I can't believe I've come to this place so often and still
I can't believe I've come to this place so often and still have yet to rave about how much I love their ramen. There are usually no lines since the restaurant is in a little corner in a plaza on Convoy. The server who usually seats and takes our order is very welcoming, and the inside is small - kind of what you would find in a ramen shop in Japan. I love this place because it is inexpensive compared to other ramen shops, food is good, and I don't have to wait an hour to eat. You may see other reviews mentioning other ramen places, but I think it's fair to judge this place based on its own, especially considering how each ramen shop specializes in different types of ramen. Just my two cents, here's what I usually order: Karami signature ramen: I think its a chicken-based bone broth with a layer of chili oil on top, which adds a much needed spiciness to the broth. It comes with corn, half an ajitama, two thin slices of chashu pork, some marinated bamboo, and pickled red ginger (something that so many ramen places don't include). I love it. My partner and I get a serving of extra noodles and split it, and our total still comes out to less than $20 a bowl. The soup is so flavorful and so salty, just the way I like it in ramen. My favorite part of the dish are the marinated bamboo. It has a sweetness to it that goes well with the saltiness and slight spiciness of the ramen. The noodles are neither thin nor thick, but are cooked well enough to where there is a chew. Karaage chicken: I always get a side of fried chicken with my ramen because I feel like its such a classic dining experience, plus its a great way to gauge how they make their chicken. Karami lightly fries theirs. The batter is not too thick on the chicken, still leaving the inside juicy and moist, although I felt like the chicken during my recent trip was a bit dry. It was still crispy and delicious. It comes with a bed of sliced cabbage and spicy mayo, a perfect complement to their chicken. Overall, Karami is great place to grab a bite of ramen. It's not busy, open relatively late, and offers quick service with many options. It's a great place if you want to support local businesses.

Simple, uncomplicated menu with well prepared dishes- our family goes here at least 1x per month.

I had a lot of high hopes for this place I really did but I really did not like how close the bathroom was to our table. We were seated right next to it and I immediately smelt the funky smell when I sat down. When I actually went into the bathroom I noticed the door had a lot of gaps. I understand that space is limited but the least they could do is build the door that fully covers any gaps so any smells wouldn't seep into the restaurant. Honestly if I were to come again I would ask for a table the farthest away from it. It was really hard to enjoy my meal knowing there were people going in and out of it and everytime the door opened I would get a whiff of the inside. I was pretty disappointed and because of this I have to knock away 1 star. The food itself was not terrible but also not too memorable. I have worked in a ramen shop in convoy years ago and know that most of these restaurants get their ingredients from pretty much the same suppliers. Almost all restaurants use the same noodles, etc. The only thing I would say is unique about this place is the fact that they use chicken broth as the base not pork. So if you have any diet restrictions to eating pork this will perfect as long as you ask for no chasu toppings. To me it didn't really taste like chicken so they do a good job in that sense. It also didn't feel as heavy as a typical tonkotsu (pork) broth which was nice. Unfortunately, it hasn't made my list of favorite ramen shops but I wouldn't mind going back if a friend or so invites me. Also the price is pretty high so if I want to pay almost $20 for a bowl of ramen I rather go somewhere else.
Be the first to ReplyWe have been on a tour of ramen places in San Diego.
We had heard good things about Karami Ramen, but we just did not enjoy the food. Food: Karami Signature ($16.50): First off, none of the ramen have a pork base, only chicken broth base. There is a spicy section so our expectation for the Karami Signature was that it would not be spicy. Incorrect conclusion. The soup was drenched in a spicy oil (look at how red the broth is in my picture!) that kept burning the back of my throat and triggering cough. We admit to not being very tolerant of spice, so many of you may enjoy the heat of the broth. But we couldn't even finish drinking ours. Eggs were perfectly softboiled but super salty, so I couldn't even enjoy that. Also compared to many other places on my ramen tour, the dish was a bit small for the price. Chicken Karaage (+$8.80 to make it a combo): Very crunchy batter. But otherwise not particularly remarkable. There was free dried garlic as garnish, which was nice. I love garlic. Ambiance: Cute eatery, although it smelled like cleaning solution (we arrived at opening). Service was quick and attentive. Parking: Free lot parking

Since my family and I were visiting Convoy Street to pick up some bento boxes from Nijiya Market, we were looking for some places to eat nearby since we were very hungry. We stumbled upon this ramen place in the same plaza. Upon coming here on Christmas Eve, we noticed it was quite empty to begin with. The place itself was quite small, with couch and bar-like seating available. I ordered the Tori Paitan Shoyu Ramen. To my surprise, it tasted pretty decent -- my bowl was filled with ramen noodles, bamboo shoots, ramen egg, and green onions. The only thing that tasted off was the chicken chashu. Most ramen places use pork so I wasn't used to that and also the chicken itself was quite bland. The broth was on the saltier end still but overall the ramen chewiness is a good consistency. I did notice that this place won the SD food competition for their Karami Signature dish. I probably wouldn't come here again but if I wanted something quick, this is a decent place to go for ramen. Nothing too special about it.

Love their paitan broth, and don't sleep on the fried rice!

