La Esquina New York Reviews from The Last Year
5 stars just because of Ozzy's service.
Food reliable but we come for Ozzy. The drinks are strong and good

I hate to write this negative review, because I enjoy this place but the bouncer that is here at night is clearly racist. Two times I've come here with a larger Latino population and he's told me "you need reservations." However, he's let other people without reservations in right in front of me and my friends. This man is rude and clearly gets some sort of power trip from deciding who can get in and who can't. The funny part is I've been here multiple times and gotten in with no issue with another bouncer at the front door. This bouncer thinks he's some hot shot. Lol you give la esquina a bed rep with that type of attitude, especially when I've been here before with different types of people and it's the same vibe downstairs.
The tortas were tasty and the ingredients tasted fresh.
The side salad was a nice healthy addition to the meal. Service was quick and friendly. We lucked out and were able to sit at the counter outdoors. I'd come back.
Trying so hard to be a scene but a let down on all fronts.
The food is bad, the music is way too loud, the service is non existent, the couches are all torn and battered, and the bathroom is disgusting. Avoid.
An overhyped place stuck in the 20th century.
No need to keep a tight guest list on a clipboard or keep doors locked. To their credit, tacos were on point. Service was haphazard with drinks coming towards end of meal. However, it seemed they were short staffed.

One of NYCs many restaurants that relies solely on scene and exclusivity to survive. You are enticed by the security check-in and entrance through the kitchen only to realize that you really are entering a cantina: dirty basement dwelling, deafening music, and tables on top of one another. The service is non-existent. Cool decorations, I guess. Classic margarita tasted like battery acid. Can't comment on the food because we left after the first round of drinks.

The service was ok, and the drinks were good; however, caution is advised for large groups considering dining here. Being a party of 10, we opted for the family-style dinner and found ourselves leaving somewhat hungry due to the small portions. Although the food was delicious, the cramped space initially posed an issue, but additional tables were added upon request. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for large groups. I'll consider revisiting to try items from their regular menu instead.
This is the kind of restaurant that makes me love being in
This is the kind of restaurant that makes me love being in New York City. Its speakeasy vibe, the service, and the exquisite food are a big YES for me. A personal favorite were the platanos, but literally everything was fantastic. They were able to easily accommodate my vegan friend which is ofc a plus :)

We went here for a girls dinner on a Friday night as a group of 4. The vibe of the restaurant is very lively - half bar/half sit down restaurant with a DJ & very good music. Not a place to go if your looking for a quiet night w/ deep conversation, but could be a good spot to start your night if you're planning to bar/club hop. The food was really good - we started with guac, queso, and elote & everything was very good and flavorful. I had the pescado tacos which were excellent but very small (2 small tacos) - perfect for a lighter bite after heavier apps, but if you're really hungry you may need to order more. The drinks were ok - we had the blood orange margarita, la piña fuerte, and the pepino Diablo. The blood orange & pineapple were ok but the flavors were a bit too strong, but the others in my group loved the pepino Diablo & ordered multiple rounds. The reason for the 2 star review is the service. We got to the restaurant for a 9 pm reservation and were not seated until almost 1030pm. We were forced to wait in the crowded, club-like bar section with no seats & there was little communication from the host. They told us multiple times we were the next to be seated, only to have other tables be seated before us. Overall, the food was good but doesn't warrant a 1.5 hour wait imo.
Immaculate Vibes
Super cool vibe that is definitely unsuspecting based on the exterior--you'll know what I mean if you go there. Probably one of my newest favorite places to recommend to people visiting the city. Their food was incredible, incredible tequila selection, great vibes, friendly staff, all of which contribute to a memorable experience. Will surely be going back with friends, loved ones, business dinners--you name it!
Lively place with great music.
It's a place where you can enjoy great food, drinks, and good times with friends.
A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!
We we’re SO disappointed about literally EVERYTHING with this restaurant! 1. The food did not taste anything and the beef was chewy, my friend couldn’t even finish her tacos. 2. The service was really bad. We had to wait for our table, wait 30 min to even order drinks and when we finally got to order food, the waiter did not copy our order which led to us receiving something completely different than we thought we ordered. 3. The staff had a really bad attitude! They were RUDE, talked about us and laughed. I would NOT recommend to visit!
Lunch in New York
After a morning walk, we came across this restaurant. Seeing it from the outside you start to think 'where have I ended up'..... then when you enter there is a nice atmosphere and the food is really good in this restaurant. Very friendly staff and they also have live music in the evening. I advise
Best ever!! Corn is great, coming from S.
Texas the mini tacos are authentic as they come.

