Chef Isao Yamada crafts out this beautiful Kaiseki tasting
Chef Isao Yamada crafts out this beautiful Kaiseki tasting course at 12 seat counter with the tall high ceiling. Had one of the best Uni Chawanmushi in the city. Chef topped it with the fresh truffles which intensified umami in the dish. Wagyu caviar was amazing except the form that was little too overpowering. Needless to say, the crab donabe was extensively impressive. We can have as many bowls as you like. For my birthday dessert, they served ice cream made out of their homemade 9 year aged soy sauce. Nope it's not salty instead buttery and creamy both semi sweet and savory flavors were well balanced.

Kaiseki Room has a hefty price tag and huge potential which is unfortunately unmet thanks to several mediocre courses and inexperienced staff. The location itself is stunning. It is located in the literal middle of a Manhattan block across from the timeless La Grande Boucherie. Inside is small but bright and organic thanks to the bright lightning and the soft curves of the wooden panels. The waitstaff were a bit awkward and not so personable which is odd for such an expensive location. I remember one gentleman eating next to us ordered a very expensive pour of whiskey and saw that the bottle ran out as his shot was being poured. From their body language the waiter clearly noticed the shot was short but proceeded to serve it anyway. The kaiseki itself had promise but so many of the dishes were odd in flavor and texture. It opened with an incredible serving of toro, uni, wagyu, and caviar that was the highlight of the menu and really the only dish we loved until the Donabe Rice arrived too little too late to save the day. The chefs did not appear so experienced, at least with this specific menu. Given the price tag there is no reason I can think of to visit this restaurant over one of the many excellent omakase options in NYC.

If you like bones in your eel, bones in your tempura, thick textured sashimi, liver, then maybe this place is for you. The guest next to me seemed to enjoy the food while me and my friend kept giving each other the quiet eye, disappointed by each dish. The ingredients weren't bad and I could taste the quality. I personally didn't find the food enjoyable, the flavors were odd. Even the miso soup, which I normally always gulp up, was oddly flavored with a strong wine taste. At some point I started feeling nauseus. I would not recommend this meal. The only thing I enjoyed was surprisingly the dessert; the yuzu tofu icecream was really good and had a beautiful blend of honey, yuzu pudding and fresh strawberry. The chocolate cake was also not bad. The waitresses were very nice and attentive.
Be the first to ReplyI enjoyed all the dishes.
Everything was delicious, especially the waygu steak. The service is also excellent. The price is reasonable for a Kaiseki dinner.
Be the first to ReplyWe celebrated our anniversary there and it was the best
We celebrated our anniversary there and it was the best decision made. Although the restaurant itself was tiny, attached to a grand hallway with see through windows which made the experience less intimate, everything else, the quality and presentation of food, the service, the ambience, was just perfect. Don't underestimate the amount of food - I was SO FULL towards the last course that I almost wished I had more room for such delicious food. We were also offered an extra chocolate mousse with candle for our anniversary. Servers were super attentive and knowledgeable about the dishes. They did a great job explaining every course to us. Chef Yamada was interactive and friendly, showing us a few ingredients and it was just a pleasure to watch him make every course of the meal.

- came for thanksgiving with the wife (to avoid both our families)- for the two of us, the bill came out to well over $1000 (beverage pairing *by request* was $189 pp)- one of the top 5 best meals of my life (but it should be for that price)- personable/knowledgable staff- one of the very few times I wasn't disappointed by a beverage pairing (if you can swing it, would recommend)- highlights for me were the first course (silky tofu) and the wagyu course- was disappointed by the sashimi course, found a few pieces chewy/fishy- the rice course was seemingly endless, we each had 3 servings (or however many you can eat), really enjoyed the flavors but found the citrus peel a bit overwhelming - left very full and satiated but not uncomfortable

It was somewhat hard to find the place because it's next to another restaurant. Although ambiance of the restaurant was a little small, food and service of the place was memorable. Presentation of each dish was unique and quality did not disappoint. Would love to come back some time :)

