Great food, I had the rare seared tuna which was a good portion and quite enjoyable. Although the restaurant was crowded during the dinner hours, there was good service. The vibe was very sea like and southern . My stomach was a little queasy after but overall pretty good
Be the first to ReplyWe love Hanks.
As locals, it's fun to go to something touristy that's actually excellent. This visit we got the she crab soup, it was delicious. We got the seafood platter and the fried chicken and it was amazing. Service was amazing also! 10/10.
Be the first to ReplyHaving had more than our fair share of underwhelming
Having had more than our fair share of underwhelming Post-Covid dining experiences at C-Town's ubiquitous "locally sourced" (code for US FOOD) eateries, staffed by college kids and chefs whose only experience was on the Low Country circuit, we reluctantly agreed to meet some old neighbors when asked to join them at Hank's. FYI, Hank's is one of the Holy City's Top 25 Restaurants according to Conde' Nast, despite the fact that they (and 23 other competitors) don't bother to participate in Charleston's Annual Restaurant Week - a real slap in the face to locals in our opinion. Arriving shortly after our friends, we were shown to a tight fitting booth, with no tablecloth, located near the restrooms. To add to our already disappointing first impression, we faced the raw bar station, where one of Hank's employees would repeatedly remove his baseball cap to arrange his hairstyle while staring at the mirrored wall. Ambience was classic downtown vibe - lots of inappropriately dressed out-of-towners (baseball caps, jeans, and "Welcome to Charleston" t-shirts, with one woman implausibly wearing Daisy Duke cutoffs and a faux fur Ushanka hat (at least the earmuffs were pulled up) - in other words, All-You-Can-Eat-Shrimp week at Red Lobster or Bubba Gump Shrimp Company customers. Our server, much to his credit, sensed our unease, and did his best to make us feel welcome by cracking a few jokes, thoroughly reviewing the menu and taking our drink order. An all-around nice guy. Soon after, a group of young women arrived with roller bags (confirming my tourist bias). Drinks arrived, but without benefit of cocktail napkins or coasters - typical Charleston amateur hour. Despite the menu proclaiming Hanks as being "voted Charleston's Top Seafood Restaurant" (by whom, it didn't say), I assumed that the actual selection of fish would be similar to most seafood restaurants around these parts (Swordfish/Tuna/Grouper/Mahi), and I was right. Since moving here, we've given up on finding Snapper, Monkfish, Arctic Char, Striped Bass, Dover Sole, Branzino, Turbot, Rainbow Trout, Tilapia Rockfish, Halibut, Sea Bass or Mackeral, just to name a few. The Broiled Seafood Sampler caught my eye, but then I noticed that the dish came with French Fries. Are you kidding me? Not even some rice or broccoli or even asparagus? Oh, wait a minute, I'd have to shell out $14 more for a side dish of three skinny stalks of asparagus. French Fries is a culinary cop-out folks, like serving bagged potato chips with the Yellowfin Tuna appetizer at Quinte Oyster Bar. So, I decided to start with some She-Crab soup (almost entirely devoid of any crab) backed up by a $16 Wedge Salad, lacking any of the traditional croutons, blue cheese crumbles or egg, but instead, came garnished with a pitiful amount of onions, rock hard bacon bits and a couple of cherry tomato halves. Ugh! At that point, I decided to pass on the main course. It was now clear, that Hank's bore no resemblance to my "best in class" SHAW'S SEAFOOD in Chicago (take a look at their website, if you want to know what a superior seafood restaurant is all about). In closing, Hank's may be C-Town's top seafood joint, but in my book, it's just another by-the-numbers, tourist dining destination, recommended to Holy City visitors by the gal running their horse-drawn carriage tour that afternoon or local "Hotel Partners". The type of customers who equate "expensive" with "good" and are willing to overlook the restaurant's egregious 2.5% "Culinary Service Charge" or their 1% credit card charge, because they're on vacation. But, who really cares what I have to say? Hank's will always be as popular as a Titanic lifeboat, and besides, there's going to be a second location soon, in that other notable Foodie enclave...Columbus, Ohio.

Born and raised in Charleston and finally had the opportunity to experience the famous Hanks Seafood. The atmosphere is friendly and upper class. The staff are approachable and helpful. Our waitor was phenomenal. It was mentioned he looked like KFC colonal Sanders and he thought it was great. He was super personable and knowledgeable. The food was exceptional of course! I had the new England clam chowder, ceviche, and we shared a seafood tower. Everything was so flavorful but I have to highly recommend the clam chowder. The base was so light and packed with flavor. Normally I would have taken pictures but I was so absorbed by the experience. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Hanks may be the very best in Charleston. It is however expensive
Be the first to ReplyOnly available seating was at the bar.
Rich wood panelling resounds with a long history. Bouillabaisse was divine. Seafood casserole in cream sauce was amazing. Definitely be back

They gave away my table when we were exactly 15 min late, with no courtesy call or text. We made this resy weeks in advance. Won't be back. These restaurants who screw locals and regulars are asking for these reviews.
Be the first to ReplyHosted a dinner for 11.
Service, meals, and ambience were exceptional! Will return for sure.

Great food!!!! Sat at the bar and had some wonderful bread while waiting to get food. Shared steamed clams and fried chicken. So so good!!! I recommend
Be the first to ReplyExcellent place for fish in historic Charleston.
The dining room is historically elegant. Our only complaint was only loudness from large party, sitting near our table. The menu is varied, and the food is excellent. We done mostly on vegetarian and pescatarian items.

