Jay Fai runs one of the most celebrated Bangkok food places (News articles and celebrity pics on their walls would attest to it) so we had to try it on our last trip to Bangkok. The bottomline is I have done it for the experience but I would definitely NOT go back again, all things considered. I am writing a long review because in my opinion, this place is venerated beyond what it deserves so I want to talk about both sides of eating here. Thailand in general and Bangkok in particular has phenomenal food and you're spoilt for choice, hence I wouldn't waste my time doing this whole experience again. Most people waiting seemed to be tourists and first-timers, very few "regulars". Other people have mentioned the sometimes confusing booking system and long waiting times (3 hours+ on average, we saw many people miss their slots and having to reenter at the back of the queue because they stepped out for a drink in the middle, so be careful while waiting). Waiting so long on a sweltering afternoon does take away from the experience. Before proceeding further, let me mention the prices are not exactly hawker-stall level (A meal for 2 can easily cost 100-120 USD here, which is at least 3-4x of what typical meals at such places cost in Thailand/Asia). Hence I'm a little critical of the inattentive service and other aspects such as charging for ice separately when all their water, coke, etc. was served almost at room temperature. The food itself was hit and miss. The seafood Tom Yum had amazing flavour and I kept going in for more. I'm afraid I can't say the same for another supposedly must-try dish, Drunken Noodles. This dish was usual hawker fare I thought, nothing spectacular. One huge positive is the generous portions of seafood - The drunken noodles and tom yum both came with massive sized prawns which were lovely. However, both these dishes also had some of the toughest and most chewy squid I have ever eaten. We had to spit out most of the squid, it was rubbery and inedible. I'm not sure if it was just a bad piece of squid or the cooking but again, one would expect this to be taken care of. I want to call out the crab omelette: It's a unique dish, unlike any other and the large quantity of crab is just unbelievable. For a crab lover like me, I was over the moon just because of the amount of fresh crab meat on offer. However, I wouldn't call it the most flavourful of dishes, it was bland, and aside from the greed for fresh crab, I would have struggled to finish the dish. Like I said at the start, Bangkok has so many good options, even if Michelin-starred food is what you are after. Unless you want a selfie for instagram, I would spend my afternoon at one of the other places, eating similar if not better food with much lesser hassle and without having it to literally sweat it out for food. For these reasons, I'm going with a 3/5 and an average rating for Jay Fai, a place I would happily skip.
