Preparation is key!
I have been to Hall’s several times and have always received great service but today was different. The service and food was below standard. It seems as if management and the staff were not prepared for the amount of people that would be customers due to a celebration parade happening in front of the restaurant. A large number of people who were not customers were crowding up the bar areas and restrooms. My party was a large group and arrived way before the individuals waiting for the parade came in and made the environment uncomfortable and caused the slow down in service. We received our food which was not prepared to standard, 30 minutes after we ordered. Our server was bringing our silverware out with his bare hands, spilling drinks and not offering refills. Needless to say it will be a while before I patron or recommend Hall’s.
Be the first to ReplyCaramel cake more like cornbread.
Ordered Caramel Cake which is now a layer cake again. It was very dry and had a coarse consistency resembling cornbread. I wish they could find a cake maker who could produce a cake like the one they served when they first came to Columbia. Tonight's version was extremely disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing birthday dinner
Halls is a place we come for birthdays, celebrations, baptisms etc. tonight we dined for my father and husband’s birthday. In the online reservation I placed it was their birthdays, reminded the hostess and waitress while at dinner, yet at the end of the meal the waitress (when asked) stated “ oh I forgot”. After we ate our dessert we order was finished she then brought a complementary desert with candles. When paying this amount for dinner you expect meat cooked correctly and hot meals. The sides were cold, and meat (prime rib and lamb) were all cooked medium/medium well when ordered medium rare. Our waitress actually noticed after we were served, a male manager came tot ale pictures: It took over 10 minutes to receive new meals, no apology, cold sides already severed. The only good things about our meals were the bread pudding and cocktails. At the end I did bring up my complaints to another manager where they comped our side dishes (?). Cold sides and meat prepared incorrectly along with not making celebrations acknowledged is a far step down from the halls we have experienced in the past. Columbia has some incredible dining establishments I would encourage anyone to try for a celebration dinner over halls now. Not worth $300+ by any means.
Be the first to ReplyMade to feel special but food was only ok.
Restaurant was perfect for ambiance, accoustics, and wait staff, particularly Wayne. First couple of courses were promising but the tomahawk steak was definitely not worth the money. Looked perfectly cooked but couldn't have been any tougher. Disappointed. For the amount of money spent, this should have been a meal we'd rave about, and we can't.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful restaurant with good ambiance!!
Beautiful restaurant with good ambiance. The prices were reasonable and the service was top notch!!! The dishes were served on time! Well, it was a great steak! Not too buttery at all and if you like steak, you will love this one. Overall the restaurant stands out for its area.
Be the first to ReplyTasty steak and cocktails, but poor environment and service
My husband and I went during restaurant week and were a bit disappointed. We’re native South Carolinians, and we had a wonderful experience at the Greenville location and had heard only great things about the Charleston location. We were seated in the outdoor patio, but they had our table right next to the open air on a 30-degree night. The heaters weren’t adequate enough to keep either of us warm. Our server made an implication about a side of truffle butter as if it came with an order of our steak, which it didn’t. She did this for both of our steaks, seemingly trying to up-charge us, as she had to know that 1. the truffle butter was a pricey addition and 2. that one side order would’ve been plenty big enough for my wife and I to share. The service was also incredibly slow and we didn’t see our server much throughout the entire night. We’re aware that Hall’s isn’t a bargain-hunter’s location, but we were intentional about going during restaurant week. We’re a young couple who can’t afford to go often, but when we do, we expect the best of the best from a place like Hall’s. Unfortunately, our experience that night will keep us from returning or from recommending others to go. The food scene in Columbia is improving steadily, and it looks like Hall’s might not be able to keep up in terms of performance. The prestigious name and history can only last so long with a subpar environment and manipulative service.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the Best!!!
Wow oh wow! We have heard about Hall's since moving to the area. We finally made it for a late birthday celebration and Hall's did not disappoint. It is in a prime location off the main street with bar, patio and private seating. I suggest you make a reservation to get a table as it fills up quick. If the weather was warmer we would have sat in the patio but it's October and getting chillier. Once seated, our waiter and service was second to none! He was personable , friendly and knowledgeable and his sense of humor matched up well with ours. For drinks, we ordered the Old Fashion which turned out ok. I have had better but this one wa just ok. For our entree, we ordered the quail, Prime rib and rib eye with bacon mac and cheese, brussel sprouts, and mushroom risotto for sides. By the way, everything is a la carte with few exceptions. The quail came with a couple side but every other plate sides are ordered separately. One side dish can be split amongst 4 people. They are good sized portions. My dry aged rib eye was prepped and cooked to perfection. I highly recommend getting the truffle butter with the steak as it adds another layer of delicious flavor. The prime rib was also cooked to perfection. The quail was very good too. The dessert was the cherry on top. They serve this cinnamon roll chessecake that even someone who does not like sweets (me) could not resist. If you are in the area, I highly recommend visiting Hall's for a truly succulent eating experience!
Be the first to ReplyThe best steakhouse we have EVER dined at, by FAR!
As Gamecock fans heading to Columbia for a yearly football game has been a tradition. It has been a struggle to find fine dining, so it's nice to have a "go-to"--- this is a steak house that delivers. Hopping scene but service is still top notch. Our dinner was flawless, from apps, to superb sides, to of course, the steaks-- all fabulous, extensive wine list and cocktail choices abound-- not cheap, but a place that's worth the money! Even though the place was packed, servers didn't miss a beat and timing of meal delivery was spot on. It's the vibe you would expect, very lively. I'd only do date night outside of football season. We shall return.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food and Great ambience in Columbia
We were in Columbia for Family weekend at the University of South Carolina. My son's one request was a reservation for dinner at Hall's. I ca truly say that Hall's did not disappoint. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable. We sat outside on a beautiful terrace with some live music playing. The appetizers were outstanding. We enjoyed the fried green tomatoes with crab and bacon succotash. Every bite was delicious. We also really enjoyed the Calamari which was crispy, seasoned ewell and had two nice accompanying sauces. The steaks really were the stars of the show. My Ribeye was seared just right, juicy and tender in the middle and seasoned perfectly. The mashed potatoes and garlic green beans were great sides to enjoy as well. Everyone in my family had a terrific meal. I highly recommend Hall's when visiting Columbia and we look forward to coming back soon.

