Great place to try kaiseki
Beautiful space with delicious food. Great place to try kaiseki. Staff were lovely and provided simple explanations in English.

We just got out of this restaurant and had such an amazing dinner cooked privately for us by Chef Yuchi! From the moment we arrived at the door of this traditional Japanese style restaurant in Kyoto, we were already given a very warm welcome by the staff and escorted to our very own private room. Chef Yuchi cooked in front of us and assisted by Hiroko-san who walked us through every dish which was absolutely delicious and fresh. The service, ambience, food and he entire experience are just very special up until we left. Highly recommended when in Japan! Arigatou to Chef Yuchi, Hiroko San and the rest of the team.

A very special kaiseki with every course meticulously crafted to bring out the best in the freshest ingredients.
Loved the grilled eel, sweet fish and egg plant.
Service was very attentive and the place is an oasis of calm to relax you.
Everything aspect is excellent.
Wakuden is a 2 michelin star kaiseki restaurant. As such we had high expectations.
The place is not easy to find, that said, most traditional japanese restaurants are not easy to find. Its all part of the journey to experience traditional Japanese food and service at its best. Wakuden is housed in an elegant understated old style Japanese house. It is simplistically adorned but yet tastefully put together. As in all good japanese restaurants, the emphasis is on the service, refinement and food - not to be distracted by obstentatous decor. We were not disappointed here.
We had a nice private room upstairs. Our private 'butler' was a very nice young lady who exudes grace and likewise was first class in her service. We started with the bamboo wine as pre dinner cocktails. As kaiseki goes, the food was the seasonal special with an extensive spread over 12 dishes. Every dish was well thought through. Beautifully presented. And tasted heavenly. Among some more interesting dishes we had fugu (puffer fish) sashimi, fugu shirako, kuma nabe (bear soup!) , an amazing local chargrilled beef ('tambak' gyu), totally unforgettable unagi imo (sweet potato grown on unagi fertilized soil) etc etc. The chef actually set up a grill with glowing charcoal to slowly grill some of our food. The food thus prepared was infused with a nice fragrance of the grill.
We like the place, the service and every dish served. The only slight drawback was, they did not have a menu translated to english. But it was manageable given we were quite familar with japanese food and our lady butler could converse some basic english.
What more is there to say but confirm it meet our expectations with aplomb.
Superb Kyoto cuisine. Meticulous services
The maitre d'hotel welcomed us at the front porch on our arrival. Three maids in traditional kimonos ushered us to a secluded room on the far corner, with dark dimmed lights. Started with sake in a raw cut-out bamboo, Hamo eel boil and trout sashimi on green leaves, and grilled aubergine, followed by unagi eel grilled. Highlights of the dinner was fresh ayu (sweetish) caught in Kyoto river. A young chef came and grilled the ayu on a charcoal stove in front of us. Later the same chef served special bowls of rice with ayu meats. Desert was a sweet tender mochi in big green maple leaves. This was one of the best Kyoto cuisines I have ever had.

The start of the meal was very promising with a delicious lobster sashimi followed by fresh and sweet pieces of sashimi. The food overall was amazing and perfectly executed and there were a lot of dishes were the flavours suprised me . BUT, when we came to the uni udon course we noticed that the uni portion we got was much less than the portion that the other two japanese guests next to us got. So we asked the staff and they amde up some excuses saying they got a different tasting menu but we were only told about ONE menu when we first booked this place. Later on, they said if we want to add extra uni, they could add more for if we paid USD40! Thats totally not acceptable for a 2 michelin star restaurant that charges you almost USD400 per person. The chef should serve you the optimum amount of each ingredient that highlights the taste of each dish and not based on customer
Apart from this issue, we were satisfied with the food at Kodaiji Wakuden.
