They are always so nice to me.
The old lady gives me fruit. Very inexpensive (free basically). they also have a very nice fire hydrant out front to sit while you wait.

The staff was fine, the environment is great and the food was tasty. Unfortunately they are understaffed, insanely slow, and strangely overpriced. I am soooo sick of dropping huge amounts of cash and walking out of a restaurant hungry. I just cannot stand it anymore. I have seen this popular business model a lot lately. Super small and very expensive dishes. This is not in the best interest of the consumer. It forces you to drop some serious bank and order a ton of dishes, in the name of it being cool, tapas style. I don't know, it just leaves me feeling hungry, poor, and ripped off. I don't mind spending money and I am sure this approach makes the restaurant a lot of it, but it is undoubtedly a huge deterrent, and when I find restaurants like this, I am in no rush to return.

I have been coming here regularly since it first opened seven years ago. Every year it gets better and better. So happy that they are open again. Don't miss the drink menu.

Delicious food! We ate dinner here the Friday after Thanksgiving and were wowed by the care taken and multiple flavors. We enjoyed squash blossom fritters, umeboshi plums, ebi and crab pancake and the fried chicken. There was no room left to try one of the ramens, but a fellow diner was enjoying a big, beautiful bowl, so next time! Great sake and attentive service.

A spot that didn't look like much from the outside, but reveals an excellently fused traditional and modern aesthetic. The food, drinks and staff, all superb! The seating and space were comfortable and pleasing for the izakaya-style atmosphere.Regarding the menu, I was pleasantly surprised that they offered many traditional Japanese dishes, like ika shiokara, that I'm guessing wouldn't be as popular here in the States. I ordered the "sake no tsumami" sampler and enjoyed all of them! As a bit of caution, if you are not accustomed to this type of food, it will likely be a challenge/adventure for your taste buds. Having grown up with food like that, I loved that this Izakaya was offering this selection and prepared them perfectly.Regarding their drink menu, they have a great "safe" selection of sake and beer that pairs well with the food. In addition, they have adventurous, upscale cocktails to try. I tried a couple of drinks from the cocktail list and, although not all of them matched my taste, they were impeccably prepared. Finally the staff, they are a shining example of customer service. They were attentive, personable and eager to make my experience here as positive as can be. They were also informed on all menu items we asked about and were helpful in guiding our food and drink choices.

Pros:- They shine at octopus dishes, but not the horumonyaki (which they are known for). The octopus are fresh (but overpriced)- My favorite takoyaki! It's creamy inside, cooked on the outside, with big chunks of octopus. Not too much brown sauce (some places put too much on). Very light and balancedCons:- Very pricey, compared to similar restaurants- Service is very slow, even though the restaurant is not usually packed. Staff seems overwhelmed without much reason. They pay attention more to the bar, than they do the tables- The horumonyaki is VERY bland and not super fresh. For this type of food, the organs have to be fresh. The skewered meats were also bland. I actually prefer the grilled organs/meats from Umai (interestingly, Umai is known to be a ramen shop. Their ramen is mediocre, but their horumonyaki shines)Conclusion:- As other reviews have mentioned, this restaurant has issues with slow service and being overpriced. Because of this, I recommend takeout (to avoid the slow service)- I do highly recommend trying the takoyaki and other octopus dishes here. If they brought down their prices a little and worked on better service, I would give them 4*- But if you're coming for horumonyaki (organ meats or thinly sliced meats cooked over coals), head over to Umai instead
Be the first to ReplyLiterally just walked out of this restaurant.
There was hardly anyone in here, we sat at a high top, hostess said waiter would be with us shortly. We spent about 15 minutes just waiting for someone to come up, put our hand up to have someone come over to take our order, closed our menu to see if that would signal someone to come over. The staff was just sitting at the bar talking and drinking sake so after a few more minutes we got up and left. This was the most bizarre experience I've ever had at a restaurant.

My BF took me here and I loved it! I am from Japan and this place taste like authentic Japanese food. The menu is interesting, and I'd def come back to try out other stuff.
Be the first to ReplyIt was my first time there and not a great dinner.
The order in which dishes came out was confusing. Got main dishes before appetizers and the pancake was burnt, surprised they would serve something so charred, pretty much inedible. To be fair, they said they were understaffed that night.

I wish I could give two reviews because this was like a combo 5 star for service and food and 2 star for... structure? I dunno.First and foremost we had an absolute blast with our server and the bartender who took the time to come by. The restaurant was pretty packed and they were running around but still took the time to chat with us. Lindsay was hilarious!! and Ada the bartender talked to us for a while about the single cup sake (so cute and we got to keep the cups!) The food is mostly pretty small portions (especially the yakitori) but we were told it was small plates from the start. Most of the food was amazing but our pancake (okinotaki?) took over an hour. We had sake drinks to keep us happy but when the owner came out from the kitchen to explain the situation he REEKED of cigarettes and wouldn't stop talking long enough for us to actually eat the thing that took so damn long. By the time he was done talking our food was lukewarm. Still pretty delicious but I wish it had come out on time and without the talking ashtray.

Lindsay here is the best server I've had in Chicago, and the food is the most delicious and authentic I've had since being in Japan. This business deserves every bit of the business thats coming its way now! Sometimes the food takes a moment to come out, but it's absolutely worth the wait.
