Great dinner & experience!
This was an exceptional meal and experience. Just simply enjoyed everything about it. The food was incredible. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyInteresting food but a stressful experience.
We were a company of six people having a dinner at Giro Giro Hitoshina, December 24th. Overall the food was good - some dishes more delicious and some less. Unfortunately, the serving was really chaotic and our experience was disturbed by rushed and unorganised watering. The dishes was served in a hurry and whilst half of the table still was eating the previous curse. The plates and drinks were handed out to be passed on by us, ourself. Overall, we had the feeling of having to finish quickly and it was not a sense of taking our time to taste the food and enjoying the moment. The atmosphere didn't do the food the right.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Japanese Kaseiki Style
It's probably the best meal I've had in Japan. Giro Giro (why they call it Guilo Guilo, I have no idea) Hitoshina is a wonderful modern kaseiki style Japanese restaurant. The food is sublime and delicious. So much so that we didn't care that we had no idea what we were eating: we had such trust in the chef. Book early, book the counter so you can watch the chefs
Be the first to ReplyAn unfortunate Kaiseki experience
We book ahead after following recommendations from a website I've forgotten the name of. We had high hopes for a modern Kaiseki meal after experiencing a traditional one at a Ryokan a few days prior. I want to try and explain why I've given it 2 stars. We arrived and were seated upstairs away from the downstairs counter which looked a bit more fun and interactive. That's my fault, I did request it. The waiting staff seemed stressed and it was reflected in the presentation and explanation of each dish. This was very important for us as my wife is pregnant so we expected there to be certain things she wouldn't be able to eat. The beef entre was lovely and the tuna sashimi was also fresh and high quality. The mackerel was also crispy skinned and tasty. Fried aubergine in a green soup (can't be more descriptive than that) was also refreshing. However, the fried lotus root was bland. The Kaiseki selection included scrambled egg with grape (odd) but a few other morsels I'd love to describe but were presented without a description. A chestnut fried rice surrounded with crispy fish skin was also very unusual, but not unpleasant. The ice cream trio finale had melted but consisted of apple (tasty but chunky), black tea (no business being an ice cream) and a final green flavour we guessed was matcha but honestly, no idea. Overall a poor meal and service, but with a few nice courses in between. And cold beer.
Be the first to ReplyA modern and delicious experience in Kyoto
Unfortunately, we couldn't make any more reservations online, as we were only in Kyoto for two days. But by chance, during our walk through the city, we passed the very eye-catching glass-front restaurant of Edakuni Eiich. Without further ado, we decided to try for a reservation. Mr. Edakuni Eiich said that he was booked out for the same evening but could offer us a table upstairs, on the first floor, for tomorrow evening. We were very much looking forward to this evening and were happy about this positive promise. Arriving shortly before 8 p.m., we were invited upstairs and began our culinary experience at Giro Giro Hitoshima. After the second course, we got seats offered on the ground floor bar and were overjoyed to watch the chefs and assistants at work. The relaxed style and appreciative interaction with the staff were pleasing and showed us that we were in the right place. After a total of eight courses, our dinner was over, which we enjoyed to the full. We had an incomparable experience and recommend it as a culinary highlight in Kyoto.
Be the first to ReplyFirst rude Japanese met in my life
I think I found here the first rude Japanese of my life. The bold chef was extremely rude. Moreover, on the 8 dishes, 3 were very good, 2 were not good, 3 were very very bad (especially the seaweed pudding). The only positive thing was the very gentle french speaking guy. Never again
Be the first to ReplyVery bad experience
Unfortunately weโve had a very bad experience. It took one hour for them to serve us. The food was awful and not well prepared. It was expensive also. The only thing was the goodwill of the servants from Nepal that, by the way did not speak a good English

Second and last visit. Felt as if we were in trouble for being late. No welcome or farewell. Food so disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best kaisaki deals in town
Possibly one of the best deals in town, Giro Giro Hitoshina will wow you with beautiful, full flavors for a very affordable price, at least by Kyoto standards. Try to request a table on the ground floor where you can watch the chef hard at work. There's also seating upstairs, but you won't be able to watch the kitchen. The chef is super friendly and always has a smile on his face. This adds tremendous warmth to this intimate eatery. Here is what my kaiseki menu included: 1) Sea cucumber soup with egg flower and fish cake. This was the perfect way to start the meal, after a snowy, freezing wintry day outside 2) Fish cake, fugu blowfish, spring roll, radish, yuba, and broccoli. This dish was beautifully presented, like a mini jewelry box filled with beautiful treasures 3) Japanese crab with miso and spring vegetable puree, topped with a red bean. Absolutely delicious. I wanted seconds and thirds 4) Yellowtail and yam soup. Savory and yummy, though the fish was just a tad overcooked and tough 5) Cuttlefish with red radish, shitake mushroom, and diakon dashi. I loved this dish. The cuttlefish was creamy and tender, and the little bits of pickles veggies in the daikon dashi gave each bite a crisp, fresh kick 6) Deep fried pork belly with leek and kumquat sauce. So savory, so yummy 7) Rice onigiri with ginko nuts, salted fish, dashi broth, and pickles vegetables. This dish was just ok 8) Kumquat ice cream, sweet potato cake, avocado cream, and strawberry. Beautiful presentation.
Be the first to ReplyStill thinking about this place 3 years later
My husband and I ate here 3 years ago in May of 2017. We were just reminiscing about how amazing it was, so I felt compelled to write a review. One of our favorite spots in the two weeks we spent in Japan, and we visited a good number of highly regarded restaurants. Intimate, delicious, authentic. I hope to visit again one day.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent!
This was a very fun experience. There is a set menu with a number of courses. So there is no selection involved. All of the food is delicious. Mostly vegetable and seafood. Very little meat. We've been to the sister restaurant in Honolulu many times and love that as well. Highly recommended. The restaurant is very small and I would strongly suggest reservations. Very reasonably priced!
Be the first to ReplyTotally totally amazing
I canโt imagine how this place does not get all 5 star reviews. First you have to know you are going to a kaiseki, you donโt choose you are given a series of small dishes that are prepared by the chef for that day. You have to pay cash (which is common in Japan). Now that you know that and still want to go be prepared for an amazing meal. Every course was fantastic, both delicious and the presentation was amazing. Chef explained every dish (in broken English but that is ok). Service was well timed. We were not rushed but we didnโt wait. Even though each course is small we were full when we left. If you like this kind of food and presentation I would definitely recommend going . It was all locals the night we went. Ask to sit at the counter on the first floor to get the total experience. Totally totally amazing.
Be the first to ReplyBlown away by this place!
Blown away by this amazing find! We were walking along one of the laneways of beautiful Kyoto and came across this hidden gem. Very reasonably priced at 4000 yen for 8 beautiful dishes that were not only delicious and full of flavour but also so beautifully presented. We were lucky enough to get a table as the restaurant was full. I would recommend to book and get a table at the bar so you can see the chefs in action. We were seated at a table upstairs which was still great!
Be the first to ReplyThoroughly enjoyable
we sat at the counter and I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, ambiance and watching the kitchen staff and fellow customers. The food was not always to be my taste but really interesting flavours and presentation and one not to be missed. Reasonably priced for where we were.
Be the first to ReplyBest value for money Kaiseki experience in Japan
Have been every time I go to Kyoto, and it's always different, but wonderful. Took my sons too, and it was a highlight of their trip to Japan.