Great restaurant for our Anniversary! Music, lighting, and the location created the perfect ambience. Mark our server was knowledgeable about the menu, from the appetizers to the desserts. He was friendly and funny! He always made sure our wedding anniversary night was a special one. The salmon was delicious, flavorful and had just the right amount of herbs that completed the potatoes. The cinnamon roll cheesecake dessert was a win for me. Will definitely be back!

Great , But Parking is a problem, unless there is something that we don’t know! We had lunch on Sunday. Parking on the street was impossible
Be the first to ReplyUnfortunately, did not meet expectations
The wine the sommelier helped choose was delicious, and the service and friendliness of everyone we encountered was exceptional. The food was only so-so. I had trouble finding the tomatoes in my fried green tomatoes appetizer because of the huge amount of succotash, and the tuna tartare, although good, was not great. My friend commented that her filet was not nearly as tender as she expected. The tiramisu was very good;chocolate chip cookie skillet was very overdone. Only the very middle was even soft enough for a spoon to chop through and it was at most, room temperature. Not soft and warm as represented. We had a wonderful evening but wouldn't return the next time we visit Columbia.

Recently my daughter and i made the trip from baltimore to columbia in order to visit usc. While there we had the pleasure of trying halls. The place was absolutely top notch, i am so sad we only got to have lunch there. Excellent food and the service was second to none. Matt kept us laughing almost the entire meal. Still didn't miss a beat while serving us and other tables. And took time out of his day to talk to us about his experiences as a student at USC as well as his friend's. My daughter wants to major in sports management. His close friend graduated a few years ago from usc with a sports man. degree + now works for the predators.I really appreciated that insight. It felt like a more realistic view of usc than what we got on our tour. Best server ever. Matt's teammates were also solid. Perfectly cooked food, on time, they kept our table tidy, waters never touched the halfway mark. I created this account solely because i felt Hall's deserved praise for one of the best meals i've had. I really cant say enough about this place. If my daughter choses USC i can promise you we will be back. This time for dinner.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Steak House!!!
We had so much fun at this restaurant. From walking in the door to leaving, the staff could not have been kinder. We had a mishap with our steaks. They went up and beyond to make our evening wonderful. Each and every person from the manager’s to the waitstaff apologized to us. I cannot remember everyone’s names, but our servers Stevie and Kelsey were very attentive and enjoyable. Thanks again. We will definitely stop in again when passing through Columbia.

