Flawless food and ambience
Had a flawless and thoroughly enjoyable experience, from the ambience to the service to the food. Food is upscale Korean, I must say I'm okay with Korean food but not the hugest fan, but even if you're like me, you'll probably enjoy the quality and subtle tastes using authentic Korean ingredients - abalone, korean beef, Korean tilefish, short ribs, and a bit of the inevitable kimchi (but wisely not a lot, and not very strong or overpowering the other flavours). Even though it was a lunch degustation menu, and the portions were not large, by the end of the meal we were completely full. Wine list looked very good although not the biggest (there were only 2 of us and my wife doesn't drink much, so I only had 1 glass, and there wasn't a lot of choice by the glass). I chose lunch because the restaurant is on the 23 floor and I wanted the view - ask for a window table with a view, and you can see parts of Namson park and the city laid out below you. The view and decor made you feel like you were in an exclusive and genteel club. Service was excellent, always attentive without being annoying. The only little hitch was that although they know all the dishes, when they explain them in English, the Korean accent sometimes makes it hard to understand some of the ingredients. But all in all one of the best dining experiences I've had - I think they now have 2 Michelin stars (used to be 3 I believe), for the price it's definitely an experience worth having.

An exquisite korean meal at the top of Shilla hotel. Small restaurant with only 7 tables There is only 1 set menu. Every dish is very good to excellent. The flavours are also mild, nothing too salty or sweet. Standouts include the prawn, tilefish and beef courses Very good service as well
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing fifth visit loosing its fantastic taste
Had dinner there after a few years and it should be my fifth visit. Think they may have changed their chef . The restaurant has degraded itself with strange fusion. Non Korean nor decent fusion. Too much sugar in mist of the fishes. Disappointed and wonโt go again .

Be the first to ReplyThree invented stars
It is โvox populiโ here in Seoul that the three stars of this restaurant were โnegotiatedโ. By now there is no doubt in my mind. Now if you can make things right, why make things so ridiculously absurd and embarrassing? The food was OK. I cannot say that it was a disaster. It was not. But weโve had far too many fine dinings to even consider giving this restaurant one Michelin star.

Some might find the food here a bit bland but for me it wasn't at all. It was just right and not over powering. After eating here I felt very good the next day and was even energized. That's what good food made from great ingredients do to your body, I guess. The portion was big for me though because I ate all the side dishes and marinated vegetables that come along with the main dish. I asked for the hot pepper kimchi too (free of charge) so I was very full in the end. The tray for a rice bowl with side dishes seems to be too heavy for very thin female staff to carry though. It seems a bit inhumane for such thin ladies to carry heavy trays multiple times. I felt bad for them. At least they don't have to serve a lot of people since the restaurant has only a few tables. Other than that it was an excellent dinner. When I take Korean friends to an excellent Italian restaurant in Seoul they often complain about how salty it is. When the Italian chef was replaced by a Korean chef the food got bland for me but it was good for my friend. So it is very hard to satisfy everyone. I place little value on the Michelin guide so their ratings don't mean anything. But La Yeon should be put above many great restaurants in Seoul, in terms of ingredients and quality of food. I think they could do this because they only serve a certain number of people per day.
Be the first to ReplyGood or bad depends on who you are :)
After reading a mix of good and bad reviews, I was curious to check it out myself since I am a qualified chef. I understand now. Those who are after taste on the mouth will give a bad review whereas those who eat to satisfy the soul and mind will give a good one! Go figure it out :)
Be the first to Reply3 stars? Service is the star not the food
I wish I could understand what the MICHELIN inspectors saw in this restaurant. On the top floor of the hotel Shilla is Le Yeon. The room is minimal and conjures tradition. We had the feast and paid an additional 45,000 for beef. The menus did not match one of the courses. The staff was great the meal was well paced, the plating nice, but the dishes were hit and miss and some very bland. Perhaps a change in the kitchen or perhaps my palette is not as sophisticated as the inspectors, but Iโve never felt so let down by a Michelin restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyA real disappointment, don't know how it got 3 Michelin stars.
We came from a long flight to Seoul and didn't eat anything throughout our travel because our first plan in Seoul was to visit La Yeon, we got greeted by the very friendly staff of the restaurant and had a nice table, we got started with some really nice sweet potato chips and dried dates, however as the meal progressed we were left very disappointed, the food was average and best and if this was just a normal Korean restaurant in the hotel then we wouldn't have minded, however this is (and i really don't know how) a 3 Michelin star restaurant charging 3 Michelin stars prices, the next day we had an incredible meal at a 2 Michelin star restaurant in Seoul that made up for this experience, but i would definitely say avoid eating here.
Be the first to ReplyWorst 3 Michelin stars restaurant in my life
I have been in Michelin restaurants in 8 countries, it is undeniable to note that the level of rating of the red book in asia is much lower than anywhere else in the world. View and service is great but you can seriously find the exact same food in any food stall in a local street food market in Seoul.
Be the first to ReplyDecidedly "Not" a 3-Star Michelin Establishment!?!
Dined at La Yeon based on numerous notable magazine recommendations coupled with their three-star Michelin rating: Preferably I would like to believe that I am simply not a "connossieur" of Korean fine dining, but unfortunately I undoubtedly am of the opinion that this establishment is simply not worthy of their Michelin rating and cannot for the life of me comprehend it.
The tasting menu starts at US$200 per person with plenty of additional charges along the way, as well as expressively overpriced alcohol pairings that are not paired appropriately or accordingly. In mentioning the cost, my usual fine dining Michelin experience elicits flavours and tastes in each and every dish to be savoured long after the occasion is over often with dreams of a return engagement. In this case, some of the dishes were truly very good and creative both in preparation and presentation, but nothing bridging on either the extraordinary or exceptional.
With this said, the service was excellent, accommodating and conscientious, but also not outstanding and accompanied by dated furnishings and ambiance relying solely on the remarkable views.
In summation, a disappointing culinary outing.