Would go everyday if I could stomach the amount of spice that hits you! Love this place

The reason for 5 star is for their exceptional customer service. Let me explain. I came with my girlfriend and her friends were running late. We decided to order ahead of time for our friends so the food would arrive around the same time they did. The server came back to ask us if they could start cooking because they didn't want our friends food to be cold. I have never had that question asked before. You can honestly tell they really care about their customers. They were so thoughtful in many other aspects too. They brought out small bowls, a sippable cup, and a high chair without us even asking because they saw the little one. The entire experience seemed very homey and comforting.I would highly recommend this place. Food is stellar and the customer service was above and beyond.

Came here on a Friday night and only had one party ahead of us. The place is located in a plaza that has Nijiya, and is quite lowkey. Loved the vibes, server was also friendly and attentive.5/5 for the takoyaki and gyoza. Takoyaki was crispy on the outside, packed a lot of flavor and the sauce was thick and concentrated, which made it really tasty. The gyoza was also great. Make sure to order the 6 pc dishes to get more bang out if your buck. 4/5 for the thai shoyu ramen. Karami serves more traditional type of ramen, the noodles are more similar to shin ramyun and the soup base is light but flavorful. It's definitely drinkable and is not as rich compared to Menya Ultra. Noodles had good texture, the egg was soft and perfectly cooked. There was only one piece of thin chashu. Would've given a 5/5 if they had a thicker slice of meat or could have added one more slice but am looking forward to come back to try their karaage.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is super underrated.
Some of the best ramen in San Diego. The spicy ramen isn't overwhelming but still has that nice kick to it. Went here on a Saturday night and there were two tables open. The waitress got to us the second we sat down and less than 10 minutes later we got out food. The Chatsu Don is tender and juicy and the ramen noodles have a beautiful texture with a soft and gentle bite to them. The broth is also amazing. There aren't any extreme toppings just the general bamboo shoots, green onions, cabbage, and egg but the simplicity of it is what makes it so good. Maybe not where I would take someone on a first date but if you want to impress someone with a good bowl of ramen, I would definitely recommend this place.

Watch out this place! The ramen you see in the menu and what description says, totally different from what you get. I used to come here a lot but I won't be back anymore. I ordered the signature ramen, the menu says two sliced of chashu, corn, and Ginger on top and Kikurage. I only got one slice of chashu. No corn, kikurage and ginger. You are paying $16.50 plus tips... and this is what you get. What a shame! I would buy ramen set at Nijiya and it could be way more worth! The waitress was nice but if they wanna go cheap due to the inflation, don't scam the customers!
Be the first to ReplyHidden gem of San Diego.
If you are looking for a little cozy comfort Japanese food, this is the place. The restaurant is not big but you have your own space. The decor is very much like a Ramen shop in Japan. The staff was very friendly. The food came out quickly. The menu is simple. The price was reasonable. The portion was enormous. I ordered a a curry bowl which cost $18. At first I though it was expensive, but when it came out, it was huge and definitely worth the money. The signature ramen was also good. We were there on Friday night and it was surprisingly not crowded. Strongly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyKarami lunch special really is special here.
Ramen and another dish is included so its worth the price.
Be the first to ReplyThe only place I know that serves a habanero ramen.
And if you're bold. Go for the step up to the shoyu ramen which I have yet to try! Very delicious and satisfying.
Be the first to ReplyKarami signature is amazing.

I am here visiting so not familiar with the various local ramen shops. Since my ramen taste buds are from Japan, I have to compare it with what I know. I saw that it has a 4+ rating on Yelp so I am assuming that the locals like the flavor but what was missing for me was the deep flavor (Koku) of the pork broth. I am assuming that in the states it will be hard to bring out that flavor due to the type of pork that is used here.
Be the first to ReplyI am a fan.
Ramen broth has good flavor and spice! They totally hook your bowl up with a ton of noodles and other toppings. I ordered the Karami special. It had a nice subtle kick in heat. It came with soft boiled egg and two pieces of pork chashu. My friend ordered the Habanero broth and the spice level was spot on! We also ordered a side of kaaragi chicken. Their chicken pieces are pretty big and it comes with a delicious siracha mayo dipping sauce.Parking is a bit tight, so try to come a little before noon or after.

Really delicious ramen and their combo options are nice because you get a discount off the a la carte price.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a hidden gem worth looking for.
In 2019, Karami Ramen won the People's ChoiceAward at the 2019 San Diego Ramen Festival. Then, COVID-19 hit and the Ramen Festival went on a 2 year hiatus. This year, the 2022 San Diego Ramen Festival will be held Nov 10th. Interestingly. Karami Ramen was able to hold onto the trophy all this time and will returned the trophy this year. I hope they win again!!! Because of their simple menu, this allows the ramen chefs to concentrate on providing authentic Japanese ramen which will transport you to old Japan. Everything is delicious here, but, my go to ramen is the Kuro Truffle: An aromatic flavor of black truffle mixed into the chicken broth served with 2 slices of pork chashu, egg, cabbage, bamboo shoots, naruto & green onion. Add extra bamboo shoots for more of a sweeter taste. AND have a large bottle of Sapporo...best way to round out your meal. It's so good!!! I hope you find Karami Ramen right away!!!
Be the first to ReplyA hidden gem.
Easy to miss if you don't know it's there but excellent food. Seating is limited but in a cosy and quirky way. Feels very intimate and personal. A must if you like good food.