FANTASTIC!!! Highly recommend asking for Jack, best waiter we've ever had, hands down. You won't need a menu, just get what Jack recommends, you won't be disappointed!

High prices but we had a fabulous birthday celebration. The server went out of her way to see we enjoyed ourselves. We recommend the seafood tower as an appetizer.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service. Friendly and professional.
Service was excellent. Staff Friendly and professional. Clean. Food is good but lacks spice and recipes are safe with few vegetables.
Be the first to ReplyConsistently wonderful food, consistently terrible service
We've been to Hall's in Columbia four times and we've been to Hall's in Charleston three times. Our experiences in Charleston have all been wonderful! Great food, attentive, thoughtful and importantly, professional service every time. Unfortunately, this has not been the case in Columbia. While the food has always been good, I don't know how much worse the service could be. Every time we've gone to Hall's in Columbia, we have been served by inattentive, incompetent and unprofessional servers. On one occasion, the waiter repeatedly addressed me as "dude". Can you imagine that? This is supposedly a high-end restaurant. It is certainly an expensive restaurant. How could it employ waiters who would imagine it acceptable to address an elderly patron as "dude"? The last time we went for brunch, our group had to wait two hours for our food. Miraculously, it came out warm and delicious, but the wait was intolerable. During the last ordeal, members of our party attempted to order drinks from the bar. On average, the drinks made it from the bar to the table, a matter of approximately thirty feet, in just over 30 minutes. The waitress was remarkably unconcerned about all this. In fact, she seemed annoyed at those among us who asked for an explanation. In fairness to Hall's, some of the unprofessionalism seen in their waitstaff is endemic to our times. Many Americans under 30 years of age have never known a formal, full-service dining experience. Most of these young people seem exceptionally self-absorbed and genuinely uninterested in the concerns of their customers. While the customer waits for their cocktail, the server is in back, texting or checking their social media. It is truly remarkable how difficult it can be to get the attention of waitstaff like this. They walk through their serving area, carefully avoiding eye contact with everyone in their care. Ultimately, Hall's is responsible for the poor quality of their waitstaff. This is a management problem which can be solved by more selective hiring and more focused, professional training. However, since organizations frequently reflect the quality of their leadership, improving service at Hall’s Columbia might need to start at the top.

Halls just cannot be beat. Best service and food in Columbia. Lunch service is not as good but dinner service is always just perfect.
Be the first to ReplyNot up to Hall's standards
We have been fans of Hall's for years. Our son went to C of C and we visited quite often when in Charleston. Hall's is known for it's impeccable service and attention to detail. Last night was such a let down. Our server, who was very courteous, tried his best. It took well over 20 minutes to get our drinks. I seemed there was one bartender. The drinks were also no up to Hall's standards. We had one with the house wine that had a huge clump of sediment. Almost looked like a blackberry. The food was all delicious. When the bills came, it was a mess. Completely wrong on each ticket. There were 3 couples. I know everyone is struggling right now, but there seemed to be a lot of people working.
Be the first to ReplyDid Not Live Up to the Hype
Hall's Chop House is touted as one of the top shelf restaurants in Columbia. Knowing this, I had high expectations for an exceptional dining experience. I was disappointed in that the fish that I was served was close to spoiled and should not have been served. Its taste and odor were off-putting. The chef who prepared it should have been aware that it was not fit to be given to a customer. The serving staff was not friendly or welcoming. I doubt that I will visit this restaurant again nor will I recommend it to others.
