A hidden jewel
The best food I've had for some time. Tasty, exciting, different. Friendly staff. Starters were out of this world! The combination of meat, salad and pickles were sensational!

We've been here several times and each time we try something different. We are never disappointed. The servers let you cook a bit but they also help cook the food, which is a nice combo... You don't feel left out but you don't have to do all of it either. The booths work best for 4 people. On our last visit, we had 5 which left one of us reaching a bit. We order Korean beer with our meal. Better combo than wine. They are in a strip mall so there's parking, one big plus too! Give this place a try next time you are craving Korean BBQ.

Spectaculer experience. Best service that we ever had at an Asian restaurant. Very fine food as well.

I used to live next door to Cho Sun Ok. Sure, it's not rated the best in the city, but it was authentic and without pretense. The food was outstanding when I visited, but, a bonus (and hindrance) the decadent smells of garlic-laden, barbecued meats would often waft into our apartment. I liked that place.
I've been to a few other Korean BBQ spots in Chicago since my Berteau years. A mainstream joint downtown and now Gogi on the near Northwest. I can't say I liked my Gogi experience that much. Or, I can at least say I'd likely not visit again.
We arrived promptly when they opened at 4:30 p.m. (on a Saturday.) I had been wanting ramen, but pregnant wife wanted Korean BBQ. If you or your partner is pregnant, you just go with what the pregnant lady wants. So, BBQ it was. (And, I really wanted banchan so it worked out perfectly.)
But it didn't. Despite being one of three tables present, our waitress served like she had never served in her life - hurried, anxious, worried - but highly absent. I ordered the king prawns and my other-and-a-half ordered the bulgogi. We got banchan and rice. If you don't like spice, don't get the banchan. It was all laden with chili sauce (which, I loved, but my counterpart didn't.)
The prawns were gross. They were plain - no seasoning, no sauce, no flavor other than mud. I can handle some head-on shrimp, whatever, but these were vein-full and in need of a marinade or seven. Our waitress brought them out, didn't explain ANYTHING to us, put them on our little table-top grill and walked off. Uhm.... how long do I need to have these on before I flip? How long total do I cook? What's the protocol? She came back a few minutes later and flipped them for us - without a word.
They ended up so overcooked I could barely get the shells off. My hands were coated with charcoal, shrimp poop and crustacean legs. They were disgusting. And my only saving grace was the garlic butter that had been placed in a tiny pot next to the shrimp - was I to dip my shrimp in this? I did. But it didn't change anything.
Plain white rice. Chili-spiced banchan (there was no other flavor but chili.) I guess the bulgogi was good, my wife said, but it looked like a giant puddle of goo.
However. Is this authentic? Should I have been happy with this plain-jane showing of food that we didn't get the chance to cook ourselves? (But really, really should have.)
I'm disappointed with the lack of communication from our server. Lack of flavor for most of the meal. Extremely high prices (for what it was -- shrimp was $25 and bulgogi was $22. Menu said chardonnay was $9 a glass, and I had three, which came out to $33?????) And for smelling like I had put my own body on the grill. (Pro tip: Don't take your coat inside, leave it in your car. Super happy we did. But your hair, clothes and skin WILL smell like BBQ when you leave.)
Amazing Korean BBQ in Chicago
Tripsters-
Should you visit the Windy City then hop on the L, get on a bus or grab a Lyft/Uber to Northside for some delightful and delicious eats!!
Our friends learned about Gogi on PBS' "Check Please" and invited us to give it a try. I'm so glad we did.
Here's what we loved: Bibimbap (vegetables and seafood), King Shrimp, Bulgogi, Kimchi Fried Rice, the side dishes (save for one), Vegetable Pancake appetizer and the OB pilsner beer (the four of us killed two 60 oz bottles over dinner)
Here's what was okay: the Brisket (don't get me wrong it was decent and we killed it but next time I'll probably not order this)
Overall: Excellent Food, Excellent Service! We will definitely return!
Good Food, Poor Service
Took my fiancé here for a date night. The food was good, but the service was awful. We told the server that it was our first time having Korean BBQ and received no help in how to order. We ended up ordering too much food, and no guidance on what to do. To top it off we asked for more water and was brought warm tap water. Highly unlikely I would return, I felt unwanted the entire time we were there.

