Probably a reasonable vegetarian restaurant at most !
No way close to any Michelin Star restaurant at all, we were being serve mostly vegetarian dishes with taste all similar among those dishes. Presentation of Sashimi is so plain. Even their fish was so overcooked. Services were great but food quality is really so so. Probably one of those restaurants once get a star then forgotten their basic. Very disappointed here !

2 Michelin stars? Check.
Gorgeous plating and fresh, delicious food? Definitely.
But what makes this experience transcendent: Chef Matayoshi's humor and personality! Perhaps it's because he hails from Okinawa where people seem more happy, "open-minded" perhaps. Whatever the reason, my husband and I truly enjoyed being in his company.
Best meal of our trip
This was our favorite meal and evening of our week in Tokyo and Kyoto. In a quiet, beautiful corner space in Gion, the staff works diligently to present a wonderful overview of Japanese food using impressive, unique ingredients. The chef is fun and we had a blast picking the right sakes to pair with the food. They even had a helpful book they would break out occasionally to explain what we were eating. Everything was very delicious. Would easily go back again.

We had lunch at Matayoshi where the delicate flavors of Kyoto cuisine were highlighted. Upon reserving the table, we were offered four different price tiers ranging from approx. $75 (USD) to $200+. (Per the restaurant chef, the different prices reflected the type and quality of ingredients used, not necessarily the number of courses.) We opted for one of the middle tier priced lunches only to find out that the middle-priced tiers were not available. We had to choose between the least expensive and the most expensive of which we chose the least expensive.
The restaurant is a simple 8-seat bar with standard minimalist decor. Although I had read that the chef spoke English, he did not speak to us for most of the lunch. We were attended to by a younger "sous chef" who was kind and attentive. Assisted by both a picture book and Google Translate, we were able to discern most of what we were eating. Lunch consisted of about ten thoughtfully prepared, subtly flavored courses. They were all delicious. One of the final courses was a box with a dozen or so small intricate bites where the chefs' efforts and creativity were on full display. Was the lunch worthy of two Michelin stars? Not really sure. Certainly one-star worthy, and at $75 USD (not including drinks), it's a good deal. I'm happy to have eaten here; however, were I to visit Kyoto again, I would be interested to try other Michelin restaurants.
Superlative experience
Wonderful from start to finish. Course after course of top quality food, sometimes served in a more traditional style and sometimes with an unusual twist. There was a standout beef course and a magical shellfish course. Some great sushi and sashimi too. Intimate setting sat up at the bar. Staff were friendly and patient with non-Japanese speaking guests. There was a convivial atmosphere between the staff. They work together in a tiny space and it's fascinating to see how they work together under the guidance of Matayoshi-San to produce this feast. Matayoshi was very friendly and, unlike any European Michelin starred restaurant I've been to, personally attends to the patrons to the extent that he waves you off outside when you leave. Truly fantastic!
