriced and just not that good for all the hype. Took numerous tries to get a table. Just not worth it especially at these prices!!!
Be the first to ReplyMade up for our wait
We had reservations, but were not seated for about 30 minutes-45 minutes. Were directed to the bar. And management gave us free drinks. Then our waiter brought free appetizers to make up for it. So all was forgiven. Beautiful , historic spot.
Be the first to ReplyA Memorable Dinner
We dined on a recent weeknight. I enjoyed the clam belly appetizer. Got the Parker House rolls to dunk in the yummy butter sauce. Then we both had fried chicken and shared a side of Hen of the Woods mushrooms. The chicken was as fried chicken is supposed to be. Crispy breading and moist meat. It came with very tasty cole slaw, much better than any store-bought slaw. The accompanying cornbread fritters are just fried bread, a variation on hush puppies. We finished our meal with the baked Alaska for two. A big plate of scorched merengue arrived at our table , with vanilla and chocolate ice cream and a few dried cherries underneath. We struggled to finish the fun dessert. The room is a bit noisy, but also with ornate decor steeped in history.

My girlfriend and I arrived for our 5:15 reservation on a Wednesday. We were warmly greeted at the front door and promptly seated. Our server, Alexandra, introduced herself and helped us with our drink selections. My girlfriend ordered a Pink Lady; I ordered a Sidecar. Both were excellent. We each had a cup of she-crab soup, which was surprisingly light but delicious. Each was accompanied by a small vessel of sherry, which we were free to pour in however much we cared. We started off lightly, then added more as we finished the soup. Tasty, tasty stuff. We also ordered a small plate called "Devils On Horseback": bacon wrapped dates stuffed with a smoked almond. There were only 6 served; a bit pricy for the quantity, but O.M.G. the quality was out of this world. Still, I wish a couple more could have graced our plate. But that's just greed on my part... For dinner, I ordered the Golden Tilefish, which was served with collard greens, cabbage, and braised pork belly. When the plate was set down in front of me, Alexandra poured the most delicious pork broth around the plate to accentuate all of the flavors. Beautiful presentation, and one of the most memorable plates of food I've ever had. My girlfriend ordered Roasted Chicken Breast, which was served with mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus. She let me sample some of it, and I can attest that this is the way all chicken breasts should be served: flavorful, tender, and juicy. Alexandra had also presented us with a complimentary glass of white wine (I forget the variety, but I think it was a chablis. It was very good). For dessert, we took a light route. Janet ordered a fresh mint ice cream, and I ordered a rhubarb ginger sorbet. Both were excellent finishes for a great meal. Would we return? In a heartbeat! It'll be part of our itinerary during our next trip to New York City!!

Late Sunday night reservation with friends. Our waiter recommended we split one of the large ribeye steaks which was perfect for 3 of us. Added onion rings and a salad for a tasty meal. We were one of the last tables to wrap up for the evening, and the staff was gracious about letting us finish our dessert and coffee without pressure to leave.
Be the first to ReplyThe Oysters Rockefeller are not to be missed!
OK - I know, it’s crazy. This is a chop house, and yet I really, really like starting off with the oysters Rockefeller and finishing with the scampi. Particularly when there’s a seat at the beautiful marble bar. The bartenders are knowledgeable artists, it’s great to watch them do their thing.

The food and drinks are delicious, its our second time here. Service was great. my husband and I enjoyed ourselves. A very romantic setting. Will return again. Located in a very nice area in Brooklyn.

Great atmosphere, lovely place for a special dinner! Some minor hiccups with food (incorrect dish arriving) but would still highly recommend. I had mentioned in my booking this was for a special occasion but this was not acknowledged so would recommend contacting them directly beforehand if you’re celebrating an occasion.

I adore Gage and Tollner and have been there twice. The drinks are fabulous and our entrees were superb. We had the strip steak, chicken and pork pot pie and all were excellent - and perfectly prepared. We especially enjoyed the Parker house rolls as well as the baked Alaska - don’t miss it (or any of the desserts). The pastry chef is on the short list for the 2022 James Beard award and it shows. All the desserts looked divine. It’s tough to get a reservation so plan ahead.
Be the first to ReplyA Disappontment
We were so looking forward to this restaurant, but were sadly disappointed. Service was painfully slow with an hour wait between courses. They made a mistake on one of the dishes. The chicken was dry with a watery sauce. Two members of the party came down with stomach problems after eating the shrimp scampi. It is a beautiful restaurant and the drinks are good, so just skip the food.
Be the first to ReplyA Very Happy V Day
The historic restaurant closed on Valentine’s Day 2004 just 2 years after I moved over the bridge, and I regretted not making it there. Upon re-opening in March 2020, I had a reservation but then the pandemic hit. Since then either I couldn’t get a reservation when I wanted one or I got one but my plans fell through. So when they sent me an email offering Valentine Day reservationx, I grabbed a table for 6 and made a party, inclusive of two gfs who I was the wingman for when they met their bf’s 7- 8 years ago, and my friend Jazz just to spice things up. One of my gf’s is a pre-pandemic investor in the establishment and happily reported making a profit.
The very famous restaurant in Brooklyn did us proud; they sat us in the middle of the main dining room at a round table on an oriental rug. The restoration of the interiors is near perfect; an old fashioned steakhouse for hipsters. And the food was exactly what one hopes for particularly for the elevated price point; everything had a unique twist.
The $16 sturdy cocktail menu complimented the food; I had the very excellent Sazerac because, well because I love Sazerac and I do not get it in these parts in the quantity and the quality that I like. Then we had a funky Gamay followed by the quintessential Valentine’s Day wine: a sparking red. For apps the table shared the chicken pate and the roasted tomatoes. They put an extra layer of fat on the top of the pate: amazingly good. My entrée was the fried chicken which was juicy and had a hint of cinnamon, with a creamy kale salad and hushpuppy with a chipotle mayo; exceptionally tasty The basket was large so I took half of it home. For dessert we shared the baked Alaskan which had a hint of mint. The wait staff attended well to the table and helped keep the party going.