My family had mixed reviews, but I thought Gogi was very good. The food was flavorful and generously portioned.
The staff was nice, but service was a little slow considering it was as busy when we first arrived. We had to order hot tea 4 times. If you order any BBQ meats, the server cooks it for you instead of other restaurants that don't.
Other than that, I would recommend Gogi if you're looking for a solid Korean BBQ joint.
run don't walk....deserves 10 stars!
Run, don’t walk….
If you are looking for A M A Z I N G Korean food with A W E S O M E service and F A N T A S T I C atmosphere, head to GOGI. I am so glad that people take the time to post reviews because this is what brought me and my beautiful nieces and their adorable boyfriends to this wonderful establishment! How often do you finish eating at a restaurant and already have the next dinner planned at that same place?!!! For me, not that often! We ordered a ton of food and delicious drinks that made us certainly feel as if we had landed in Korea for an authentic meal. You will simply not believe the amount of side dishes and how tasty each one is. Typically, I have seen maybe 3 or 4 side dishes served at other Korean restaurants but here there were 13! They really know how to do it at GOGI and more than fulfill your craving for delicious Korean food. We had a couple of appetizers, the seafood pancake being a total must. We requested it extra crunchy and of course, it came out deliciously crunchy with fantastic dipping sauce. Then we ordered a couple of BBQ meat and vegetarian meals. Each one was better than the one before! Because I am not a vegetarian and got to try everything! They paid so much attention to us that we truly felt like family. There was nothing we ever needed that was not immediately brought to us and the SERVICE WAS SECOND TO NONE. They cooked for us on the little grill at the table and we had so much more fun being able to chat with our waiter. He TOTALLY MADE OUR EVENING! So, as a result of this U N R E AL experience, we will be coming back with a larger group hopefully in mid December! We absolutely cannot wait! We had so much fun!!!
THANKS Peter FOR RUNNING A WELL OILED MACHINE! WE LOVED MEETING YOU, YOUR MOM AND YOUR STAFF!!! We cannot wait to see you all again!
Best korean bbq tried in Chicago (so far)
The food was expensive, but the appetizer selection was more generous than in most Korean bbq places and the meat seemed of higher quality (i.e., less fatty). The waitress helped us with the grilling, which was appreciated. The interior design was quite nice. Would definitely return, next time hopefully with a larger group.

Let me tell you about Gogi. Walking in, you are hit by a smell so enticing it will cause you to lose all control of your saliva glands. In a good way. You probably won’t notice the pleasant decor or the friendly staff at this point because you only have one thing on your mind: getting some of whatever is making that smell in your mouth as soon as possible. I didn’t actually use the menu, instead asking to be served whatever was recommended by the staff, and, going by the fact that every single thing that arrived on my table was mind-blowingly delicious, I can’t fault this strategy at all. It does, however, mean that I can’t recommend many specific dishes because, although I was informed by the servers as to the names of the dishes I was about to consume, when the food started coming I was so enchanted by the display of cooking in front of me, and the fabulousness of what I was putting in my mouth, I immediately forgot what everything was called. No biggie.
The food came quickly, and there were side dishes aplenty, all presented wonderfully and equally as good-tasting. The seafood pancake was heaven-sent, and the soup was so good I stole my dining companion’s when he wasn’t looking. I think he has yet to forgive me. Then came the meat. Oh my god, the meat. Marinated to perfection and oozing with flavours that will make you question if your taste buds have even been working properly up until now, it is cooked right in front of you at the table by either yourself or an expert BBQist. You just take pieces right off the grill, pop them in your mouth, or with salad or whatever floats your boat and... ... holy s***. I have had a lot of meat in my mouth, believe me, but this, my friends, is the best damn stuff that ever crossed my lips. As if that wasn’t enough, after you have enjoyed this mouthgasm of meaty goodness, the lovely staff will take make you a bangin’ egg fried rice in all the meat juices from the grill, which is a perfect way to end a perfect dinner. They also have a fantastic selection of craft beers and some splendid soju that will get you as merry as merry can be.
TLDR: Gogi will please you in ways you didn’t think you could be pleasured, and you may have a hard time resisting the urge to go there twice a day. I know I do.
