Jua New York Reviews from The Last Year
My wife and I went there on a Friday evening.
It opened at 6pm and was quickly filled up. The restaurant seats about 40 people. All guests are served with the same 7 course meal with two optional pieces for extra. The first course is a single piece of maki with caviars. It is ok, nothing fancy. 2nd course is a bowl of Ceviche (Sea bream). Again, it is ok, but not impressive. 3rd course is porridge with some foie gras. This is when I start to get disappointed. I would expect something special for a Michelin star restaurant. 4th course is a thin piece of sole grilled with skin. The skin is chewy with a strong fish smell. The fish is simply grilled. Even I can do better than that. 5th course is a slice of roasted duck with some kimchi sides. Realizing this is the last course before dessert, I am very disappointed. 6th course is sorbet, 7th course is sweat potato donut with a scoop of ice-cream. This tasting menu cost $140 per person. All courses are mass produced from the kitchen and synchronously served to all customers. It gives you a sense of fast food service. The dishes are not impressive at all, and more like home cooking. Two out of seven courses are just commoditized desserts. I would not complain if the owner charges $50 per person. But pricing it at $140 per person, mass produce it in the kitchen, synchronously serve them by 6-7 waiter waitress earning minimal wage and living mostly on tip. This is just pure GREED. As a comparison, I went to an Omakase earlier this week at UES. Two chef make sushi in front of 8 customers. Personally prepared in front of you, explaining each course and ingredients. More than 10 courses and cost $135 per person. That was a much better experience. I would recommend against JUA because it is a glorified fast-food restaurant.
Was super excited to finally try JUA and it truly did not
Was super excited to finally try JUA and it truly did not disappoint! The ambiance is pretty casual for a Michelin restaurant and you can dress up or dress down without feeling out of place. I actually appreciated this since I'm not a fan of the super stuffy formal dining experiences that a lot of Michelin restaurants offer. Service was friendly, quick and efficient. The pacing of each dish was almost perfect and it truly didn't feel like a 2-hour meal because we were eating and catching up the whole time! We tried some of their mocktails and wines and everything was so tasty! I don't quite remember which one I ordered but it was a nice grapefruit drink that was super refreshing in the NY summer heat. Now onto the food - 5 savory and 2 sweet dishes. Caviar Kim - an amazing first bite with elements of crunch from the seaweed, saltiness from the caviar and fattiness from the tuna. 5/5 Mulhoe - this was a cold dish similar to a soupey ceviche. It took a couple bites to get used to it but I ended up loving the acidity and cooling effects of the dish. It really got our appetite rolling! 4/5 Jook - this was our least favorite dish and the reason why I didn't give 5 stars. I was really looking forward to the jook because of all the other reviews but on our day, the porridge came with eel and foie gras which was a little bit strange and didn't go well together imo. The abalone jook sounds much better. 3/5 Sole - amazing and perfectly cooked with great flavours. 5/5 Duck - highlight and standout dish of the night. So fun and delicious. 5/5 Strawberry - great palate cleanser. 5/5 Juak- Korean donut. Was a bit heavy and chewy but the ice cream was delightful. 4/5 Overall an amazing experience and would definitely be a great treat when catching up with friends or date night. The vibe and food are both awesome here!
When you think about a religious experience, traveling
When you think about a religious experience, traveling somewhere far away and feeling completely out of your element or simply existing with your familiar, ordinary surroundings while on some sort of substance come to your mind. Jua in NYC was a religious experience for me. As a "picky eater" growing up (especially regarding seafood), fine dining broke me out of those fallacies and exposed me to a the divinity that the seas have to offer. Jua took it to another level for me and left me flabbergasted. As a seafood forward tasting concept, I can say that what they're doing here genuinely blew my mind and brought me closer to a higher power The abalone Jook left me speachless. The diver sole had me CRAVING more. The desserts may be the best I've had - and I've been to 3 star places. On top of this, it's one of the best deals in NYC for a fine dining tasting menu
We were somewhat disappointed by our experience at Jua.
Uni and Caviar had too much going on (too many overpowering flavors) that negated the deliciousness of the main ingredients. The abalone stew (jook) was tasty but too heavy and everyone at the table was too full after. The donut dessert was delicious. One of the parties at our table was late so they rushed everything, like a few seconds between every course. Overall at 200++ pp it was not the michelin experience I was expecting.
10/10 experience.
Each dish was flavorful and just kept getting better even when I thought it wouldn't be possible. The service was impeccable! The staff were attentive and smooth.
