The award for quirkiest dishes would have to go to St. John's food and wine (I ate a pigeon), but otherwise, Gunpowder wins all of the other superlatives. Its food was phenomenal, the preparation unique, the space trendy and intimate, and the service warm.I've read that the wait can be substantial. We arrived on a Saturday at 18:00, although seats were available at that time, we chose to put our names on a text waitlist for 19:00. We were seated immediately upon our return, and it looked like other arriving groups didn't face too much of a wait. Note that the space is small, so this is a better venue for a date or small groups. We tried the following:-Rasam ke bomb: a nice little Instagram-friendly appetizer and fully unique, and thus a bit difficult to describe. It's essentially a shot of tamarind-based soup, capped off by a crispy ball filled with potato. I've seen it described as dosa-like, but the batter is crispier than the dosas I've tried. In any case, eat/slurp these two elements together- a bite of the ball with a bit of the soup. Voila.-Spicy venison and vermicelli Doughnut: a fun presentation: looks like a furry doughnut that might be eaten on some distant planet or by spongebob squarepants. A thin layer of fried vermicelli envelopes tender venison, which we dunked into a spicy tamarind (I think?) sauce. This was definitely the spiciest dish of everything we tried. Also, I'm rather sure this marks my first time trying venison as part of Indian cuisine.-Maa's kishmiri lamb chops: more tender meat, delicately wrapped in a tandoori char, with a green mint chutney type of sauce. Very delicious. -Sea bass paturi maach: this was lightly flavored with mustard seed and a gentle mustard sauce, which was really a genius preparation, because it allows the beautiful flavor of the sea bass to shine. Served in a banana leaf. We also had a gorgeous glass of red wine from the Cotes-du-Rhône, which more than held its own against these bold flavors. One gripe: our water was served lukewarm. (I'm aware this may be a cultural difference, but I really find it unpleasant.)
