La Marmotte Telluride Reviews from The Last Year
What a disappointing experience.
We made reservations 10 weeks in advance for one of the private globes, but were told upon arrival that the globes weren't available and had been "booked for weeks". It was very dismissive. No apology or anything. After starting off with this sour note, we were continually treated as if we didn't belong. The staff is very pretentious and acts as if you're lucky to be dining there. If you're not well versed in French wine, don't dare ask a question because you'll receive an eye roll. To cap off the evening, we were overcharged on the bill by $100 when we tried to split it three ways. This was corrected after we addressed it, but the explanation was suspicious. The only reason this isn't a 1 star review is because the food is decently tasty. Not nearly worth the price, but good nonetheless. Avoid this place if you value decent service or appropriately priced food.
Food was very good as was the wine by glass selection.
Server was little overly chatty but nice and did offer good service. From the prix fixe, we started with an onion soup and market salad. Both were very nicely prepared and delicious. Onion soup is easy to make too salty, this wasn't and had very clean distinct flavors. For my main, I had the riz et champignons which is a mushroom risotto of sorts, excellent flavor and not heavy as a risotto can be. My wife had the trout which she enjoyed very much. We topped off desserts with chocolate and cherry clafoutis + the apple crumble. Nothing was left when we finished, super good. The black mark on the restaurant is a insulting 4% check add on for "employee health & housing". This added $10+/- to the check on a $95/pp prix fixe. This is not a cheap dinner. Don't insult your guests. Make the prix fixe $100 and be done with it. Adding 4% and asking for another 20-25% tip is obnoxious and why I won't return. Charge what you want to charge UP FRONT, don't nickel and dime us.
A friend wanted to eat in one of the glass igloos.
She also reviewed the online menu, which sealed the deal with duck and Foie gras being posted. We rearranged our schedules to meet the restaurant's availability. This place has also gone prix fixe with a few items having an upcharge. The igloo was a cool experience. The dining menu does not match the online menu. Our server seemed a bit put out when we mentioned that the reason we came was because of the online menu. It wasn't the servers fault and we didn't grumble much about the issue, just stated that if the menu changes frequently the website person should make the updates. The rest of the service was great!!! Food was fine. I don't know there is a new chef, new management or what, but the restaurant and food are not the same as my last visit. In all fairness that was pre-Covid, but that trip ranked a 5 star service. Drink prices are crazy. I ordered a cognac French 75 and it is $30! That price is posted on the menu, but as it was a special occasion I splurged. It was good, but not $30 worth.
Go to Brown Dig Pizza instead!
We believed this would be real Italian pizza. After all you couldn’t understand a thing on the menu. We were served a frozen like type pizza that tasted like paper and a salad that consisted of 4 tomato slices and a few blocks of feta - the salad was $17 or so and pizza $20 something as average for Telluride but I expected more out of this. The only thing good was the real yes real olive oil that I used half a bottle of whole there for some taste. It should have been a hint when I noticed no Italian people working here and they were mostly Spanish. I asked if they served calzones and the lady said she did not know what this was and she was new. She left to ask and never returned to our table. It was a shame the restaurant had real potential. I mean people such as Tom Cruise, and Opera live on the mountain. Where is the good stuff - ha ha!! Brown Dog pizza in town. That’s my recommendation!
Overpriced and overrated
This is a “French” restaurant with a $95 prix fixe dinner. Here are some things that did not live up to expectations: two of the five entree choices had up charges, which is just tacky-a price fixe menu should be exactly that. They should design the menu for the price they set. There are a handful of pseudo luxury add ons. The breadbasket came with two half slices of stale bread. They looked kind of lonely in the basket. Salad and onion soup appetizers were fine, just average. Entrees were poor. Boeuf stew was skimpy. The trout was bathed in grease. Desserts were fine. The food is American not French, overpriced and not particularly well executed. Service was average.
I took 10 of my friends to this restaurant on January 2.
I have been to this restaurant before. I have been a resident of Telluride for 26 years. We ordered oysters as an appetizer and only four people ate the oysters. Out of the four people who ate the oysters - we all got oyster poisoning. Two of us ended up in the emergency room, and the other two of us were sick for two days straight not being able to keep anything down. When I went to go talk to the manager about it, he told me that he would research into it and that was it. He would not help me further and told me to leave the restaurant - he walked me to the door. We spent over $2000 at night that dinner And this was the hospitality we received back from management. On top of all of this, I left a bag that was given to me as a birthday gift worth $300 and I called the same night to make sure they kept the bag. But since I was in the emergency room, I was unable to get it the next day. Someone took it After the fact I called management to save the bag for me. I would not recommend going to this restaurant, especially with their seafood and level of service. If you want overprice trash French food and If you want to vomit and purge you should go. On top of everything, I also brought in my doctors note describing that I had oyster poisoning and management seemed not to care, but rather tell me that they sell over 400 oysters a day. And told me to my face pretty much that it was none of their issues.
Fabulous ambience, waitstaff and food.
Mark, Toby, and Maggie are phenomenal assets to this establishment. Could not have been more happier with my experience there! We loved the wine, rib eye risotto, very special chocolate crêpe dessert. Toby, the bar tender was so accommodating along with Mark the maître d'. Maggie, the executive chef, was so nice to spend so much time with us and share how there is so much local to prepare over the top meals. Please be sure to have a reservation.
Note this very nice, classy, romantic restaurant is clearly
Note this very nice, classy, romantic restaurant is clearly popular and you def need reservations for dinner. BUT... we were lucky enough to walk in at sunset (8ish) to have our last hoorahh drink before heading home. We were welcomed with open arms and seated within minutes despite a sold out restaurant. Our waitress was gracious and kind. We quickly went from just drinks to dessert too once we saw the strawberry tarte on the menu- so good! Can't wait to come back to Telluride and have this place on our dinner reservations plan!
We went to Marmotte tonight for the first time.
The food and service was very good. I have to say though that an incident that left a bad taste in my mouth. I left a yeti cup by my table. I went back in person an hour later and it was gone apparently, I guess a staff person pilfered it as it was near closing time and no one else was seated near us. Only 30 bucks but really sucks.
Stellar dining experience at this charming classic French
Stellar dining experience at this charming classic French restaurant in downtown Telluride. We sat outside where the weather was perfect and service was attentive. Our group started with the Charcuterie plate. I'm just now looking at the menu and apparently we ate chicken liver mousse. In all honesty, I probably wouldn't have chosen this bc of my preconceived idea of eating liver but is was flavorful and had a nice texture. The flavor was elevated by the mustard and radish. We also shared the marinated olives. I tried the heirloom tomatoes which were served with eggplant purée. So fresh and seasoned well. We shared the melt in your mouth wagyu steak. I couldn't add a picture because we devoured it! Lastly we had the vanilla bean crème brûlée. A perfect ending for a perfect meal.
La Marmotte is absolutely the finest in Telluride.
From the oysters mignonette to dessert, everything was top-notch. The melon gazpacho was so refreshing , the risotto with fresh peas and mushrooms delicious... everything was outstanding, full of complex but subtle flavors. And the desserts!...save room, because they are original and artfully presented. Service is attentive and perfectly timed; the atmosphere is delightful...Don't miss this restaurant!