Well I shouldn't be writing this, because it will hurt me
Well I shouldn't be writing this, because it will hurt me at the end, as I won't be able to get a table/reservation here anymore!!!! But wow this team deserves standing applause! Hands down WOW one of the best experiences from the arrival to departure, there is nothing they could have done better. Service 10+ Space 10+ Ambience 10+ But the food !!! Thank you chef my biggest compliment to you, your team and the kitchen you run! I couldn't pick 1 dish, all 8 of them were evenly out of this world. Not sure why I'm still writing I should justd start booking my next resy as I'm afraid it will be impossible to get a table here in amonths or two. Hands down one of the best experiences in the city and I have been in the city long enough to make this statement Don't believe me? Keep scrolling and I will keep eating!!! You're welcome!!!
This review is long overdue.
First of all, I want to say this place is absolutely amazing. The food is incredibly flavorful, and most importantly, it's affordable for a Michelin-star restaurant. The staff at Jua are superb--attentive, professional, and thorough in explaining the menu. My favorite dish is the jook with added abalone. It's so creamy and delicious! I would definitely revisit again and hope they surprise us with a new prix fixe menu.
Enjoyed my michelin star experience at Jua! Loved many of
Enjoyed my michelin star experience at Jua! Loved many of the courses, from the caviar to the sweet potato donut dessert. The drinks were also exceptional - loved the old fashioned and my lychee drink. Enjoyed the wine pairing as well! Overall a very nice affordable korean michelin experience in NYC!
Really enjoyed this meal but was not dreaming about it for
Really enjoyed this meal but was not dreaming about it for days after. Every dish was very good but none were out of this world so at $140pp +tax+tip, I probably would not return. Ambiance was casual for a Michelin but service was perfect. Very friendly and made our party feel at home! Had a great time (:
Amazing place and great value! Lots of food, you will
Amazing place and great value! Lots of food, you will definitely feel full afterwards. The service was attentive and we did not feel rushed between each dish.
Top notch restaurant
Amazing! One of my top meals I’ve had in my life. The prixfixe is a good price and actually very filling. Every dish is very thoughtfully crafted
Dining at this establishment was a disheartening
Dining at this establishment was a disheartening experience, underscored by a pervasive sense that the dishes were churned out with an almost mechanical indifference. The portions served were startlingly minuscule, leaving one questioning the value proposition of the meal. Compounding the disappointment was the menu's lack of transparency regarding ingredients, which is not only frustrating for those trying to make informed culinary choices but poses a significant risk for individuals with food allergies. This omission reflects a glaring oversight in customer care, underscoring a need for immediate improvement. The overall experience felt impersonal and underwhelming, falling short of the expectations set by the ambiance and price point.
The food was very good but the service is lacking.
The restaurant offers only 2 seatings-6:30p & 8:30p which results in servers scrambling to accommodate their customers. At our 8:30 seating, we didn't see our sever until after 8:50. Unless service improves will they hold on to their star?
I'm hesitant to write this review because nothing was bad,
I'm hesitant to write this review because nothing was bad, but I feel like some courses were a miss. The caviar kim was really good; I usually don't eat raw, but the textures were complex and the flavors went together well. The scallop was also good, but nothing too special. My favorite entree was the jook. It was creamy and flavorful. I never expected porridge to be in a Michelin star tasting menu, but I was pleasantly surprised. Then came the black cod which was average. The skin was crispy, but it completely fell off the rest of the fish when you tried to cut it. The fish was fresh, but not very flavored. The duck was the most disappointing. My piece had a large amount of fat compared to my bf's piece. They say its dry aged, but you couldn't really taste that. The chans were confusing because they seemed random and didn't pair too well with the duck. Dessert #1 was good, the cinnamon leaf on top was very pretty. I loved dessert #2, which was a sweet potato mochi donut. I wish they sold this by itself because I would get another. Ordered 2 drinks too, no complaints. Espresso martini cocktail (not sure what it was called) was smooth and creamy. Overall, I'm glad that I was able to try Jua and I do think it was a pleasant dining experience although not my favorite.
One of, if not the, favorite tasting menus in the city.
Some tasting menus have some misses but it felt like everything here was a hit. It's been a while since I've been so I can't recall the exact dishes we had, but it's been about 2 years and all I can remember is that I have to go back, and so I just need need to do just that and update this.
if you're Korean, Jua has a very up scaled homey menu
if you're Korean, Jua has a very up scaled homey menu inspired by a lot of classic korean dishes. I enjoyed every dish but my favorite was definitely the jook and the caviar kimchi. the wine pairing selection is a bit steep for serving pretty cheap wine, though.