I'm a seafood fanatic who can't get enough of the fresh stuff back home in the midwest so I am always seeking it out anytime we're anywhere near the ocean. That's what led me here and this restaurant did not disappoint. As matter of fact, it exceeded my expectations. It's somewhat upscale and you would not feel out of place dressed business casual but you might feel a little odd wearing shorts, sandals, a tee-shirt and ball cap, but it isn't stuffy at all. The decor is well executed and the restaurant itself feels very welcoming. Our server was absolutely fantastic, the cocktails were very good and the food was excellent. My wife is not nearly as big a fan of seafood as I am. She actually doesn't care for most of it. She likes crab cakes but is extremely picky about them. She typically either loves the crab cakes somewhere or she absolutely hates them, not mach of a gray area here, but I have never disagreed with her assessment. She said that these crab cakes were probably the best she's ever had. She also had the seared tuna which she really liked. I started with oysters (which were very fresh and very flavorful, I had the east coast sampler), steamed shrimp which were excellently prepared and a breeze to peel, and the bouillabaisse which was also excellent. Overall our dining experience was fantastic start to finish. The bottom line: If you find yourself in Charleston and you like seafood, this place is wonderful.

love hanks so much i do 2-3 times a month and either do sit down or to go. love the bartender ryan! i always order the sautéed lump crab cakes and occasionally the shrimp cocktail, i highly recommend both they're definitely the freshest seafood in town. crab cakes will change your life with the lemon beurre blanc. if you're sitting down i'd recommend dressing up. I always tell people hanks is the seafood version of Halls, white coat service and beautifully decorated setting.

yummy! at 21, we were definitely the youngest in the restaurant by about 40 years. service was great, don't remember our server's name but he was super friendly and didn't treat us any different than his much older customers. he was also very knowledgeable and helpful when it came to what to order and what was yummy. my friend got the seafood a la wando and said it was very tasty and fresh! the shrimp and grits were delicious! not the best i've ever had ever but definitely a suuuper close second! she crab soup was on the salty side but great, also not the best in the area but delicious nonetheless! we finished off with a crème brûlée and it was great! ambiance was fancy and seemed like a great place for a business vibe dinner. great spot to try!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food and service.
Highly recommend if you are in Charleston. Sitting at the community table gave us a chance to share good food with interesting people.
Be the first to ReplyHanks is outstanding.
Sat at the bar. Service was excellent and the food was phenomenal. Had the tuna tartare and oysters casino for appetizers. Had the the Seafood Wando and Bouilbassi for dinner and they were excellent.
Be the first to ReplyLove Hanks.
Are at the bar and the bar tender was super nice and attentive. Remade my drink that was made wrong and he noticed it. Great food.

This place was highly recommended by so many people! And it did not disappoint! This was our first time to Charleston SC, and it was my birthday. We wanted a nice place to have dinner and drinks! We didn't have a reservation and it was busy. The hostess said we could wait an hour or set at the community table and they could seat us now. We took it what a fun time met people from all over the US. So that was fun and then came the food! I ordered the Seafood A La Wando! It was amazing every piece of seafood was perfect! My wife ordered the salmon, it melted in your mouth like butter and so flavorful. I wanted to go back the the next night and I should of!!
Be the first to ReplyA truly lovely seafood experience.
The She Crab soup is some of the best I've ever had, my flounder was good with a grit cake and asparagus salad.Unfortunately, we ordered oysters and they never came, but were on the bill and when we asked about wine, the waiter said he'd send the sommelier and she showed up with a wine, not just a recommendation, which I have never seen. It was a good wine, but I've never seen it done that way.

Classy environment but still warm and welcoming to us, less fancy guests. Amazing crab cakes with high meat ratio. Worth the cost!

My best friend and I were in the area and we wanted someone who could sit us without incident. Hank's definitely came through. We sat at the community table, which included other guests who didn't have a reservation. I think that idea is very smart and helps with networking. My meal was spectacular. I got the #5 broiled seafood with scallops, fish, shrimp, and a side. I'm so happy we went, it was so good! A nice place for date night or a special occasion dinner
Be the first to ReplyHank's is our favorite for a nice atmosphere and quality
Hank's is our favorite for a nice atmosphere and quality seafood. Love the shrimp and grits and also the fried platters are consistently wonderful.
Be the first to ReplyGreat atmosphere, great location in Charleston, great
Great atmosphere, great location in Charleston, great seafood! Fantastic service and amazing pecan pie and key lime pie! Bright and open, this is a wonderful place to take out of town guests. If you arrive early, they'll seat you if there's space! The salad special with peaches and shrimp was unusual and delicious. Wines and beers were great; Fleur de lis was my favorite cocktail, but I prefer them sweet where you can't really taste the alcohol. If you want to taste a bit more alcohol, go for the Amore Viola ($1 from each of those goes to Cancer research, too!) The scallops with the grapefruit and ginger vinaigrette were my favorite, and the ahi tuna was also fantastic. Our friends got a steak and the mussels and we heard rave reviews about those dishes, as well.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was nice but the server wasn't.
We came here for my recent birthday. First they seemed very irritated that I came with my kids (1 and 3 yrs old) and they were very well behaved. They even have a kids menu, so I didn't understand this. The server seemed like we just irritated him. Maybe another visit would be better.
Be the first to ReplyIt's overpriced for the quality of food.
We were really excited to eat there after we were told you have to try it..,...,scallops were tough and the crab cakes were full of filler. Not what we expected