So. Can I just say. Oh. My. God. No. Really. OMGOMGOMGI had my first Kaiseki experience last night at Kaiseki Room by Yamada on W 53rd. It's a little tricky to find because you have to walk through Le Grand Boucherie which is, honestly, "grand" in every sense of the word: basically a huge, indoor arcade (European style). Kaiseki Room by Yamada is tucked into a small spot on the non-Boucherie side of the arcade. Inside the room (600 sq ft, 12 seats at the counter a few tables) the design is pretty spectacular. SOARING high ceiling and the entire room sort of bends and curves around and up. Hard to explain. Amazing to experience. Look, all I can say is that this was The Best Meal of My Life. And I have eaten some meals y'all. I am giving 5 stars here, but Kaiseki Room by Yamada should have it's own scale. As in I think a more "accurate" award would be 10 out of 5. There are not enough stars in the current system for me to give a real rating here.Every. Single. Thing. About the dining experience here is perfection. The service is what French Haute Cuisine restaurants should aspire to: staff that is fully conversant in every aspect of the meal (10 highly intricate and complex courses presented in the most beautiful dishes and bowls and plates you can imagine), attentive to the point of removing even the tiniest drop of anything that winds up on your lacquer tray, yet complete unobtrusive. They are there constantly, available the moment you need them. But there is never the feeling of "hovering."I of course sat at The Counter. Do you even know me?? But also you must sit at The Counter to get the Full Experience. And somehow I got sat DIRECTLY in front of Chef Yamada. Like, JACKPOT!! You could not get a better seat. Total craziness. And? Chef Yamada is extremely nice. Friendly, smiley, great, positive energy/vibes. Which seriously enhances the experience.EVERYTHING is prepared right in front of you. And there is a lot. I do not eat beef, pork or poultry and I kind of panicked because, odd for me, I somehow forgot to let them know I had restrictions. But Chef Yamada seamlessly adjusted my menu. On the Oregon Matsutake Mushroom and Steamed Abalone course everyone else got Guinea Hen Broth and a large slice of Prosciutto over top. Chef Yamada made mine with fish broth and that broth was The Most Delicious, most complex, most depth of flavor broth I have ever had. And it was his "substitute" broth...I am including a pic of last night's menu. The menu descriptions provide you only with a very bare bones sort of "framework" for what is included in each course. It's more of a "guide" than an actual menu. Each course is so incredibly complex in flavor, taste, texture and presentation. The Hassun course (sushi & seasonal seafood Kobachi) is the most beautiful food presentation I ever been served. The course consisted of different courses within the course, plus a gooseberry palate cleanser. Each "mini course" was presented in its own, beautiful glass bowl/container and everything was arranged on a glass serving platter with twisted handle and then decorated with autumnal foliage/greenery. This is representative of everything served to you at Kaiseki by Yamada: a feast for ALL the senses. Everything you see. Everything you touch Everything you eat is PERFECTION. I eat Omakase a lot and I dine alone. I do not like to eat with anyone else when I am eating Omakase because I need to experience each bite. Kaiseki was different though. Each course is so complex and the entire dinner is so long (2.5 hrs, block out the time you need to be here and be present) that we all began talking to each other at the counter. As in group JOY and CELEBRATION at the incredible meal we were experiencing together. Even though we were strangers to each other. If you can you should experience this.If food, cuisine, dining is important to you, you should experience Kaiseki Room by Yamada.
Be the first to ReplyWe tried for our special event recently.
It is at excellent location from Columbus circle. The place is beautifully decorated. Chef Yamada is making food in front of us, which is nice, as many of the places the main chef does not cook for you except hanging theirs name on the restaurant. Services are excellent, attentive, not not intrusive. 8 course menu is placed in front of us. The food overall are and pretty and delicious. The sashimi dish is slightly lack of imagination, the sushi dish is the best with autumn leaf design. There are quite a bit fish eggs involved, it is a bit heavy sometimes. So one needs to come hungry. Final cost of the food is reasonable comparing many of the fancy sushi places in the city, giving correct inflation problem. Chef is involved with every dish and I can appreciate he takes a pride of his artistic skill. I will definitely go back again.

An experience you won't forget. First time visiting and we will definitely return.

Definitely a memorable and treasured fine dining/foodie experience! Reservation was a breeze and the staff called to confirm arrival time and allergies. Everything from the atmosphere and decor to the food and presentation exceeded our expectations. Even though we only elected the 8 courses menu while other patrons that night were on the 10 courses menu, the conscientious Chef Yamada served us an additional 2 courses on the house so that we didn't have to wait or feel awkward in between the courses. The selection of ingredients and mix of hot and cold dishes were thoughtful and all the courses were prepared with exceptional creativity and texture! We enjoyed every moment and found the wagyu beef, sushi hassun, donabe rice and soy sauce ice cream especially phenomenal and sensational to the taste buds. We also got pleasantly surprised with an extra dessert from the chef to celebrate my birthday and his generosity tonight warmed our hearts as well. Although we were initially a little nervous with the price and wondered what kind of experience we'd get, we left the venue fully satisfied and would definitely recommend it to others for special occasions and loved ones!
Be the first to ReplyA must have immersive experience in a world of new flavors.
We - a family party of free - opted for the table menu experience instead of the counter chef menu and we missed the opportunity to assist to the cooking and dish preparation: that only worthing the price difference. Ingredients and raw food are exceptionally fresh and well conserved. Restaurant environment is minimalist, inviting the guest to stay concentrated on the dinner ceremony experience. Service is accurate and personnel fully available providing courses' informations and explanations. Only one point to address: kitchen fumes extraction system to be improved, being ineffective while preparing the superlative Fukuoka Wagyu.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect dining experience.
I've done many Kaiseki menus and I will say, this one was the best! Food was delicious, but also filling, which isn't always the case with this type of menu. The Donabe rice course is the highlight. You can eat as many bowls as there is servings left! But I was already stuffed! I will be back when the chef changes his next seasonal menu. This will be a regular spot for me when in NYC! If you're wondering, do the chef counter and not the table. You miss some essential courses at the table.