My boyfriend took me to Jua for our anniversary and, aside
My boyfriend took me to Jua for our anniversary and, aside from the menu being incredible from top to bottom, the waitstaff was so attentive to my nut allergy. When introducing each dish, they made sure to let me know what they left out of mine: pine nuts in the Jook and almonds in the Goguma Juak. Great overall experience!
Jua is a seven course meal with optional add ons.
The first dish was their famous caviar kim - a bite of tuna, avocado and crispy rice with caviar on top, a wide variety of textures. The second dish was a scallop dish, in a bed of cream sauce and rad dishes on top. The dish was light and creamy. The third dish was called jook, a porridge of various textures. This was one of my favorites and a decently sized portion. The fourth dish was the cod, a small portion of cod atop a radish in a red sweet sauce. The radish was a bit bitter for my liking but overall the dish was still good. The fifth dish was the duck and chan. It featured a small chunk of duck and a plate of little side dishes, from fried lotuses to a jelly sandwich. The details were very intricate. The next two dishes were desserts: The sixth dish was sujeonggwa, an apricot dish in a sweet soup with a delicate leaf pattern on top. The last dish was a sweet potato sticky rice donut paired with a vanilla ice cream. All the dishes were like art, featuring so many different details and textures. I highly recommend. The waiters were also super sweet. The only thing is I would definitely try to come to this reservation on time. We arrived 10 minutes after and got the table closest to the door, but it would have been nice to be seated more inside to better feel the ambiance.
Biggest downs for me from the night were 1.
Having Juk (the porridge) in the middle of the meal as a carb heavy and large portion really killed the progression. I felt like I was enjoying the meal at a reasonable pace, and eating the Juk really slowed me down and made me fuller than I wanted for the rest. The Juk itself was pretty savory and tasty, but I think at the end of the meal would have been more appropriate. 2. The wine pairing is relatively affordable at $95, but the quality of the wines was not very high (I would guess $15-20 retail for most of the bottles), and although the waiters memorize an intro to each wine, they didn't really know more about the wine. Just some basics like the region, maybe some more about the wine making or region. Obviously not to every table, that would be tiring; but I felt that they should've had that information if known. Caviar kim is good, probably the strongest dish out of the set. But to be honest I felt that there was still not enough caviar...perhaps I am too greedy. Scallop felt pretty lazy to me, lots of sauce and a salad of small raw scallop cubes, korean pear and radish slices. The fish was cooked very well and soft, but the gochujang sauce was too salty and honestly ruined the delicacy of the fish. Something with more acidity like citrus and a light butter glaze would've been better for me. Banchans looked cool, but I only liked the gochujang fried potato thing, the meatball, and the beet that you can wrap the duck in (that is a good combo). Palate cleanser was forgettable, but the donut was chewy and very tasty. The ice cream at the end was nice. Sorry to go about the wine, but I was also pretty disappointed about the by the glass selection. I went to celebrate a birthday and there was no champagne btg...only Cremant de Loire...didn't see much quality on the by the glass (yes I know it's meant to be affordable, but the wine list itself has some good choices).
This place was phenomenal.
Every dish was so unique with a lot of flavor. I genuinely enjoyed everything. One thing that especially blew me away is the sweet potato dessert. Highly recommend.
Jua was one of the most enjoyable prix fixe experiences
Jua was one of the most enjoyable prix fixe experiences I've had so far! Each dish was thoughtfully curated for both taste and presentation, with the transition between courses being well balanced. We had both the Uni Kim and the Abalone add ons with two cocktails on top of the 7 course meal. The meal was filling but not overwhelming, with my favorites being the starter kims and the desserts. For those who are not selecting the wine pairing, I would definitely recommend getting a cocktail as a refreshing palette cleanser for between courses. The service was great and there were multiple servers checking up on us throughout the night without being too overbearing. The ambiance was lovely for parties of 2 with a couple of tables available for larger parties. Of the few Michelin starred restaurants that I've dined at, this has been one of my favorites in terms of both food and overall experience!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!
Worked flawlessly!
Worked so well! I was a bit nervous, but everything went very smoothly. purchased the reservation, and got into the restaurant seamlessly.
Love this app!
So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res
instead of waiting weeks I got my 4 charles reservation instantly
Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