Had the Bisteck and Chicken tacos which were very juicy and flavourful. I just think it's too pricey for 2 tacos, and will add up if you wanna eat a lot. Service was lacking big time. Took 40 minutes to take our order, forgot and didn't punch in our order, didn't offer anything to make up for it. I am not from NY and just ruined the first day of my trip. Restaurant was very busy but it's small and seemed like they were concerned about their downstairs bar patrons instead of the dine in. Food was good and the vibes were nice tho.
A Seriously Cool Place To Eat.
On a Soho corner sits a crowded taco shop called La Esquina, a multifaceted Mexican spot that is housed in a restored 1950's diner. Tacos with filings like sliced rib-eye, grilled mahi mahi, seared cauliflower amongst others are slung all day from the compact corner taqueria. In the downstairs brasserie there is an expanded menu....... ....Queso fundido, various ceviches and more. I zeroed in on the Sopa De Tortilla with Avocado & Chili and Steak Pepito Torta with black Beans, Jalapenos & Chimichurri. This is an underground hot spot, a bit grungy, dark, crowded and feels like you might be eating in a basement..........but people love it. It's one of NYC best spots for food and drink. A seriously cool place to eat.
Excellent food service ambience quite an experience.
Very cool and Soho. Always find time to go back for a great margarita.
Avoid at all cost, save your money and watch out you don't get robbed.
This place sucks now, it's gone wayyyy downhill. My expensive leather jacket was stolen. I emailed twice over 10 days, no reply. It's just a money grab for tourist now.
This place had taken a hard nosedive.
Had my leather jacket stolen there a few weeks ago. I've emailed them twice and left 2 voicemails to see if anyone turned it in. No reply. This place used to be high end, no longer. Avoid. There are much better places, it's essentially a tourist trap and overrated bar now.
Last Thursday I had lunch here.
Carnita Tacos and Elotes Callejeros. The tacos were fine but the elotes (grilled corn) was not as the corn cob had frizzled corn which was not succulent. I was sitting or trying to sit on a rickety stool which was making me nervous in case I fell. Years ago when I worked in this neighborhood I used to come to La Esquina with colleagues and we all liked the place a lot both at the counter and at the restaurant. Fast forward the prices have shot up but the quality has not. The guy who took the order explained the increase - blame it on Covid which pretty much has ruined a lot of things and lives. I doubt if I will ever return here.
I've been to la esquina quite a lot especially when I used
I've been to la esquina quite a lot especially when I used to go out more socially and a few years ago it wasn't a pain in the ass to get a reservation here nor was it ever so crowded!! I went last night around 6pm and not only was it packed in the "speakeasy" but it was impossible to move around without a line forming at every which way. It's great to see its reaching the masses but the quality has definitely gone down over the years. The drinks are fine as those are made ready to order- and the ceviche is still top notch, but the appetizers and mains have gone down in portion size and the tres leches cake I ordered was simply just straight out bad!!! It smelled and tasted like it had been shoved in the depths of a freezer since the pandemic. I was severely disappointed by how poor the quality of the food has become here but if you're looking for a place to have a drink with an intimate candle light setting while they're blasting deep house, then this is the right place for you. They do offer reservations for large parties but a party generally requires pre fixie. Definitely a cool spot to check out but nothing too crazy in terms of food - can for sure find more authentic Mexican for a fraction of the cost elsewhere
This place is the best.
Haven't tried the food but the speakeasy here is my favorite in the entire city. Very fun vibes and great drinks
When I'm in NY and in the soho area I will definitely stop
When I'm in NY and in the soho area I will definitely stop in for a few Tacos. I just walk up to the window and order a few to go. The service has always been fast and good. The carnitas and bistec tacos are real good. It's been some time since I ate inside the restaurant and it was real good and the service was good.
Great food, great drinks, great service.
Came here with a few coworkers for some late night bites and was not disappointed. The restaurant is considered a speakeasy, so make sure you make reservations prior. Tacos are authentic and they pair very well with the beers they have on tap. The ambience is awesome with a vampire/prohibition vibe. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely come back.
Delicious food
Super cozy "cave" hidden under a diner. Really good service, food and atmosphere. Delicious Mexican food that we can highly recommend. Remember to book a table well in advance.
Had high hopes
Booked a table for 4 people. We were crammed onto the smallest table and were told that’s just how it is when we asked for some more space. You are basically sitting with the table next to you. The restaurant smelled a bit bad, like dampness and there were buckets hanging every few inches all along the ceiling. It did not feel sanitary, so unfortunately we chose to leave.
we weren't welcome
We arrived at 11'55 for lunch. The door was open and staff was there. But nevertheless the waiter made us wait on the rather chilly and windy street because it opened at noon. What a warm welcome! 5 minutes later the waiter made us sit on a table next to the door. It was as cold and windy as on the street because the backdoor too was open and there was a terrible draught of air. When we asked if it was possible to close the door he told us that he wanted the door open. We told him that in this case we would have to leave, he didn't care and answered "ok, leave!". What we did immediately because rarely we have encountered such an attitude.
Delicious
Surprisingly underground, you walk around the restaurant and suddenly find yourself at “metro level”. Dark but attractively decorated. everything tasty. Excellent service and nice atmosphere. Try the margarita cocktail.
